Might as well start this too

Justin Herbert isn't starting this weekend vs. the Broncos.

Which means, Denver is probably winning that game... Which means Denver gets the #1 seed... Which means LA plays New England on full rest.

With the Falcons leading the Rams 21-0 at halftime of Monday Night Football (?!), this suddenly becomes relevant.

The Panthers at Buccaneers game on Saturday afternoon is currently being advertised as winner-take-all for the NFC South. And, if Carolina wins it, they'll win the division, no questions asked.

However. . .

If the Falcons hold on to beat the Rams tonight and Tampa beats the Panthers on Saturday afternoon, Carolina can still win the NFC South if the Falcons beat the Saints in the Sunday early window. That's because that scenario would set all three teams at 8-9, and the tiebreaker would be head-to-head records against the other two teams.

Carolina is 3-1 against Tampa and Atlanta, Tampa is 2-2, and Atlanta is 1-3. So, Carolina would be your division winner, due at least in part to the Bucs pissing away a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter against Atlanta on Thursday night a couple weeks ago.

The NFC South, ladies and gentlemen.

The last week of the NFL season is always fun as you have 20 or so teams not caring if they win, a few teams hoping they lose, and then a handful of teams trying really really hard to win. At least the teams trying to win are playing each other, which is good for making a couple important games but then makes a dozen games not matter at all.

I like Dallas this week because they announced they are playing Dak and their starters

Also the Falcons win eliminated the Jets from possibly getting the #1 draft pick (Atlanta winning changed the SOS tiebreaker and there is now no way the Jets can leap either the Giants or Raiders)

NFC Seeding Scenarios

#1 seed - Winner of Seahawks at Niners

#2 seed - Chicago gets the 2 spot if they beat Detroit. If they lose and Philadelphia wins, Philly goes to 2 and Chicago goes to 3

#3 seed - Will be either Chicago or Philadelphia (see above)

#4 seed - Whoever wins the NFC South. If Carolina beats Tampa on Saturday, they win the South. If Tampa wins and Atlanta beats New Orleans on Sunday, Carolina still wins the South. If Tampa wins and New Orleans beats Atlanta, Tampa wins the South.

#5 seed - If San Francisco beats Seattle, Seattle is the 5 seed. If Seattle beats San Francisco and Los Angeles beats Arizona, Los Angeles is the 5 seed and San Francisco falls to 6.

#6 seed - Will be either San Francisco or Los Angeles (see above)

#7 seed - Green Bay is the 7 seed

AFC Seeding Scenarios

#1 seed - If Denver beats the Chargers, they're the #1 seed. If Denver loses and New England beats Miami, they're the #1 seed. If Denver and New England both lose and Jacksonville beats Tennessee, they're the #1 seed.

#2 seed - If Denver and New England both win, Denver is #1 and New England is #2. If Denver wins, New England loses, and Jacksonville wins, Denver is #1 and Jacksonville is #2. If Denver loses, New England wins, and Jacksonville wins, New England is #1 and Jacksonville is #2.

#3 seed - Houston can potentially jump to #3 if they beat Indianapolis and Jacksonville loses. Otherwise, the top 3 seeds will be one of the combinations of DEN-NE-JAX detailed earlier.

#4 seed - Whoever wins the AFC North will be the #4 seed.

#5 seed - If Houston beats Indianapolis, they're the 5 seed. If Houston wins and Jacksonville loses and Buffalo loses, Jacksonville is the 5 seed. If Houston loses and the Chargers win, Los Angeles is the 5 seed. If Buffalo wins and the Chargers lose and either Houston or Jacksonville loses, Buffalo is the 5 seed.

#6 seed - If the Chargers, Houston, and Jacksonville all win, Los Angeles is the 6 seed. If Houston and Buffalo win while Jacksonville and the Chargers lose, Jacksonville is the 6 seed. If Houston loses and Buffalo and the Chargers have opposite results, Houston is the 6 seed. If Buffalo wins, the Chargers lose, and Jacksonville and Houston both win, Buffalo is the 6 seed.

#7 seed - If Buffalo loses or if Jacksonville, Houston, and the Chargers all win, Buffalo is the 7 seed. Jacksonville is the 7 seed if they lose, Houston, Buffalo, and the Chargers all win, and the results of 5 other games tip the strength of victory tiebreaker in the Chargers' favor. If Houston loses and Buffalo and the Chargers both win, they're the 7 seed. If the Chargers lose and Buffalo wins, they're the 7 seed.

Man, the NFC was way easier to type out.

All the scenarios, including the ones that figure in ties, are here.

Colts announced they will start Riley Leonard on Sunday

It is unclear if Phillip Rivers will be the backup or the emergency QB

People have figured out that due to the changing SOS tiebreaker - the Giants aren't a lock to get #1 even if they lose and the Raiders win. They need at least 2 other specific games to go their way.

And the Cowboys have just announced that they've released Trevon Diggs.

Banner day for the Diggs family today so far.

IF the Raiders win.  Sure.  That's a flow chart for no apparent reason.

Someone put a little extra "Christmas cheer" in the water in Boston or something?

This is one of those, Christmas might be the most wonderful time of the year for you, but it's often the worst time of the year for others.

The Raiders beating the Chiefs, while simultaneously tanking, would be the most Raiders thing possible.

Carolina is playing like a team that hasn't been in this situation before.  That flee flicker call almost near the red zone is just dumb as hell

Man, Carolina had three egregiously bad or missed calls against them in less than ten minutes of game time (whistling a obvious backwards pass down and then claiming it went out of bounds even though it was clearly picked up two yards from the sideline. Cost the Panthers six yards and basically killed a drive, followed by no flag when a Buc ripped the helmet off a Panther, and then that was followed by an absolutely absurd offensive pass interference call against them.) Then right after that there was a rather questionable DPI called against Carolina as well. Not as bad as those other three, but damn.

I don't think the refs were actually biased, but damn did they seem like it for a good stretch of the second quarter there.

clearly the only rational way to settle the "losing records in the playoffs" thing is to add 4 expansion teams, gather the money paid by the people running those 4 teams, then switch to 3 divisions of 6 teams each

  • AFC East: Bills, Dolphins, Jaguars, Jets, Patriots, expansion London
  • AFC Central: Bengals, Browns, Colts, Ravens, Steelers, Titans
  • AFC West: Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, Raiders, Texans, expansion San Diego
  • NFC East: Buccaneers, Commies, Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, Panthers
  • NFC Central: Bears, Falcons, Lions, Packers, Vikings, expansion St. Louis
  • NFC West: Cardinals, 49ers, Rams, Saints, Seahawks, expansion Utah

of course this won't happen for a bunch of reasons, but it feels like it would be harder for every team to finish 8-9 in a 6 team division where you play 10 games vs the division
