Cobra Commander Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 hey, after one visit to the Sprint Center, AEW is back to my suburban arena in October.. they've been there a few times over the years 1

WWE "hotshotting" one of the biggest matches they have to counter-program AEW speaks volumes. Booking for "moments" has never worked and will never work long term. Cena is retiring. Brock, who even knows. Roman is part time. WWE is probably way too big to ever "fail" financially at this point but I could easily see them headed back to the 2018-2019 era where attendance was way down and the shows were dreadfully boring. 2 1

This ain't WWF vs. JCP in 1987/1988 where one party is literally forcing the hands of other companies responsible for distribution. All this is just setting up is one show possibly being panned cause it was hastily thrown together and poorly built. I’ve seen speculation that this is more just to keep disgruntled WWE fans from deciding to check out what AEW is doing that has all the hype. But not sure this main event isn’t going to cause some of the disgruntled fans to be so disgusted that they just stop watching wrestling period. What AEW should do is make it a $25 PPV for one time only. 5
just drew Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 Does anyone know why AEW and MLW haven't done something together by now? They collaborate with the same companies. They share talent. Do we know if there's a personal issue between Court Bauer and Tony Khan?
username Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 MLW does not seem to use the same indie or indie-adjacent workers as AEW/ROH or TNA so I have wondered if there is something up there, probably not personal heat but some business specifics that prevent it. Then again they use the same CMLL folks as everyone else. My current working theory is that the people who can get TNA/ROH/local-talent-on-AEW work have options, and if you have options why would you work MLW? >_> 2
Ramo2653 Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 Didn't MLW have a habit of signing people to really long contracts that were hard to get out of? I remember that being an issue for Pillman Jr. and Hammerstone. I wonder if that's still the case.
porksweats Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 If AEW worked together with MLW, I'd simply stop watching AEW. 1 3
Niners Fan in CT Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 MJF just appeared on an MLW event a few weeks back. He was in a mask and attacked Mistico. Then he revealed himself and the crowd went crazy.
HarryArchieGus Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 Add to all that the (MLW Executive Producer) Paul Walter Hauser connection. I've always suspected AEW just doesn't want to get involved with such a consistently weak product.
RazorbladeKiss87 Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 I dip into MLW for the lucha guys but everything else is like TNA-lite. I can't even be bothered to watch THAT. 3
HarryArchieGus Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 I can't speak to the current roster so much, but talent has never been an issue with MLW. Court Bauer just seems to get the worst out of whomever he brings in. 2
RazorbladeKiss87 Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 When it first came back it was a really good show. Pushing L.A. Park was a plus in my book. Now it's "perfectly fine wrestling " which doesn't cut it these days. And Riddle is all over it. 1
HarryArchieGus Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 (edited) I watched a little MLW pre-AEW while trying to familiarize with all the new talent (after a near 15 year hiatus - me not them er both I guess). I found the shows frustrating to watch. So many botches and sloppy moments (and on a Taped show). So many bad promos. Lots of magic camera skits. I did kinda like the new Harts stable. I remember thinking Brian Pillman Jr. looked like a can't miss future star. MJF also stood out for his charisma and (hit/mostly miss) mic work, but was so clumsy in the ring. It seemed astonishing how far he'd come when he started to actually work matches in AEW. Yeah, it was neat seeing Park there. And Jacob Fatu even then was fully ready to be a big star attraction. Not a WWE viewer these days, but happy to see Fatu doing so well. Edited August 13, 2025 by HarryArchieGus 3
NoFistsJustFlips Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 I don't know if Id consider Lesner vs Cena as a hotshot. It feels like it should be happening at Clash in Paris but they shoe horned in a Logan Paul match to stretch it out so they could run it at the following PPV.

How many Cena and Lesnar appearances will there be?
NoFistsJustFlips Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 Not many Im sure. One? But you cant classify it as hot shotting because hot shotting implies doing something out of the norm to spike a specific metric at a specific time. And the lack of appearances is kind of the standard for Lesnar stuff. This is how they use him regardless if it's against AEW or not.

There was no scheduled PLE. Typically, the WWE schedule is known several months in advance. They book these arenas several months ahead of time and there's a local marketing campaign for when tickets go on sale which is also typically well before a 5-week turnaround. The PLE doesn't even have a name yet. The metrics they are trying to spike are all on social media during that weekend. 4

NoFistsJustFlips Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 So my mistake I didnt specify what I meant. The event its self is a hot shot, yes. We all agree on that. I meant specifically Lesnar vs Cena. I dont feel like that is being hot shotted because they're just using Lesnar how they always use him. And they arent rushing into the match compared to how a Lesnar story is usually booked. They're doing the opposite and stretching it longer than the most logical use to use him there. Goldberg vs Hogan was a hot shot. They threw that out there on a weeks notice. This they are slotting in a Logan Paul match before just to stretch for time.

Okay, but you yourself just defined hotshotting as "doing something out of the norm to spike a specific metric at a specific time". And now you say they've pushed the Lesnar-Cena match further out than they normally would - in other words, doing something out of the norm. And they're presumably doing so because they want to spike a specific metric at the specific time that All Out is being broadcast. So... When you gave your definition of hotshotting, did you mean to say "doing something faster than the norm..."? 1
NoFistsJustFlips Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 Yes. Faster than the norm. Rushing into something out of the ordinary. Like the Hogan Goldberg match I cited. I dont feel like stretching things out to time it for a specific future date is the same thing. (Sometimes when replying while at work I dont have the time to re-read before I post to see where I need to add context into my posts. Sorry about that.) But yeah. Them throwing a random show out on 5 weeks notice feels like hot shotting to me, in a way that stretching and waiting for the Lesnar Cena match to happen doesnt. Even tho its the same amount of time for the show happening and the match happening, their standard way to use Lesnar calls for the match to happen sooner than its happening. And that feels like the opposite of hot shotting to me. 1
The Green Meanie Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 Didn't MLW pick up a lot of folks from the Speaking Out Movement?

I'll probably go, but I'm not thrilled about getting the show(s) right before a ppv. You know the big names will be taking it easy, but there will probably be a couple undercard epics from people who didn't make the cut.

At least this gives WWE the opportunity to have a one-off show name that could capitalize on the history of a Cena/Lesnar rivalry. Kind of hearken back to the days when the In Your House names sometimes were connected to the storylines (IYH: Revenge of the 'Taker). I'm kind of surprised WWE hasn't dipped into the same tactic that boxing uses and called an event something like "WWE: CENA VS LESNAR". Something like that obviously would have more cultural cache than "WWE: the Bash" They've wrestled each other in 6 singles matches, with Lesnar winning 4 of them (a 2002 SmackDown, a 2003 SmackDown, Backlash '03, and SummerSlam '14) to Cena's 2 (Extreme Rules '12, Night of Champions '14) Edited August 13, 2025 by twiztor
Elsalvajeloco Posted August 13, 2025 Posted August 13, 2025 In the early years of his podcast, Schiavone had a story about a blowup he had with Court Bauer just cause he (Tony) dropped Curtis Hughes' name on commentary. He's a professional and dealt with worse going back to WCW, but I think we can probably count Schiavone out as far as working with MLW again. 1
