Nice Guy Eddie Posted August 11, 2025 Posted August 11, 2025 I love that Moxley vignette. It's so nice to see it again. I was so excited for Mox in New Japan. 4
username Posted August 11, 2025 Posted August 11, 2025 I mean let's be honest here: there's probably been a hundred different biker groups named the Death Riders, it's not like an out there name and it fits what most bikers would find cool to put on a jacket. 5
Curt McGirt Posted August 11, 2025 Posted August 11, 2025 Then those were all the ones that came up in my Google Image search aside from the only one I wanted to see -- go figure

Jinder Mahal never should have won the WWE Championship, the racist promos against Shinsuke Nakamura who never recovered losing to him at SummerSlam 2017 thanks to the stupid senile old man in charge. Thinking of the worst world champions ever: top tier are Mahal, The Great Khali, David Arquette, Vince McMahon, Vince Russo and Jeff Jarrett. Fair play to Arquette giving his pay to the families of Brian Pillman and Owen Hart if I remember rightly. Lest we forget EVIL? 1 1

Curt McGirt Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 (edited) If they are Montreal then maybe they never went away and just got a new patch? (One with a third eye in a pyramid haha) BTW this is all derived from watching Hell's Angels: Kingdom Come on Vice, highly recommended miniseries. There's another one that was done by A&E or somebody that's good too but not focused exclusively on Canada like this one. Edited August 12, 2025 by Curt McGirt 1
NoFistsJustFlips Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 So Cena vs Brock head to head against All Out, dick move. I guess there's not much AEW can do to retaliate. But at some point they have to do something. Book a story time with Janel Grant bay bay segment? Make a big show of donating to sex trafficking victims? Probably neither of those are good ideas. But I just hate to see them getting walked all over so consistently. 3
Technico Support Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 Oh shit. Counter programming via Fight for the Fallen or similar, but as a benefit for trafficking victims, victims of ICE, and any other cause that WWE is ostensibly for, would be amazing. Fuck it...announce on the air that all AEW wrestlers are now considered employees, with benefits, while you're at it, and ask why the competition is mistreating their people. TK would win the prestigious Hater of the Year award. 5

AEW is doing better since they stopped talking about WWE. They aren't getting walked over because it's become clear now that fans are still going to pay $50 for an AEW PPV if they want to see it bad enough. 'ALL IN' did one of their highest buy rates in their history and that was up against some shitty NXT show but also a SNME special that was on free TV that featured Goldberg's retirement match. It didn't make a dent. Will ESPN and the like be shouting out Lesnar and Cena all weekend? Yeah, probably. But that was going to happen anyway. 'ALL OUT' already has over 8,000 tickets sold in Toronto without a single match announced. The PLE might take some online hype away from AEW that weekend but that's about it. If you're AEW, you just keep delivering quality programming. 7 1
Elsalvajeloco Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 I feel like at this point you're going to watch an AEW PPV or you won't watch. This ain't WWF vs. JCP in 1987/1988 where one party is literally forcing the hands of other companies responsible for distribution. All this is just setting up is one show possibly being panned cause it was hastily thrown together and poorly built. 4

I say this a lot, but in terms of the general populace, folks who watch multiple promotions are the anomalies. People who just watch one promotion are by far the majority. It's like when WCW went out of business and people thought that the WWF would absorb their audience, but instead, they just went on to watch something else. The only thing this really does is sow confusion amongst casual audiences who don't follow that closely and just know that "hey, wrestling is in town". Now there's two wrestling shows and the one with the better ground game gets that casual market. How much of that market truly exists is up for analysts to debate, and I don't have the interest or the patience to explore that dataset. 3
NoFistsJustFlips Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 I agree with a lot of what's said. But there is a little bit of short sighted-ness here too. I agree with Niners, if you wanna buy an AEW ppv you're gonna buy it. You can always watch WWE later if you want. But a buy rate isnt the only thing affected by this strategy. In this day and age engagement and impressions on social media are very important to your bottom line. Its the kind of thing that can command you more money on licensing deals and action figure deals and video games and things beyond just buy rates, tv ratings, and ticket sales. So even if WWE doesnt affect the buy rate at all, they will suffocate social media. All the trending is gonna be based on the WWE ppv because they have a so much bigger foot print. Same as them suffocating all the streaming apps to give AEW (and others) no where to negotiate with. Its not a bomb thats gonna crater AEW. But what it is, is death by a thousand paper cuts. All of these incidents combined do affect AEW's bottom line. And their brand identity & reach. 1
Niners Fan in CT Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 AEW already has a pretty extensive action figure lineup. I get what you're saying about social media and brand awareness but people don't really know how much "trending" relates back to bottom lines yet. You look at the movie industry and many of the movies that trend when the trailers drop do not actually get people to the theaters. '28 Years Later' is a prime example of that. It was trending like crazy and then it had a disappointing opening and the legs weren't that great either. What AEW does well is translating viewers to PPV purchases. Nobody does it better than them right now. Also, it's one show. Let WWE waste Lesnar and Cena on a random PLE in September. Let them do it. Cena has less than ten appearances left. To me, it's a bigger risk for WWE because it's a good chance that the match is going to suck. Unless Lesnar is really bringing his working boots, I can see the online discourse being: "Lesnar and Cena sucks while AEW shines on PPV again" 2
AxB Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 I don't watch WWE, but the people I know who were raving about how great WWE was on the run-up to Mania have gone awfully quiet on the subject since. Suddenly a lot less enthused to watch the shows live, or in full on replay. Which does tend to imply that the quality has drooped significantly. But on twitter, a lot of WWE fans behave like bots. The shittiest show of the year could happen, and they'd be talking about how great it was. Plenty of pro-WWE posters echo chambered themselves into thinking that All In Texas was a bad show, with bad matches, that lost money. Which is the opposite of true (well, match quality is subjective, but you know what I mean). 2

Sure they have a toy line. What Im saying is for them to get a better deal, a bigger cut, when its time for their next deal those impressions count to businesses. Not totally related but UFC just made a 7.7 billion dollar payday. Do you think some of that gigantic price is based on the data of how often their events trend and the how many mentions the network gets and the like? Because I do. They're paying a premium for the content but also for the marketing and mobilization of social media word of mouth. Nothing trends like live sports One night means nothing. We agree on that. But its not one night. Its every AEW ppv now. The social impressions are siphoned off consistently. Their reach is diminished. Its not gonna put them out if business. But it does affect business metrics. Edited August 12, 2025 by NoFistsJustFlips

Nothing trends like live sports UFC might be a tougher comparison cause out of all of their events, maybe two or three tops a year trend heavily on social media. The rest only trend cause there isn't very much going on that day or something weird like people ogling Norma Dumont or Tabitha Ricci. Moreover, this latest deal has probably a lot to do with the recent merger that was approved (also doesn't hurt the new regime bowed down to Trump) and the UFC probably not getting as much overall interest from other players especially if Paramount can just "swoop" in and steal the rights. I think it's more likely Paramount, based on the asking price, was bidding against themselves.
porksweats Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 The WWE running an event the same day as All Out is the best they can do to save face and not lose more viewers to AEW. Nobody's going to pick the WWE event shoddily tossed together over AEW if they're already watching AEW but WWE viewers are finally at the point that they're expanding their horizons. 1
Go2Sleep Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 Cena/Lesnar in 2025 is like the exact same length into their careers as Hogan/Piper in 1997. If AEW can't compete against that, pack it in. 1

It's not really Cena/Lesnar that they are competing against, it's the Ariel's and Rosenberg's and Bill Simmons of the world who don't know much about anything to do with wrestling but have a lot of followers who praise WWE for basically existing... These people are the biggest marks on the internet because they do in hopes that the wrestlers will think they're cool. 1
