Dolfan in NYC Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Something... something.. Journalistic ethics about betting on the team you're covering... That said... lol Hard Rock's two games away from bankruptcy.
Dolfan in NYC Posted January 8 Author Posted January 8 Hey, so it looks like FanDuel (or more accurately the people who own the network naming rights) are out of money and missing payments. The Miami Marlins cancelled their broadcast contract after the network defaulted on payment.
RIPPA Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Richard Deitsch has moved to the Sports Business Journal after his contract with the Athletic ended at the end of the year

supremebve Posted January 8 Posted January 8 At no point in my entire lifetime did I think it would be possible to lose money with sports, but here we are.

You should watch English football, where just about every team loses money. Esp in the lower leagues, where teams pay > 100% of revenue on salaries.
hammerva Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Love hearing media play the "will someone think of the children" because one of them at the end of the Jaguars game Saturday tell the head coach that they did a great job and "hold your head up". As someone from DC area, we are used to sports media basically getting on their knees to make the local football team feel good about themselves. And that is when they were complete trash on and off the field

And that is when they were complete trash on and off the field I mean, we should encourage more people to shut what they call the fuck up. Literally no one expected the Jaguars to be as good as they were this season. I think a huge part of why people are mad at this is because most of these people built their careers on shitting on anyone who isn't a champion. The Jags had a good season that surpasses pretty much everyone's expectation. Liam Coen and the Jaguars should stand with their heads up high for their season. Anyone who has a problem with that can shut the fuck up. 3
Log Posted January 12 Posted January 12 I agree that the Jags had a season that exceeded expectations, and they should be proud of that. I also don't think people should call the season any sort of failure. They improved on last season, and are heading in a good direction. All that said, a member of the media covering the team, a journalist, should not be the one saying that at a press conference in the way it was done. I'm not bothered by it as much as I am by the doomsayers who think every loss is the end of the franchise. I am bothered by it, though, as a former journalist. It was just too much of a dropping of the veil of impartiality for me.

It was just too much of a dropping of the veil of impartiality for me. I can see that, but on the list of journalism crimes that I'm going to stress over, this is near the bottom of the list. Pretty much every sports writer is a sports writer because they were a sports fan. I get it, you're supposed to pretend that's not the case, but we all know that it is. We're at the point where I think all of the most prominent sports journalists are openly rooting for and/or against at least one particular team. As long as she's willing to criticize the team when they do have a disappointing season, I do not see any issue with her statement during the press conference. I think fairness is more important than impartiality when covering a team. I don't have a problem with praise of a job well done, just like I don't have an issue with the condemnation of a job done poorly. I do have an issue with the notion that criticism is valid, but praise is not. 1
RIPPA Posted January 14 Posted January 14 For the first time ever - the majority of the Nationals games will not be broadcast on a station owned by the Orioles The Nats announced they will partner with MLB this season to distribute their games. It will be the first time they aren't on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) This ups the number of teams using MLB to distribute games to 7 (and that isn't counting the 9 teams that have to figure out what they doing after breaking with Main Street Sports)
supremebve Posted January 15 Posted January 15 I'm going to preface this by saying that I know this is stupid. I know, but I heard it, had a thought, and I don't really have any other place to extrapolate this thought. On Bill Simmons podcast, he had a mini-mailbag where someone asked what retired athlete is capable of being O.J. where no matter what was going on ever channel would preempt anything on to show the car chase. Bill Simmons said the #1 draft pick is Peyton Manning, who is probably top 5, but there is no way he's #1. This is probably his Boston bias showing, but the #1 draft pick is Tom Brady. Not only is he more famous than Peyton Manning, this theoretical murder victim is also world famous. The #2 draft pick is Michael Jordan, he's the most famous athlete of the last 50 years. The rest of the top 5 probably has to be Charles Barkley, Derek Jeter, and Peyton Manning in some order.

When it comes to fame, it's clearly Jordan. When it becomes to who the theoretical victim would be, it's Tiger based on marriage history and Brady due to fame. I literally just got out of the shower and feel like I need to go take another one after typing that.
odessasteps Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Is this only for American athletes? Id think Messi/Ronaldo would be on the list, along with people like Zidane, OG Ronaldo, Rooney mayb.

As a handsome American, I have to admit that I know that soccer exists and is extremely popular, but the original question was about who could do a crime that would cause every channel to preempt a championship game or series to cover the car chase. Across the pond, all of these guys would absolutely be in the running, but over here in the U.S. of A, we wouldn't really care. Soccer is probably the #5 sport in the states, but there isn't a single soccer player in the country who is so famous that he couldn't go to the grocery store and buy his own groceries. 1
zendragon Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Charles Barkley committing a murder and then low speed chase that ensues due to him attempting to waddle away is low key hilarious 2
hammerva Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Notice the number of people in sports media who was up in arms about the reporter in Jacksonville telling the coach to "keep your head up" are now acting like Josh Allen is having a mental crisis and that we need to support him in his time of need 1
