hammerva Posted July 24 Posted July 24 (edited) I know if it early but there is going to be a huge parking lot brawl between Bully Ray, the Nasty Boys, and Brutus Beefcake on who gets to enter the funeral home first when it is decided I can't wait for the Lance Storm RIP tweet on this. Given his passive aggressiveness toward people who actually like in this case, this will be a good one Edited July 24 by hammerva

I was not a hulkamaniac at all if anything hogan delayed my wrestling fandom because my first exposure to any of it was the rock n wrestling cartoon and I thought Hogan was lame as heck and always did, my friends being big Ultimate Warrior fans is what eventually brought me to wrestling around shortly after WM7. Bret and Hennig solidified my fandom at summer slam.

supremebve Posted July 24 Posted July 24 I know I was watching wrestling before the Mega Powers, but that's the angle that hooked me. I was firmly on the side of The Macho Man. I still can't believe people cheered for a man who tried to steal his best friend's girl while leaving him to get his ass kicked by two dudes. 3
RIPPA Posted July 24 Posted July 24 I was always under the impression that the general consensus for best WWE "Hulkamania" match was the cage match against Bossman 3
Cobra Commander Posted July 24 Posted July 24 quite a bit of the "this person had a complex legacy" stuff is very watered down, but yeah with Hogan, there's probably no shortage of "he got his friends jobs" stories but also that didn't always happen for one reason or another (not to blame Hogan for taking years to get Horace a job).. and there were stories of Hogan being good to Mark Curtis when Mark/Brian was going through cancer while with WCW, but i'm sure stories on the other side of that coin exist too... also the racism looking at the Findagrave entry for Hogan's older brother who died at 38 in 1986 ( https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/85851718/allan-peter-bollea ) and predictably there's three different Hulk Hogan entries on that site which will be consolidated quickly into one entry (I thought about trying to shorten Findagrave before deciding one abbreviation is FG and the other choice with 3 letters is a baaaaad idea to use). There's probably a bit of the Hogan story that is voluntarily untold because Hulk doesn't want to talk about it... to be overoptimistic, maybe some of the untold stories of Hogan don't make him look bad (some will)

I always had the theory Hogan never wanted Elizabeth. He wanted the belt, and knew he could drive Randy into a jealous rage by just being a little shady around her. 1

In 1984 I was like six, and I remember first hearing of Hulk Hogan from things like cartoons and toys and such, since he was truly crossing over into the mainstream unlike anyone else in wrestling had since Georgeous George. But I was first introduced to wrestling around that time when I flipped over to WTBS to watch a Reds/Braves game, and wrestling was on. I saw Tully Blanchard beat a guy in like five seconds and then go over and cut a promo. From that point on I was a Horseman mark. 2

If you and your best friend are fighting two big ass dudes, and you leave him to get his ass kicked to steal his girl, you are a terrible friend. 2
SirFozzie Posted July 24 Posted July 24 And while I'm mourning, there's a little bit of the rascal in me, that wants someone to post a cartoon with the Hulkster at the pearly gates, only with St Peter saying "That doesn't work for me brother..." 6

I just saw that one, and it's definitely evidence for the argument of "Hogan was not as bad as people say he might have been". However, he is also working with a deceptively young guy especially for that time in wrestling where 95% of the top guys are older than 30 (ironically much like now) and also capable and athletic. Best match for Hogan is sort of a tough question cause most of his stuff from his prime are clearly cases of you had to be there to properly judge and viewed through a certain lens. You also have to be in the proper frame of mind of wanting to view 1980s/early 90s wrestling. If you are constantly inundated with more modern wrestling and have with the context of Terry Bollea (the human being), yeah, it might be a bit tough to rate some of his matches when 50% of the process requires you to have a nostalgic fondness for the Hulk Hogan character.

Rip Hulkster Yeah, it’s gross but not unexpected. lol, it’s early in the day. Check back later. The comments will probably be even more disgusting. I’m not a Hogan fan but I didn’t know him so I don’t think it’s fair to judge him based on a few stories that are admittedly tough to defend. People change, stories in the press get exaggerated, no one is all bad or all good. etc. Even if I was feeling judgmental, I think most everyone deserves respect when they die. It’s not going to cost me anything to behave with some class and keep my personal dislikes to myself. Apparently, that”s asking too much of this group. RiP Hogan. You entertained a lot of people and inspired a lot of kids. 1 1
Curt McGirt Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Hey, this is something cool to think of. Ozzy knew he was gonna die so played a final concert where he gave $190 million dollars of the proceeds to children's charity. I like having known someone who died, who was a childhood idol, did something like that. 7 1
Nice Guy Eddie Posted July 24 Posted July 24 I can't say I was ever a Hulkamaniac. My earliest favorites when I was young were Demolition and Jake "The Snake" Roberts. I guess I did have to root for Hogan at the 1989 Survior Series since he was teaming with my favorites. Otherwise, I was always neutral towards Hogan. I didn't love him, but I didn't hate him either until later on when I would learn about his backstage power in WCW. 1
Cobra Commander Posted July 24 Posted July 24 I started regularly watching wrestling late in 1997 but I had obviously heard of Hogan before then, so i'm at a different angle than others here

Lawful Metal Posted July 24 Posted July 24 I really really really liked his match with the Rock at Wrestlemania. Should've been his retirement match. 6

Boydy Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Him, Ultimate Warrior and Macho Man were the reasons I first got into wrestling as a kid. Larger then life characters who unfortunately in real life were very flawed. It is a shame that we can't really celebrate Hogan's career cos of his stupid mistakes he made in his personal life. Without Hogan the wrestling business would of probably took longer to get as popular as it is did or it might have never got as popular. 1

Given how awful and nonsensical the NWO revival was, how Rock just absolutely verbally dissected Hall and Nash when they came in (HEY CHICO! get me every goddamn time), and limitations of even early 00s Hulk Hogan, the fact the match was that good and the atmosphere was that insane is a testament that you cannot leave Dwayne Johnson off the pro wrestling Mount Rushmore no matter what you think of Dwayne now. His promos in the lead up were STELLAR. 1
Nice Guy Eddie Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Despite Hogan winning, my favorite match of his might be WM5 against Savage.
Eivion Posted July 24 Posted July 24 (edited) Not sure how I feel about this news. His death is certainly not something I celebrate as there are far worse human beings out there in the world. I'm also not super sad despite having been a fan for years due to what he showed himself as numerous times. Frankly despite Hogan meaning more to me Ozzy's and Malcolm-Jamal Warner's deaths hit me harder. Still, I'm somewhat disappointed as a part of me always hopes someone eventually grows, becomes better, and makes amends so its a shame however unlikely it was to happen its no longer an option. As for Hogan's best match I think its probably down between the good cage match with Bossman, vs. Stan Hansen in Japan, or the WM 18 match with the Rock. I probably lean towards the Rock match because that felt like a magical moment between generations. Its honestly ridiculous they managed it and spoke well to both men's talents. keith_h Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Best match I would go Hulk Hogan vs. Stan Hansen – AJPW/NJPW/WWE Wrestling Summit 4/13/90 1
