The Tigers have signed Justin Verlander on a one-year deal to return to Detroit.

There's some kid who got a Rockies Kris Bryant jersey for Christmas in 2022 who's worn it like two times in the last 4 years.

Deal is 1/13, with 11m deferred out.  Essentially a Tigers Pension plan.

I don't hate it. JV was good the last two months of the season for Houston last year. He'll be back end of the rotation, just expected to eat some innings and be solid. He can do that.

I am assuming you mean San Francisco since he was with the GIants all last season (and it was weird)

And it appears at least part of the reason the Tigers made the move is because it was announced that Reese Olson will miss the season after having shoulder surgery

Not really shocking since he was already hurt but he tried the "REHAB WILL SOLVE EVERYTHING" route and it didn't

Speaking of all the bad injury news getting dumped yesterday

The Braves announced that Spencer Schwellenbach is starting the season on the 60 Day IL due to inflammation on his right elbow (I am sure that is good). Schwellenbach said he started feeling discomfort about 10 days ago and he might need surgery

Toronto had it even worse

Anthony Santander's contract is already a disaster as the team announced he will miss the majority of the season rehabbing his shoulder injury. But the worse news (though not shocking to anyone) is that Shane Bieber is hurt. He will start on the 15 day as he is still dealing with "arm fatigue".

Oh and Bowden Franchis needs TJ

In lolMets news,

Juan Soto is moving to LF.

More importantly, Francisco Lindor broke the hammate bone in his left hand and is going to have surgery. (Apparently to just remove the bone?) This will keep him out of all Spring Training and he may miss the beginning of the season.

D'backs OF Corbin Carroll is now in a similar boat as Lindor and also broke his hammate bone.  He'll miss the WBC and is in doubt for Opening Day.

I did. Thanks for the correction.

And it was clearly doom and gloom day because here is Jeff Passan's article about the same exact topic

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47620464/mlb-2026-kyle-tucker-los-angeles-dodgers-free-agency-labor-cba-offseason

Quote

THERE IS A group of fans who are angry at baseball. There are a lot of them, and they do not exist only on social media. They are inside of group chats that talk about how much money the Los Angeles Dodgers are spending after winning the past two World Series, and they are in cities big and small that look at the Dodgers with envy masked by eye rolls and curses, and they might just want to devote more time to the game -- maybe they love the pitch clock or Shohei Ohtani or Aaron Judge or the in-person vibe or any number of things about the game today worth loving -- but they're not sure the whole thing is fair.

Owners are angry, too. Their franchise valuations aren't growing as quickly as their billionaire peers' in other sports, and they blame the system that governs Major League Baseball. They don't like it. Nearly every owner believes MLB needs a salary cap. Its presence, owners say, immediately would juice franchise values, with the labor cost essentially fixed and no more chasing Dodgers teams spending $500 million annually on players. At the same time, they say, it would provide a pathway to competitive balance, which they believe is entirely out of whack. They think a salary cap will fix everything, even if it means jeopardizing the 2027 season. "They are ready to burn the f---ing house down," one high-ranking team official said.

Players are also angry. At what feels to them like an inevitability that after the current collective bargaining agreement expires Dec. 1, the owners are going to lock them out and shut down the game with no end in sight. At the creeping notion MLB not only is going to propose a cap in the bargaining leading up to the expiration but will hold firm on its inclusion in further offers. At the reality that a majority of fans in public and private polling support MLB adopting a capped system, more out of familiarity than any sort of compelling argument for it compared with alternative structures. The players simply want to play ball and receive a fair portion of the $12 billion-plus in revenue the league generates annually. Their ability to do both, they say, shouldn't be neutered by owners who four years ago voted unanimously in favor of the system they now deride.

MLB Owners voted to crackdown on 1B and 3B coaches leaving their respective boxes early

The rule was already on the books but now will be strictly enforced.

This is in an effort to curb pitch stealing

Quote

Base coaches in Major League Baseball will have to remain in their respective coaches' boxes until the pitch is thrown after owners voted to enforce the rule Thursday at their annual meetings in Florida.

The goal is to curb coaches' ability to ascertain what pitch is coming via pitch tipping -- a practice that has become more prevalent over the past few years.

MLB's joint competition committee recently agreed to the move before owners voted on it.

The issue came up because first- and third-base coaches have been moving up and down the line more frequently to facilitate better viewing angles of pitchers, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Based on pregame homework, coaches are able to figure out what pitch is about to be thrown and then either relay that to the hitter directly or indirectly via a runner on second base.

----------

Teams scour video before games to pick up the smallest patterns by pitchers or even catchers that indicate what kind of pitch is coming. Those patterns could involve anything from small body movements to finger placements in or out of the glove or simply how big a breath a pitcher takes before throwing a certain pitch.

The time that used to be spent on stealing signs from the catcher -- now mostly eliminated due to the use of PitchCom -- is now being used for stealing pitches. None of the pregame work with video is illegal, and neither is coaches or players figuring out what pitch is coming in real time. But MLB felt coaches moving up and down the line for better angles was getting out of hand.

The rule already on the books states that coaches are not allowed out of the boxes while the pitcher is in contact with the pitching rubber until the ball is in play or caught by the catcher. The one exception is coaches are allowed to move closer to the dugout or stands for safety reasons. Moving up and down the line or toward the playing field won't be tolerated anymore.

Coaches will first get a warning and then are subject to ejection if they don't stay in their boxes.

Philadelphia has released 3B Nick Castellanos after he didn't show up for Spring Training.

Miami, Sacramento, and St. Louis are expected to have interest.

[EDIT -- When asked Miami explicitly said they are not interested in Castellanos]

To be fair - the Phillies told Castellanos not to show up because they were either gonna trade him or release him

Why they waited this long holding out hope that they were gonna find a sucker for him and his contract is beyond me

Fun fact: Santander is the biggest star from the 2015 Lake County Captains, for whom I announced. Bobby Bradley and Yu Chang were supposed to be the gems from that team.
