Dolfan in NYC Posted August 1 Posted August 1 What? How the hell is it August already? Anyway, here are all the champs as of today: Gah, how does Matt Riddle get creepier every time I look at him. 1
Shartnado Posted August 1 Posted August 1 Becky Lynch and MJF both in the classic sequel to Shooter McGavin, Shooter McGavin 2 was something else. Both performances were more than a little cringe, but that totally went with the territory. I enjoyed myself while watching it. 3
The Comedian Posted August 1 Posted August 1 I loved Happy Gilmore 2. LOL'd like over 50 times. Loved that they turned Spoiler Shooter Spoiler babyface. 3

stuntmanc Posted August 1 Posted August 1 I have absolutely nothing but good things to say about Happy Gilmore 2. It was just a wonderful blast of nostalgia and I wholly appreciated that face turn. Also, Haley Joel Osment really does look like an oversized cabbage patch doll. 4

I'm pretty sure even HJO himself can't deny that fact! Also, anyone who hasn't seen that movie yet, go watch it because it makes you feel all fuzzy inside while still being funny af at times. Also, the cameos and flashbacks are amazing! Edited August 1 by Shartnado Really, go watch it! 1
Cobra Commander Posted August 1 Posted August 1 Listening to the McAdam pod where they mentioned a 1975 Portland angle where the sponsors (Tom Peterson et al) ended up putting a bounty on the lead heel tag team in an effort to drive them out of town, which is both unique and also kinda makes sense, when usually heels offered bounties but this time the heels are having a bounty put on them. I guess the closest we could do to that these days is if Randy Savage was alive and was the representative of Slim Jim's sending guys after some foe of Slim Jim's. It's probably also a tad harder to have the corporate sponsors be the babyfaces. Even in a promotion run by TKO. Also, it must be noted that the "face bounty hunters vs the Royal Kangaroos" thing didn't exactly perform as hoped. Tom Peterson, for the unaware, sorta looks like JT Walsh in Pleasantville ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wymtdRWt19U ) only with a flattop. Here's a Tom Peterson commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVOCACUgfkQ also... would you be a bounty hunter for a guy who says "Free is a very good price"?

"Bounty on the heels" doesn't work because it puts the heels on the run. As an audience we tend to root for the rabbit....
odessasteps Posted August 1 Posted August 1 It could be a way to get one heel to turn babyface by going after the other heels.

I could see it working if you had a heel so run amuck that someone was at their witts end, kinda like when the whole RAW locker room would stand up to HHH. Audience would be excited to finally see him get his comeuppance 1
Cobra Commander Posted August 2 Posted August 2 (edited) as a result of the bounty talk, I also thought of a potentially too Russoriffic idea... two competing sides who put bounties on each other and then just decide to fight it out with all the bounty money on the line in the spirit of Hogan putting money into his own bounty in the "It's the Wall" promo Edited August 2 by Cobra Commander

just drew Posted August 3 Posted August 3 So, to continue the discussion from the July thread; Ive pondered this a good bit today. I’m not sure AEW should have as much trepidation signing anyone from this latest batch of releases, and I’ll tell you why. The first time all these guys became available, they were cut/asked for their release while Vince was still in charge. Rusev, Andrade, Keith Lee, Buddy Matthews, Swerve, Toni Storm, Dakota Kai, Tegan Nox. These folks were also all heavily featured in the “Ring of Hunter” era of nXt. I also believe Aleister Black was cut entirely to spite hhh. Most of these cuts were made either during Covid or after hhh was removed as head of developmental. I can imagine that for most of those performers, that question lingered in the back of their heads; “could I have made it in WWE if hhh were in charge?” Especially because again, a lot of these guys were hhh’s “go to” performers in nXt. It stands to reason that deep down, most of them wanted a shot to prove that Vince was the problem, not them. This time, these cuts were approved by hhh. The direct quote from SRS, who would know, was that “if hhh REALLY wanted them there, they’d still be there.” That’s an entirely different animal. The conversation of whether or not AEW needs to sign any of them is worth having, but I wouldn’t assume they’d all be pining to return to WWE this time around… 3
Cobra Commander Posted August 4 Posted August 4 probably along the lines of "sorry you had to work with me when I was really green" 2 1

I will note that while I am very strongly in the "stop signing everyone with a pulse WWE/AEW, you're good!" camp, thinking AEW needs to reconsider if they want to sign people WWE releases right away as some sort of purity "but do they really like me?" test when that would have necessitated passing on Swerve for a while kinda shows why it is not necessarily the best idea (Toni asked for her release so i don't think she'd count regardless). Ultimately talking to both the talent and people who know what they're like is a much better idea than any hard & fast rule. I also agree that there is not likely to be another/many significant WWE changes in leadership that may make people want to consider where they work. 1
odessasteps Posted August 4 Posted August 4 In theory, of those eight names, Two have become main events stars, so that’s probably a good success ratio. 1
Elsalvajeloco Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Reminder: Scott Putski managed to get multiple matches on WWF and WCW television during the height of the Monday Night Wars. It always could be worse. 2 5
AxB Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Swerve did work indies in between his WWE release and his AEW debut. Only for like a month, but that's because AEW really wanted him. But then, thee only reason he wasn't a day one AEW signing was the fact that he was already under WWE contract. 1

Cobra Commander Posted August 4 Posted August 4 seeing James Vandenberg in a mid-1997 Nitro episode and realizing that how he kinda looks like Scott Hudson and in the process of googling, I found there was an Iowa CFB QB about 10 years ago named James Vandenberg
