I was there live last night and I am relieved to see both the Trios Title matches and Bandido/Andrade matches being very well received by those that watched the PPV. In the room it felt like three post-match surprises and the high quality of Bucks vs FTR and Mox vs Takeshita to start the show burnt the crowd out for a bit, and Brody being a hometown guy taking the loss deflated the crowd somewhat. It felt like in the room that while The Trios Title match and Bandido/Andrade got good reactions that we all would have been much more rabid for those had they occurred earlier in the show.

Nowadays, aren't most Texans apt to be more "all hat, no cattle" than guys from anywhere else?  All I can think of (because I'm watching a Bin Laden documentary) is Bush Jr's cowboy bullshit ("we'll smoke em out!"..."we have a saying in Texas...").  That dude had a lot of John Wayne bluster for a nepo baby from New England.

I guess "Texan who hates Austin-area hipsters" would be far too niche of a feud

I'd say that's just "Stone Cold Steve Austin" but...  he makes an IPA.

"falls count anywhere in the Trader Joe's Parking Lot" is the blowoff for the post-wrestling Austin gimmick

There aren’t hipsters in Austin to hate now, they just hate Austin for the pinko liberals even though there’s less and less of them these days as well.

too tired for a longer thoughtful post but yeah great show despite being too long as usual. i cannot imagine the idea that Hangman never becomes AEW champ again unless he plans on a premature retirement. have to imagine there's that heel turn double cross to go back on his word down the line and I am perfectly ok with that

I haven't read any posts in here yet but I do think Hangman/MJF probably went for maybe one or two more "shock" spots than was necessary, HOWEVER,  the match still delivered the goods and it could not have ended any better.  Hangman's blood getting on the camera and them sticking with that lens was perfect. I don't think it was intentional but it's a once in a lifetime thing that will be remembered forever.  Cinema.

Find another way for Ospreay to return, you can’t build to the end of a match like that and have Takeshita lose.

Edit; Swerve/Brody was a damn fine match and told a great story in 15 or so mins.

So potential match ups coming up are- some variation of Bucks/FTR/C&C, Ospreay/Mox and then probably Ospreay/MJF, Takeshita/Okada, Kenny/Swerve 2, Fletcher/MJF maybe?

Just a thought, but some of these death match, bleeding all the time fuckers should be forced to do Pure Rules matches just to switch it up. Swerve especially. And take in mind that this is ME saying this.

Anyway, I had personal reasons for not watching but this had to be a blast.

It would make sense for at least one of the people in a 45 minute death match to take it easy for at least a week after that match

Meanwhile, just imagining if AEW had a Texan heel around to scoff at the idea of a dude from Virginia trying to make the Texas Death Match his thing

AEW should pick up John Wayne Murdoch for this exact purpose. He's from Waxahachie, Texas, and his Deathmatches make Hangman vs Swerve look tame.

Vertebreaker on concrete (that just through a table got someone stretchered out last month) followed by a finisher for a one count is kinda dumb, not gonna lie.

Zero Hour was ok, with the TBS title match being the high point. One of the least shocking things I have ever heard on commentary was that Lena Kross used to be a runway model . Nothing has ever made more sense.

Ok, you don't have to start EVERY PPV with a match already underway, you know? Jack Perry winning the National title with Tarzan Boy playing in the background was way nicer than his previous singles title wins as a heel.

The next three matches were all awesome but were overshadowed by the returns afterwards. I'm so glad that Ospreay is back and apparently can still fly. Oh, and Okada is going to have a fucking field day talking shit about Takeshita for coming up short in the Continental title match! CopeCage returning was actually a surprise and "Literally Worst Woman On the Planet" returning definitely would have been, if it wasn't for a YouTube notification spoiling it for me! Also, Stokley. I just knew that son of a bitch could walk. Probably could this whole time!

The women's tag title match was a foregone conclusion but still a bit surprised how badly Babes got their asses kicked here. Sucks for Penelope but really awesome for Kross who was really at the perfect place at an (un)fortunate time.

Brody-Swerve next! Ok, this wasn't quite the classic I hoped for but still very good with some vicious stuff from both sides! Ok, Kenny is back so Darby isn't moving onto Swerve just yet, it seems.

Women's world title match was high impact but I was a bit surprised how easily Thekla eventually did get the better of Statlander. Visual pin aside, Stat does not have much of a claim to any rematches for a while after that!

Both Trios matches were excellent and I was actually surprised by both endings as I was thinking heels were gonna take both matches and ended up taking jack shit!

Andrade vs Bandido was amazing, even if the disrobing of the pants took a tad too long. It was good that Andrade used Bandido's wardrobe malfunction to his advantage pretty quickly. When it was on, everything in this one was insane!

Main event went too long but it was sufficiently brutal and I was thinking it would be funny if a kick in tha dick ends this one, and it almost did, twice but not quite. MJF winning other people's speciality matches against them is almost a thing now, but he has lost enough of them that we're not quite there yet. I guess you fucked up here, Hangman! Maybe he'll turn into a zombie and can then challenge again on a technicality?

long promised notes!

- Big Boom etc. have grown on me, to my surprise.  The matches are well laid out, harmless fun on the pre-show, and they always get over.  I popped for Shane Taylor taking a spear from Big Justice and that stupid song is catchy (it's a Run DMC copy, how can it not be)

- I was happy to see Trent and AR Fox in the 21 man, both have been gone for a while.  Rush didn't get an entrance.

- Shibata's casual shove elimination of Dralistico was awesome

- Loved FTR in the vintage C's warmups.  Damn good match, good use of the family & kids to give it a new dynamic.  Stokley was pretty great here as always.  Popped big for the C&C return, looking forward to this

- Loved Toni's finishing sequence of biting Marina's breast-->headbutt->Big Package.  I didn't watch it live (baseball) and the one thing I had spoiled was Rousey.  Awesome vintage 1984 US Champ Roddy Piper jacket she had. I'd like to challenge Mr. Free Speech up in this thread who has a problem with her that apparently they're not actually all that free speech but I really don't want to start a thing.  I don't even know what she said that makes her so awful but whatever

- Show flowed really well here with the transition right into Mox and Takeshita.  Another great match from them, but I think they put them in the ring together too much on TV, which after their previous solo matches makes everything they do together feel like I've already seen it.  If I'm feeling tired of a matchup this good it mean you've ran it too much.  Let's get on with the Callis Family drama please.

- Good to see Will back but damn that was fast and he was looking smaller and softer.  Still moving incredibly fast with that Hidden Blade though......he just fucking DROPPED Mox and started pounding him with fists and 12-6 elbows, that was great.  So much shit happens in AEW and so much has changed since then I'd honestly forgotten that Death Riders took him out.  Video of him in the lab was great as well.

- Loved Brody/Swerve.  Brody needs a big win against someone sooner than later, he doesn't win enough for someone who's supposedly in contention for "most dangerous man in AEW".  I did love the booking of how they transitioned from Swerve and Kenny to this based off a throwaway line from Kenny that infuriated Swerve.  Absolutely down for Rd. II of Swerve and Kenny, first match was incredible

- I still need to watch the two trios matches and Andrade/Bandido, glad to hear all were well received.  That stretch and the first half of the women's tag were the victims of me watching this late night/early AM after the baseball game.  I find this current Willow/Harley act really obnoxious and there's more babyface women's teams to challenge (maybe they can bring TayJay out of mothballs) so make of that what you will

- Hangman's music on the entrance and MJF's pre-match video were top notch.  Loved the Terry Funk tribute.  MJF's "NOT AGAIN!" when he realizes there's a dog collar around his neck was fantastic, as was "HE'S A GOOD BOY!" chant as Hangman dogwalks him back into the ring later on.  This was an incredible match, and I'm totally down with Hardcore MJF.  Tables and Tacks was also incredible.

I have an open mind about the Toni/Ronda prospect. Mainly because I want Timeless "MMA Jeff Jarrett" Toni Storm training for her fight tapping out toddlers in BJJ tournaments and such like.

The idea of a Swerve/Hangman 2 man power trip intrigues me also...

She's said some pretty transphobic things in relation to Fallon Fox, and then there's the Sandy Hook tweets (that she apologized for). Basically said that the children and their families were paid actors, false flag conspiracy stuff that's just the norm (sadly) surrounding school shootings when they happen. She apologized for one (and wasn't your bog standard "sorry" post) and hasn't for the other (Fallon Fox).

People online comparing this to Trey Miguel or the Briscoes need to take a step back, though. Ronda Rousey is several steps above them in terms of a name, especially to TV executives. Of course they're going to overlook things like that. I'm not defending it, but it's just the reality of the situation.

My thoughts on the main:

  • A few bits that I liked, such as Max realizing Hangman was about to get him after the groin shrug taunt but running into the trash can lid anyway, or the Heatseeker reversed into the Deadeye
  • Great finish and beautiful bit with the camera, completely by chance.
  • Tables and Tacks with Briscoe was a much, much stronger match, because so much of that match was about anticipation, really building to payoffs, and so much of this match was just about doing stuff and then doing more stuff.
  • I can accept the notion that Hangman lost because of that excess, that he wanted to keep Max suffering because he might never get him in this situation again so he didn't put him away and go for a win, but I'm not sure that plays out in the text itself.

I'm having a hard time with figuring out how a company that allows free speech (Hangman, Brody, etc.) is also the same company that has shitheads.  It's bad enough having Gabe on there but somehow worse having Ronda.  On top of that TK had glowing things to say about her in the scrum which was disheartening.  I get how she can be seen as a nice and charming person but surely one has to know brining her in is a bad idea.

This is the first time where I feel compelled enough to contact them somehow and voice my displeasure.  This should not stand and my hope is enough people do the same it might make a difference.

This is the exact comment I was referring to.  How can you have a hard time figuring out how a company that allows free speech would employ people you agree with and people you disagree with?  THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT FREE SPEECH IS!!!  I didn't want to derail or argue with anyone though, so even this is probably a mistake

I didn't even know who Fallon Fox is and had to look this up (from 2013 btw, before this whole debate really took off in the mainstream).  I agree with Ronda's general sentiment (that someone who went through puberty as a male shouldn't be fighting genetic women in combat sports) but she also didn't say it in the most graceful way (talking about someone having their pecker chopped off.  she's crude.).  I don't see that as transphobic but obviously mileage varies on this topic.  Sandy Hook shit is insane, glad she recanted that and apologized

I'm pretty sure Ronda is left leaning on a lot of things.  You can't put everyone in a box politically.  I'm a daily viewer of the Majority Report w/ Sam Seder but as you can tell I'm much more libertarian than he is and more on the 'dirtbag left' side of things.  You want problematic check out her opponent Gina Carano.  Ronda may not be perfect, but who is?

As for her showing up in AEW?  She's got a fight to promote and she's mad at TKO/WWE.  It makes sense.  IF she's going to get involved in-ring it'll be after the fight, this felt more like a one-off surprise/future tease to me

Im sorry but no. You dont get to claim free speech when it's hate speech and being a literal piece of shit telling parents whose children were murdered in a school shooting that it was all fake.

You do you, but not understanding the nuance of why people are unhappy to see her is a you problem, not a free speech problem.

ETA: Im so sick of people conflating free speech and freedom from consequences. Is she in prison? No. Thats what free speech entitles you to. No matter how dumb and vile, your words dont get you arrested.

That has nothing to do with freedom from consequences. You dont get to say whatever vile shit you want then claim free speech free speech everyone has to be okay with it! No. People dont have to be okay with it.

(And I personally am not even outraged she's here. I just have a little bit of consideration for others that do feel that way. Wish more people would try empathy and understanding before hate ranting.)

Just watched Mox/Takeshita on Dailymotion. A bit/way too headdrop-kickout-shockface for me. The no-selling the suplexes exchange especially. File shut off before Ospreay, dammit. I guess I should waaaaaaatch (checks lineup) Swerve/Brody next? I'm not checking out the main until later, that sucker is 45 minutes right, I gotta be in the mood.

EDIT: Shit, I'm not finding anything else on here. Ah well. Maybe the Russians have it all.

Swerve vs Brody had it's moments, but it didn't reach the potential I thought it could have. I think part of that was knowing there was zero chance Brody was winning. Brody is RIGHT THERE on being a guy that could break through, but that logjam at the top is thick and that's even with Hangman there. Plus, as much as I had hope this would be the year with chaos in the world title picture with more people getting runs with that title just to show anything can happen and no one is safe because everyone is that fucking good, it seems like we're right back to long title reigns. The main thing I'm fixated on is MJF's last run. I don't think this one lasts 400 fucking days, but Joe's lasting a month was pretty refreshing. Actually, Joe beating Hangman was a bit of a holy shit moment even though it seemed to have the dual purpose of also elevating Hook who seems dead in the water now. Dude has lost all of his aura. If that guy could cut a promo like his dad then I would be more accepting of him, but he sounds exactly like someone who is trying to sound tough and trying to lower their voice to overcompensate for the fact that they sound anything but tough.

You know what, fuck it.  I'm not going to engage.  This isn't the place for it.  I'll admit I could have rephrased it better but that's about it.
