The current administration has gone out of their way to make the World Cup as soulless, joyless and cruel as possible. This is like night and day from 1994, which featured a Democrat administration but coincidentally also benefitted from a deep Knicks playoff run plus the Rangers winning Lord Stanley's Cup for the first time since FDR was President. NYC was filled with life and joy, and the sound of soccer/footy coming from every bar, restaurant and barber shop you passed. This year that level of passion will come despite the efforts of our President, not because of it.

And yet.

I was at lunch just now in FiDi and passed... a Scotsman. You folks can use your imagination as to what he looked like - the Scotland jersey is the only exhibit I need to enter. It's guys like this who make the bullshit of this administration worthwhile.

The kick-off times makes it relatively easy for us Europeans to boycott this event without getting tempted. There is zero chance that I will get up at 4 AM (CEST) to watch Austria - Algeria and I definitely won't waste an early morning and watch Austria - Jordan at 6 AM. The only danger is the Austria - Argentina game that starts at 7 PM CEST.

Speaking about the Austrian team, all excitement I had left died last week when the only serious striker we have in our team got injured warming up for the last friendly. Now we have got an okay defence, a barely okay, too short, goalkeeper, and harmless (at that level) forwards. The only position I am confident in is the midfield. I assume we will make it out of the group stage (I would say chances are 2/3 or so), but the journey will definitely be over in the round of 32 (checking the brackets, the only chance to reach the round of 16 will be if we place third and get a group winner of one of the less heavy groups like B or D; if Austria places second, we will play against the winner of group H, i.e. likely Spain and this would definitely be the end).

I found it weird and funny that teams are going to these college football stadiums like Jordan Hare at Auburn and just mesmerized.  I guess it comes more to how few "modern" facilities they have no matter how big the sport is.   And I am not sure that places like Auburn and Texas A&M would be considered "modern" for us.

They're mostly blown away by the size of the stadiums for friggin' college sports. 100k selling out a stadium for a couple of universities playing soccer (for example) is the real thing that the un-American mind can't comprehend.
