Dolfan in NYC Posted July 16 Posted July 16 On a long and lonesome highway, east of Omaha, you can listen to the engine moanin' out his one note song. You can think about the woman or the girl you knew the night before... You know, sometimes these threads can be hard to write, especially on inconsequential weeks where nothing really happens... I mean, I can't even see how they filled that video! Good job on the editors! But your thoughts will soon be wanderin' the way they always do, when you're ridin' sixteen hours and there's nothin' there to do, and you don't feel much like ridin', you just wish the trip was through... I kid of course. The biggest show of the year for AEW delivered in spades! And diamonds, clubs, and hearts! As you needed everything in the stadium to finally end the Mox Reign of Terror! And the end of several other big streaks and factions as well! (Poor Christian... at last he's on his own. ) At the end, we were all Swerve: That said, I never want to see Swerve smiling again. Here I am on the road again... There I am on the stage... Here I go playin' star again... There I go, turn the page. As we now enter AEW's Era of Good Feelings, let's see what's on tap for today as we begin to look at a certain door again. One they said was forbidden... With MJF winning Money in the Bank or whatever AEW calls their briefcase, I'm sure his goofy ass will show up to. But, the page has been turned... (Note - arguing the Metallica version is superior is a bannable offense.) Enjoy the week! 1 2 1

Go2Sleep Posted July 16 Posted July 16 Very interesting trios match that's suspiciously quick after Hangman's big win. Feels like there has to be a big story pivot coming with Hanger, Mox, or both. 1

When I mentioned (over in the AEW News thread) how the announcers never specified when the casino gauntlet winners would get their title shots, the thought did occur to me that it might because they were going to handle them MitB-style. But I didn't mention that, because I didn't want to put such a horrible thought out into the universe. So, you know. Thanks, Dolfan. 1 1 1
dorfus malorfus Posted July 16 Posted July 16 (edited) I think they learned their lesson with Christian last year that the MitB stip just likely ends up painting them into a corner. Probably more likely that this will be like MJF's (confusing) giant poker chip from 2022 where it's sort of treated like MitB until he just decides to "cash in" by challenging Page to a match at a ppv. Oh man, Against the Wind came on a little while ago and I got the feels. BTW, I always thought the lyric was "you can think about your woman, or the girl you knew the night before" (as opposed to "the" woman), which works better vis a vis the rock n roll lifestyle the song is about, in my humble opinion and no diss to Mr. Seger. 2

"Cashing in" to essentially steal a title is one of the worst booking cliches WWE has shat upon wrestling and that's saying a lot. It's lame and just feeds this low IQ, short attention span, moment culture that's risen in wrestling fandom. The only good cash-in was the first one, because Edge had the briefcase so long it was almost forgotten about, and stealing the belt from a beaten champion he could never beat on his own was perfectly in line with his character. Now a heel cashes in and steals the belt from a beloved babyface and these Pavlovian dogs cheer just because they're seeing a title change in their town and they can put it on socials and buy a "I was there!" shirt. Jesus Christ, WWE fans today would cheer Koloff beating Bruno because at least iTs A mOmEnT! 1 1 2

When I was in college there was this townie (a term that I eventually embodied so I feel okay using it) named Steve who delivered pizza on his bike because he wasn't allowed to drive. He also loved karaoke as much as I did, meaning I saw him 5 nights a week. He always sang "Turn The Page" and I hated it. At the one bar the dj would play the saxophone lines! (He also did this when another townie, Bruce, sang "All Night Long" which actually ruled) One n8ght we hit two karaoke bars and he was singing the original at one and the fucking Metallica cover at the other. I've never been more mad at karaoke. 4
HarryArchieGus Posted July 16 Posted July 16 Great to see all the Seger love. 'Still the Same' in the right setting fucking murders me. 'Ramblin' Man' was an excellent addition to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. That early Seger System is fantastic, but so is much of his catalog. And let's not forget 'Her Strut' and the 'Woman' who used it oh so well. RIP 'the Greatest' Nancy Sullivan. 1

But that's exactly like Money in the Bank, isn't it? Maybe they've changed the rules since I stopped watching WWE, but the original concept is that the briefcase holder gets to pick the time and place their title match takes place. Edge, the first such holder, realized that picking the time and place could mean "Right here, right now, after the champ has just gone through a gruelling match", and most subsequent holders have followed his lead - but not all. Some did essentially what MJF did with the poker chip.

Even when I was in my Metallica>All phase in high school I knew their cover couldn't come close to Seger. They had some fun covers on Garage, Inc though and it made me aware of stuff like "Ami I Evil?" which is great shit (the original, I mean but again fun cover) Kind of odd they'd do the six-man unless they immediately establish different paths going forward. I don't want to see Mox aiming for a rematch at least anytime soon so I'll be curious to see what they do. 1

Hmm I actually don't know anything about MitB aside from the famous Edge and Ziggler cash ins so i didn't realize it wasn't necessarily a "right here, right now" prize that awarded opportunism and cowardice. In that case, yeah I guess the poker chip really wasn't any different. In any event, I hope it just means MJF and Athena are next in line for title shots and won't be carrying around the clipboards all year. I think the only title shot annual gimmick I hate more is the G1 winner getting to randomly decide if he wants a title shot in a couple of weeks or if he wants to wait for the Dome. 1
RazorbladeKiss87 Posted July 16 Posted July 16 Six man will have to get Darby involved, I would think. I used to hate Seger. I'm still not a fan but this close to Detroit you have guys my dad's age who just love the guy. Had to rebel as a shithead teen. Now, I kinda like "Turn The Page" but the single that really does it is "Night Moves." 3
dorfus malorfus Posted July 16 Posted July 16 "Main Street" is the Seger tune that always kills me. Best use of Seger was the climactic sequence in Ralph Bakshi's American Pop. My guess is the Death Riders six man is mostly going to just be a clean win for Team AEW so that Claudio and Wheeler can look down at Moxley afterwards like "hanging out with you isn't fun anymore, man" and disappear for awhile so that they can return retconned to a certain extent. Although Wheeler's future is closely tied with Moxley at this point maybe he'll stick around and just Claudio and Shafir will disappear for a bit. However it shakes out, i don't see them remaining together as a faction for more than a couple weeks post-blowoff. 1
Zimbra Posted July 16 Posted July 16 I thought Seger was just unspeakably corny until I hit age 35 and then a switch flipped in my head and I realized he ruled. Many such cases in the midwest. I was figuring on a quick pivot to MJF/Hanger so I'm curious where they're going with this 6-man. 3
DreamBroken Posted July 16 Posted July 16 I was assuming the trios could be continuing a road to Blood and Guts, if they are doing that this year. Not much of an answer but Tony was asked if the Casino was cash in anywhere style or not at the media scrum. He said he will be giving more clarity to it on TV and acknowledged that it was treated differently at different times. Tony said he would check with the winners, the champions, and put some thought in to when to make those announcements but he thinks MJF and Athena "earned some say as to when they cash those in." 1

Mostly because it's so ridiculous to use the word "Accompany" (even more so, "Accomp'ny"!) in a rock song about your lady, but I love it. 2

COLETTI Posted July 16 Posted July 16 One of these days I want an underdog to win one of Tony's big purse matches and then show up the next week in a brand new suit acting like they're rich, keep going for a few weeks with new car and stuff. Max Caster maybe? 4

I'd be fine if they all just went their separate ways as that was clearly the climax but at the very least having them both wrestle after such a brutal match, hell have the match announced just a few days after is just... a bit lame? At the least give Page a bit of time to appreciate the win, let the Death Riders lick their wounds for a few weeks, hell don't have an announced match and have them just jump Page, all that would feel a bit better.
Technico Support Posted July 16 Posted July 16 You fuckers are going to make me dial up “Bob Seger Essentials” on Apple Music next time I go for a run, aren’t you? 5 miles in, sweating my ass off to Hollywood Nights, blaming all of you. 1
