the Rockies new head of baseball ops is Paul DePodesta (currently of the Cleveland Browns, guessing the entire board is old enough to remember him as a baseball GM)

so this is sorta like hiring Bill Watts to book your promotion in the early 2000s

He is way, way younger than I thought. But... yeah.

So the As attempt to manipulate Nick Kurtz's service time blew up in their face as Kurtz won the AL Rookie of the Year and by doing so was retroactively awarded a full year of service time

This is one of the rules now due to the Prospect Promotion Incentive

So Kurtz is now scheduled to be a FA after the 2030 season (instead of 2031 as the As had hoped)

Austin Nola, who spent a few weeks on the Rockies in 2025, is retiring to be the Mariners bullpen coach. He also signed a minor league deal with the Braves three weeks before getting that coaching job

Posted

In a similar story to the Nola one - it appears that Max Stassi has retired since the Angels just hired him to be a catching coach

Posted

And ANOTHER one - Travis Jankowski is the Rangers new 1st Base Coach so I guess he retired too

Well Padres ownership is the latest to run with the "we are exploring possibly, maybe, selling"

Looks like we have our first signing of the offseason

Josh Naylor staying in Seattle on a 5 year deal

Angels trade Taylor Ward to the Orioles for Grayson Rodriguez

Ward will be a FA after next season

Rodriguez is under team control until 2029 but also has a arm being held together by silly putty

New York Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham, Detroit Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff and Chicago Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga accepted their qualifying offers Tuesday, meaning they'll return to their respective teams in 2026 at salaries of $22.025 million.

It is the most players who have ever accepted the QO in a single year

With the deadline to get guys onto the 40 man before the Rule 5 draft - teams did a lot of shuffling of their rosters including some names getting DFAed

Some of them where

  • Frankie Montas (by the Mets) - will miss the entire season due to TJ so the Mets are eating the final $17 million of his deal
  • Nathaniel Lowe (by the Red Sox)
  • JJ Bedlay (by the Athletics)
  • Christopher Morel (by the Rays)
  • Nic Enright (by the Guardians) - another victim of missing the upcoming season due to TJ so can't afford to clog up a roster spot during the offseason

I'm not looking forward to the pile of Cub fan posts coming up about righting the wrong of letting Morel go in the first place.

The Cards continue their complete teardown by trading Sonny Gray to the Red Sox

Quote

The Cardinals and Red Sox announced a trade sending right-hander Sonny Gray and cash considerations to Boston in exchange for righty Richard Fitts, left-handed pitching prospect Brandon Clarke and a player to be named later or cash. The Cardinals are reportedly including $20MM to help offset Gray’s salary.

The Red Sox converted Gray's contract into a one year deal with a mutual option that will pay Gray a guaranteed $41 million!!!! ($31 million for the season, $10 million buyout)

In what has felt inevitable for awhile now - the Angels are in discussion with Anthony Rendon about a contract buyout with the expectation that Rendon will retire
