Things I Remember From This Week's Edition of AEW Dynamite:

We interrupt this announcement of a new title for Samoa Joe to threaten violence towards Tony Schiavone

Hey, the fun team of Harley and Willow won

Cesaro carrying Orange up the steps

How do they split the million dollar prize three ways

Hey, we're gonna get Mark Briscoe being forced into the Callis family

Brody King's hand going through the wall

See, other people quit to the Scorpion too

Mina hitting her taunts early to try and power up against Bayne

Opps wrecking shit to retain the titles

Hangman vs Powerhouse next week

Posted

Now THAT was one hell of a show! I'm not even sure I have much to write about, it was just so uniformly good across the board.

Spoiler

- Did Joe turn off the mic on accident? And not even notice? Haha... Someone's gonna have to tell me who's on Eddie's House of 1000 Corpses imitation shirt, too.

- Claudio/Orange was the match of the night. Claudio looked the best he has in ages. Orange is a perfect opponent because he can just beast him and they can do all kinds of interesting stuff.

- Bucks shirt looked like a Cash Money bootleg

- The women's tag was a solid-as-hell AEW-style tag, fast and exciting and Willow was working super hard, just killing folks. Harley is incredibly good this early along. Unfortunately, given the brackets, it looks like this tournament is gonna take F O R E V E R.

- The Hurters looked so fly (esp. Bobby's jacket) and unless I'm incorrect, it looked like none of them even turned from facing the hard cam when Ricochet came out to yell at them. What a "fuck you".

- Darby biting that spot on the arm of Garcia was so... owie. Anyone watching that could feel it like he was doing it to them. Then he just freaked in ecstacy like a total psycho. Another great match with a great finish.

- "Bloody hemp cologne", "come do commentary on one of my orgies", god I love Toni. ANOTHER solid match with a great brawl-out at the end. Mercedes deciding not to get in the ring was exactly what she should have done.

- And we close with a fine six-man. I am worried that Hanger got hurt though, and Eddie absolutely has to lose the plancha now, plus it look like he involuntarily collapsed trying to get up in the corner at the end. Shibata being a dick to him during the commercials made me loathe the PnP once again.

Wotta show!

Luchasaurus gets the extra penny. Because he's Luchasaurus.

Really awesome show. Pretty much uniformly great across the board. Quality wrestling and some really nice angles/story progression/stakes building. That Claudio/Orange match in particular was a banger. Also, Ultimo looking so fine my mum would keep her in the top cabinet and only bring her down when we had good company.

Harley and Willow are awesome together and Mercedes/Athena were pulling out some slick double team moves as well.  That match was great.  I don't think we'll be seeing much of Mercedes and Athena as a team but we should.

As much as I don't really want it,  HOOK needs to go to NXT because he isn't getting much better at all.  His promos are really bad given his personality and he is still pretty basic in the ring.  That is improving I will say.  Now HOOK in NXT won't be much better than let's say Lexis King who is just a filler on the show right now.  But he would be much better

Yeah a new belt just reeks of the worse part of the Crockett period.   I mean who is going to the Nelson Royal or Denny Brown of AEW

Claudio Castignoli is so consistently excellent in every match he wrestles. And easily one of the most underappreciated top level talents going. TK knows it. He's such a gamer and so unselfish. To no surprise, he and Orange had great chemistry. Excellent match and even more excellent closing stretch. A very nice win for the Emissary of Violence.

Very happy with the Willow-Harley team getting the win, but also really liked this Athena-Mercedes team. Hoping for more of this asskicking duo. It'd be a shame to break up that kind of magic.

I love Claudio Castagnoli. Can do it all in the ring. One of the strongest wrestlers ever and one of the best bases as well.

If I ran my own promotion:

Men's World Championship.

Men's Intercontinental Championship.

Men's World Tag Team Championship.

Women's World Championship.

Women's Intercontinental Championship.

Women's World Tag Team Championship.

That's it.

Wow, Joe was about to "Paul Heyman" Tony, before Hangman got involved. That was perplexing.

Ok, so Claudio was coming to the ring with a Death Riders sleeveless hoodie. For the first time, I'm interested in AEW merch. The match was excellent, as one might expect. Wow, I have a feeling it will all be on Roddy's shoulders on Collision. Garcia isn't beating Darby, c'mon!

Too bad for Aminata, the face team lost a hard hitter for Blood and Guts.

A huge win for Babes of Wrath! Mercedes' gear was one of the more interesting ones she's ever worn so far.

Way better effort by Garcia than I ever would have imagined, also PAC and Yuta modeling some new Death Riders merch as well, but neither of those items caught my interest. Big pressure on Roddy!

Ok, the National title had better look something similar to the one Tully carried in '86. If this is just a way to get a title on Lashley or Ricochet because they don't have any plans to put any of the "actual" titles on one them, is seriously lame.

Ok, FTR being total dicks, as usual!

That was a thinly veiled threat by Okada to the Bucks, right there! So, 3 new members for the Don Callis Family after Full Gear?

Luchasaurus being THIS into cash is pretty funny. I guess something did rub off on him during his time with Christian Cage, after all?

Mina actually did better against Bayne than pretty much anyone besides Toni!

Powerhouse Hobbs gave both Hook and Hangman the keyboard treatment! Damn, Hobbs vs Hangman falls count anywhere should be amazing!

If I ran AEW:

AEW Men's World Championship.

AEW International Championship.

AEW World Tag Team Championship.

AEW Women's World Championship.

AEW TBS Championship.

AEW Women's World Tag Team Championship.

That's it. My biggest call was whether to keep the AEW TNT Championship or the AEW International Championship. The AEW TNT Championship is the longest secondary championship in AEW but I think it got surpassed by the AEW International Championship.

To your last point, if you asked that question a few years ago I'd have said Matt Sydal.

Ricochet is a bump machine and fun character, but he could really use a mouthpiece. Pretty lame promo here - ugh, don’t call your opponents old. WTF!? It also made Lashley/Benjamin look kinda silly to just stand there and take that shit. I will say bad promos kinda work for this character, but not as well as good ones would. This belt does feel destined for Ric and I’m all for it. No sense questioning the overkill of another title while other new titles are still being decided. At this point, I just embrace too many championships! Yes, sir I’ll have another. And another. And another.

As an Eagles fan, I love that Ricochet has been using that for heel heat when he can. Waiting for the day he pulls that shit in Dallas though.

Great night for wrestling. I really loved OC/Claudio and Mercedes and Athena vs. Willow and Harley. That death glare Mercedes was shooting Harley during the entrances was great too. Bayley is not Mercedes's greatest nemesis... it's now Mini Mone.

Brodie King being straight out of a fucking horror movie..... don't think anyone else could have pulled off that sell like Stokely too.

Underappreciated Ben Folds bit. He played a parody/alcoholic version of himself on a really dope FX series, "You're The Worst." He was a recurring character in the last few seasons.

I don't think anyone needs to go to NXT, to improve. It's not exactly got a track record of... most wrestlers who came out of WWE and became good were already indie wrestlers who were well on their way. Most of the WWE creations were kind of bad in NXT, kind of bad early on in main roster WWE, and only got good after they'd been on the road for a few years. And an awful lot of wrestlers who were supposed to be WWE creations got cut, and are out of the business.

I don't think it's an environment conducive to improvement, because I don't think the people running the show know what they're supposed to be developing their trainees into.

Dragon, obviously! Has to call himself Mercedes in AEW for some reason and comes to the ring with almost all Women's wrestling titles across the globe, for some reason a lot!

Claudio's back is so shredded and I've never noticed it until hebwalked around the ring with OC in a suplex position.  Dear God. I feel like that Vince meme over here.

I'll say this about The Cold-Hearted, Handsome Devil HOOK, I like his promo.  He sounds like a 20something in this generation.  I wish he did more indies and was a little better in the ring by this point,  though.
