zendragon Posted March 6 Posted March 6 What if when Giant Gonzales came to WWF Russo was in charge of creative so he got a Val Venis type of gimmick where he seduces his opponents girl friends ... and he's know as El flagrante

JLowe Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Last night I was having some beers at home and looking for something to watch while my wife did her perler crafting, and YouTube recommended me Halloween Havoc ‘89. I was a freshman in college at this point and was not watching wrestling, much less PPVs, so I had never seen it. Pretty good card overall, a couple of early stinkers (Z-Man vs Rotunda could’ve been a 50s match with its pacing and restholds). One thing that was really funny was good old JR in his full carny bullshit athletic credentials mode. Talking about Lex Luger being the youngest professional football player ever at 19 (which he wasn’t), having a 7-year career (which he didn’t). He was claiming that Brian Pillman played nose tackle in college, which was incredulous even by his standards. Of course, at this point Doom was masked and unidentified, so he didn’t get a chance to blow his wad over Reed and Simmons. Best match was Doom vs. Steiners, unsurprisingly. Main event was the legendary Thundersome match with Flair and Sting vs. Muta and Funk. The electrified cage was a total dud, despite a pre-match thing where some of the Halloween decorative burlap draping catching fire from the electricity (and a hilarious, spontaneous moment where Muta blew mist at it). It was eventually changed to “well, the upper parts of the cage are electrified”, and Muta either sold a moment where he grabbed a segment and got shocked, or got legit shocked. After that, people were climbing all over the cage without a single jolt. They did have some fun using a noose dangling from the top of the cage to do Tarzan swinging kicks. I enjoyed seeing young, prime Sting (my favorite wrestler) and though about how it was 35 years later when he and Muta would both have their final matches. 2 1

Yep, and The Fridge was first team in ‘83 when Pillman was second team. And Luger did play about seven years of professional football. He bounced around the CFL, NFL, and USFL from 79-85. So, JR wasn’t spewing bullshit, but did overstate Luger’s success as a pro football player. Edited March 7 by Log 2
odessasteps Posted March 7 Posted March 7 May I refer people to a certain podcast discussing football playing wrestlers?

This site shows that there were thunderstorms that day. https://www.wrestlingdata.com/index.php?befehl=shows&show=356637 Its funny as I hadn't tried to search it in awhile, I found my last post about it on DVDVR and it was longer ago than I thought it was, not sure when Wrestlingdata added it. Now I can say I saw a very young Ken Shamrock, not that I have any memory of that and we couldn't take pictures much due to the rain. I sent it to my dad and brother, they got a kick out of it. 2
Cobra Commander Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Ricky Steamboat slumming it a tad in 1990 in NAWA/SAPW makes me wonder what sort of random stuff he would have been doing in 1998 if he had stayed healthy and left WCW. I suspect he probably would have been working Carolinas nostalgia feds in 98 with Omega people wishing they could book him. Steamboat would have been the babyface Smoky never had if he was available to them. Although if he had stayed in WCW, there’s no shortage of awesome matches he could have had. Steamboat vs heel Eddie would have ruled so hard. Steamboat vs 1998 Jericho makes me think that, the Jericho/Malenko feud really had the temperament of a Ricky feud. The heel is gonna do some awful things to our hero and our hero is gonna get his revenge by wrestling him. They probably would have booked Steamboat/Savage in 1997 and had it be nowhere near as good as WM3. But Ricky could have been the dude hovering from being friendly with DDP, Sting, Flair, Piper depending on the week. insert obligatory “turn Ricky heel” idea that wouldn’t have worked

SovietShooter Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Was Steamboat on good terms with Heyman? Because if so, I can see a Franchise vs Steamboat feud in ECW. By all accounts those two did get along when they were tagging in WCW, and Douglas seems to have the utmost respect for Steamboat in the shoot interviews and such that I've seen. 1

It's probably hard to separate between Ricky and Bonnie in regard to Ricky's business but yeah I could see Ricky Steamboat having some good matchups in 96/97/98 ECW if he didn't mind the rest of the promotion and they could sorta work him in a bubble. Steamboat vs Bam Bam would be amazing. Steamboat may or may not jell great with Sabu. Steamboat vs Candido or Storm would have went over great at the time. 1

That's what I was thinking - he could've kinda been in that division of "serious wrestlers" trading the TV title around with Malenko, Guerrero, Scorpio, Jericho, Douglas, Benoit, Van Dam, Lynn, etc etc. Steamboat vs heel Corino w/ Don Callis would've fed families. 1
Log Posted March 7 Posted March 7 38 minutes ago, JLowe said: He was a linebacker though, not a nose tackle. His Wikipedia lists him as a linebacker, but he was an all-American at “middle guard” which is basically defensive tackle/nose tackle.
Cobra Commander Posted March 7 Posted March 7 I guess they could have had Steamboat working a bunch of lucha guys in WCW if they don't mind Steamboat being larger than his opponents. I don't think they would have asked Ricky to work in the Cruiserweight division even if it's possible that his legit weight was under 225 because it would have been a demotion and, once again, being the underdog while larger than his opponents might take some extra work think of it like Steamboat as being sort of the gatekeeper of WCW cruiserweights trying to get into the heavyweight ranks
Technico Support Posted March 7 Posted March 7 (edited) The best part of JR's carny bullshit was: Face Luger: 4.0 GPA with a bachelor's, All American football standout Heel Luger: thrown off the football team for disciplinary reasons Did Simmons and Williams ever cross paths with Ross calling the match? The commentary probably sounded like Emmanuelle. Edited March 7 by Technico Support 3
