Cobra Commander Posted March 9, 2025 Posted March 9, 2025 Bobby Heenan calling Jim Duggan "doo-gan" to make fun of him makes me wonder how Bobby working in a Bill Watts promotion would have worked out also love that their prematch hype for Arn Anderson at Uncensored 95 just involved showing one of his really awesome promos They actually aired the promo a few more times in 1995: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9Xl-NDP87w 1

Cobra Commander Posted March 10, 2025 Posted March 10, 2025 I could see Bobby, who got at least one Chicago fan to try firing a gun at him, really angering the good people of Louisiana but he would also be able to bump a lot if he didn't get stabbed first 1

Cliff Hanger Posted March 10, 2025 Posted March 10, 2025 I saw someone use "slapnuts" as an insult on Bluesky today and I felt a billion years old. I have literally never heard anyone but Jeff Jarrett say that and he hasn't in like 20 years. 2

No one had said that Iceman Parsons in Dallas. Of course then Stevie started saying so much it lost all it's charm James
FourPostMassacre Posted March 10, 2025 Posted March 10, 2025 Wasn’t it Fruit Booties? The dictation was half the joke if memory serves.
Cobra Commander Posted March 10, 2025 Posted March 10, 2025 seeing the name Beau Dozier in the recent obits (he was a songwriter, producer, and son of Lamont Dozier) and thinking "Beau Dozier" sounds like it could be a good wrestling gimmick name
caley Posted March 10, 2025 Posted March 10, 2025 (edited) Recently I've watched the first 8-9 Royal Rumbles and now I'm watching the first Nitro and a question struck me: Who is a better wrestling play-by-play guy: Eric Bschoff or Vince McMahon? Bischoff is dreadful as a play-by-play guy, yelling as loud as he can to try to get over how close a fall is but seemingly unable to call almost any move by name unless it's martial arts-based. But he might be better than Vince whose over-reliance on "1...2...it's over...no it isn't" or "1...2...and he wins it...no he doesn't" is pretty much the worst thing ever. Now when they both become wrestler characters, Vince leaves Bischoff in the dust as evil owner vs evil president. But straight play-by-play, I MIGHT lean Bischoff. Edited March 10, 2025 by caley
SirSmUgly Posted March 10, 2025 Posted March 10, 2025 Vince is far better at PBP, IMO. Better voice for it, and his theatrical nonsense just works in the environment that he's in. THAT'S GOTTA BE--THAT'S GOTTA BE KANE at the first HiaC is an iconic call, IMO, for example. Bischoff doesn't have anything half as memorable as that on commentary. I actually don't mind "1, 2, HE GOT 'IM--no, he didn't" because as someone who "watched" a ton of PPVs on scramblevision in the mid '90s, it worked for me to sell false finishes that I couldn't see. 3
odessasteps Posted March 10, 2025 Posted March 10, 2025 if people haven’t, go back and listen to 70s Vince where he was trying to announce like Howard Cosell.
Stefanie Sassypants Posted March 10, 2025 Posted March 10, 2025 Vince pre-expansion was actually pretty good. Vince when he was running the show pretty steadily went downhill. Bischoff was okay. His insistence on using martial arts terminology (see the "back leg round kick"), while technically correct within his knowledge base, just made things clunky because using four words to describe one action when one will do is silly. (And let's face it, the average viewer isn't going to care if a kick is actually a back leg round kick.) He wasn't as good as Schiavone and probably shouldn't have been the head announcer for Nitro for the first year, but he wasn't too bad. If it's 1995 Vince vs 1995 Bischoff... Bischoff probably gets the edge, but just barely. 1
Curt McGirt Posted March 11, 2025 Posted March 11, 2025 "Back leg round kick" is a real term? That doesn't sound like a real term.

It's a taekwondo term IIRC and that's what Bischoff's black belt is in. He'd also call a back leg side kick when "push kick" would've sufficed.
odessasteps Posted March 11, 2025 Posted March 11, 2025 Bischoff probably never got to call a WCW match with Sweet Stan and his educated feet.

My daughter is in karate classes and every time they do back leg round kicks or front leg side kicks, I think of Bischoff. 2 minutes ago, odessasteps said: Bischoff probably never got to call a WCW match with Sweet Stan and his educated feet. He threw three distinctively different kicks, and JR called every one a savate kick! Was Lane actually a karate instructor at one point in his life, or was that more JR puffery a la Stan Hansen’s Baltimore Colts stint?
