Cobra Commander Posted March 14 Posted March 14 ROH and New Evolve are basically the CW and MyNetworkTV affiliates in the local market that are owned by the local NBC and CBS affiliates 1
The Green Meanie Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Something I thought about the other day, the "It's still real to me, dammit!" guy..what was your take on that situation when it happened? Were you proud or embarrassed to be a wrestling fan?
Jenalysis Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Neither. It was just a passionate fan, and I was happy for everyone involved. I've seen this with my wife- who is a very new wrestling fan (we each took a hobby from his other- she got wrestling, I got Night Lords!), and the Toni/Mariah/Mina stuff means a lot to her, and I was glad I was able to take her somewhere to meet Toni and Mina before we flee America in the next several months (hopefully). 6

I'd rather people be passionate about things and enjoy them rather than passionate about them and jerks, and that guy was the former, so he's fine. 10

I was still active in the business when that happened, and my thoughts were that I wish more people were like that and still "believed". Everyone knows it is all a work, but wrestling is better when everyone quits trying to be "smarter" than everyone else, and just enjoys it for what it is. It's OK to just be a "mark". 6
The Natural Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 (edited) Five years ago, WrestleMania XXXVI was the first two night WrestleMania we've had ever since. That got me thinking, if each was on one night like it used to be, which match would go on last? WrestleMania XXXVI. The Undertaker vs. AJ Styles. WrestleMania XXXVII: Bianca Belair vs. Sasha Banks. Two African American women headlining is bigger than a world title match in Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Edge. WrestleMania XXXVIII: Steve Austin vs. Kevin Owens. Steve Austin's first match in 19 years is bigger than the two world titles unified in Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar laughingly billed as the "biggest WrestleMania match of all time". Actual quote. WrestleMania XXXIX: Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes. WrestleMania XL: Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes II. Edited March 15 by The Natural 1

How ever "still real to me damn it kinda became a meme, before memes where a thing 47 minutes ago, SovietShooter said: I was still active in the business when that happened, and my thoughts were that I wish more people were like that and still "believed". Niners Fan in CT Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Mercedes Mone vs. Indi Hartwell at the House of Glory show in NYC tonight. Indi is another person who has been training with her lately, I'd expect it to be solid. Event is free on Triller+ they usually have a 7-day free trial. Private Party is also on the card. 2
BloodyChamp Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Yep it was a protomeme. The smarts were hard on him at the time but the joke’s on them. Many smarts at the time were just people who had never felt the inside of a wrestling ring. Now they all miss dudes like that.
Cobra Commander Posted March 16 Posted March 16 for as awesome as Buddy Landel's elbowdrop was... the replay from 11/9/85 WCW showing him just dropping his back on the guy while going for the elbow was pretty neat too. Pretty neat accidental senton-ish move 1

The way people in wrestling reacted to what said Damara Lewis' out of context at the AEW PPV last week showed me that fans want to believe. On one hand I like the "state of the business " aspect of the post media pressers or scrums but on the other hand it sucks to watch them break the forth wall right after a PPV. It's more important now more than ever for WWE as much as AEW had gotten criticism for trying to be over with the internet wrestling fans. I said the other day that The Rock is the biggest star in the world but it bothers him when he gets criticism from a small section of fans that don't have any effect on his box office. He is so easy gotten to. It's sorta cute in a way because it means wrestling still means alot to him. He's so great as a heel but it took me out of it hearing him explaining the inner workings of Cena's heel turn right after it happened. It's like he had to go out his way to explain himself and diffuser any possible criticism then on the same presser you had Cena come out and 100% commit to his heel turn. You really get that sense with Triple H doing those pressers that it's more about getting himself over with the internet and the Journalists than anything else. You hear stories of how Hunter hated Tough Enough and breaking of kayfabe during the Ruthless Aggression era but now he's open about breaking kayfabe and using karny terms like is common knowledge
odessasteps Posted March 16 Posted March 16 You cant put the kayfabe genie back in the bottle vompletely, but it would be nice to break it inside the diegesis of the show itself, like what happened last week .
Niners Fan in CT Posted March 16 Posted March 16 A very solid match between Mercedes and Indi Hartwell. Great crowd reactions in NYC. Mercedes had Amazing Red tribute gear. The opening match between Zilla Fatu and Dijak was pretty good as well. I assume Zilla will end up in WWE. AEW should really take a look at Dijak in my view.
Brandon-E Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Chris Jericho hated working with Chyna but I can't remember if Chyna ever botched a move on him.

It was more to do with her complaining about him being too stiff. Him being new to WWF and his main ally Vince Russo who advocated for him to be hired in the first place recently leaving. I can understand why he didn’t like working with Chyna. Although she was one of the most over talents on the roster, he probably saw that as punishment or a test to humble him to see if he would put her over with no problem. It probably was a humble job knowing how WWF was back then. Once they moved on from that, conveniently Jericho got pushed as a sold upper mid card babyface. Those first few months after that epic debut was really rough

odessasteps Posted March 16 Posted March 16 And then Jericho gave her a black eye, which did not endear him to Vince or Hunter.

I don't know what Dijak was saying, but Kenny responded on his twitch stream by referring to him as "Donovan Dickhead" and talking about what a sycophant he was to Triple H. 1

Those first few months after that epic debut was really rough That story Jericho told in his book about how they told him to work her like any other opponent and he caught her with a shot and asked how she was and she said fine, then immediately went to Triple H to complain about it leading to a meeting with Vince culminating in Vince shouting something along the lines of "How could you? She's a WOMAN!" read like some bizarro episode of The Office. It's actually amazing Jericho came out of WWE as well as he did when you read all the stuff that went on that first half a year or so, from DX doing a promo where they pointed at a homeless guy and said he was "probably a better worker than Jericho" on TV even though they weren't in any sort of feud at the time to Vince comparing Jericho's wrestling to that of King Kong Bundy (Bundy's stuff looked like shit and really hurt). 1

I have been that guy, getting worked up and goofy trying to tell a creator how much their stuff has meant to me at a con, it just wasn't on video. I didn't feel like it reflected on wrestling fandom at all. Edited to add: i think part of why that was so incredibly viral was that (a) YouTube was brand new and (b) a lot of people had never heard of a wrestling convention, including wrestling fans, and the idea that wrestling was not so different from Star Trek or Doctor Who made people who operated in one (whether business or fandom) but not the other deeply uncomfortable. Edited March 16 by Cliff Hanger Added a second thought. 1
odessasteps Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Didn’t it also picked up on the nightly talk shows, like Kimmel. If Simmons and Sal were on the writing team, you can see them wanting to use it.
