This month sees Australia Grand Slam. Mariah May vs. Timeless Toni Storm for the AEW Women's World Championship should headline and go on last. One of the best AEW stories ever.

In the weekly thread @Curt McGirt said he'd have this framed with his monsters of film  collection:

I misread it and thought he said "Tom of Finland", which, you know, cool... but I don't think this really fits with Tom's style.

Anyway, My Bloody Toni tonight!

No, FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND. Like these:

Spoiler

Angus Scrimm Lands The Cover Of Famous Monsters Of Filmland Magazine! — PHANTASM.com

Famous Monsters of Filmland / Issue #93 | Sold Details | Four Color Comics

Famous Monsters of Filmland: #62, Feb. – Eborn Books

FAMOUS MONSTERS of Filmland 1973 #99

They all had these beautiful cover paintings done by Basil Gogos and were technically the first fanzine -- or pre-fanzine, as Castle of Frankenstein was the first REAL genre fanzine IIRC, since Famous Monsters was sold at the store instead of done as an indie. The editor, Forrest J. Ackerman, was a superfan of sci-fi and horror since he first saw King Kong and collected all kinds of memorabilia in his "Ackermansion" for decades. I don't know what happened since his years-ago passing but there were millions of dollars of artifacts in that place. Bless him, he was the first real genre nerd, and a sweet and kindly man to boot. We owe him a debt of gratitude for paving our way.

Insofar as Tom of Finland, I'm also a fan, but yeah I don't think Toni fits the profile.

Free gimmick idea for the next Big Gay Brunch: Timeless Tom of Finland,

The Beast Mortos is coming back this week, that's neat.

For those that don't know, Ackerman wrote for a sci fi zine in the 1930s edited by Siegel and Shuster before Action Comics 1.

I just suddenly realised why the ending to Okada/Ishii damn near killed AEW for me.

With the Royal Rumble tomorrow, I was chatting with some wrestling buddies about stuff like how something like 30 of the 38 (There were co-winners one year) Men's Rumble winners so far were disappointing to us personally but the Rumble is usually worth watching anyway for the stuff that goes on before the finish...

And, there was a general consensus among us that the last time any of us REALLY marked out for the Rumble was when Shinsuke and Asuka both won... But how the way WWE followed up on that essentially killed the company for most of us.

Friend-of-a-friend Satoshi actually travelled to Mania that year (2018? I think 2018 sounds right) specifically for Styles/Shinsuke. Imagine how disappointing that was!

ANYway... THAT'S why Okada vs Ishii killed me. It subliminally reminded me of AJ/Shinsuke.

Two guys who proved they could work an all-timer together in New Japan being given a match in America and having it end with a nut shot.

Chances of me watching the Rumble while chatting with my buddies online: About 90%

of me sleeping in and missing some of it: About 60%

of me skipping Collision: 99.5%

of me at least watching Collision highlights on YT: 50/50. Depends on what people post about it on here.

of me making an "If AEW means All Ex WWE, then I guess WWE stands for We Were Elite" joke if Cody wins again or if Punk wins: I more or less just did.

of me generally enjoying the Rumble matches themselves: Probably pretty good.

of me therefore getting back into WWE and becoming a member of the WWE Universe: Less than zero.

of me eventually getting back into AEW: Pretty likely

Yes, Royal Rumble 2018 was when Shinsuke Nakamura and Asuka win the Royal Rumble match and both stupidly lost to AJ Styles and Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania XXXIV. That was a bad WrestleMania with an awful Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns main event. Noticed your name change too, buddy.

Two bad optic looks for AEW today. The big one, which those in WWE and others have been sending us, is a promotion by TOPPS regarding AJ & Big Justice promoting a baseball Topps  Chrome Update series and AJ on his shoulder has a replica WWE title belt. That blows my mind.

The other is Saraya doing a TMZ interview saying her AEW deal is up in September and would not rule out a return to WWE, saying she loves WWE and appreciates everyone there, they made me.  She did say she loves her time in AEW. That is what it is but can you imagine a WWE performer whose deal is up at the end of the year saying the equivalent?  That’s not as bad as the first one.

D'oh. Especially the first one.

The Big Boom AJ title belt fuck up raises a good question: what are the most counterproductive celebrity "endorsements" in wrestling history? I remember when WXO or whatever Jimmy Hart's fed was called had Hacksaw Duggan interview Willie Nelson to show Willie's enthusiasm for this exciting new company and poor Willie clearly had no clue what he was talking about and kept mentioning how happy he was for"Hulk and all the other guys" even though Hogan wasn't with the company (then they ran the interview on their tv anyway).

The Styles/Nakamura debacle can't entirely be blamed on how shitty WWE was at that time since it was a 20 minute zero star match between two all-timers on the biggest show of the year and the nutshot happened in the post-match. Okada and Ishii were given no time and presumably they didn't come up with that finish themselves.

In the Raw celebrity host period, was it Jeremy Piven that called Summerslam, Summerfest?

Also, teenager LaMelo Ball dropping N bombs on a live Raw broadcast.

Snoop appearing in AEW and then doing an interview that he'd rather do more stuff with WWE but they wouldn't let him get physical in the ring. Snoop of course ended up doing more WWE stuff after that like doing an audible with Miz at after Shane blew out his knee.

Oh no, they’re gonna have to cut the Costco twits loose, whatever will AEW do without them??
Harley Cameron’s interactions with them is their highlight.

As long as they find a way to keep that panther dressed in black, The Rizzler. That's where the money is.

I do believe Saraya and her guy broke up? I feel like that was mentioned in my news feed recently.

Honestly, a poster of Toni like that would probably sell well.

The Rizzler

Spoiler

May include: A dark green cartoon character with large green eyes, standing in front of a city skyline with a sunset in the background. The character is wearing a black hat and has a large, dark cloud-like body. The text 'WHO IS THE DRIZZLE' is written in large orange letters below the character.

Couldn't find a smaller one.

Anyway, if you get that joke, you are of a very specific age and pop culture interest

Boy, what a nothing signing she's been. Idk if her health has been poor again or what, but other than Paige Van Zant there might not have been an AEW women's signing with less ROI.

But then, that's true of almost anyone on the roster who's interacted with Harley.

It was noted that Wednesday’s Dynamite show, which airs on Friday night in the U.K. on ITV4, had the highest first-night audience in the history of the show. The number was 190,000 but that doesn’t include people watching after whenever the show aired and the final number in the U.K. doesn’t come out for more than a week as they include DVR numbers in their ratings. I’ve heard people say it had a beneficial lead-in from darts like the big Collision number a few weeks ago after the college football playoff game had, but AEW has been doing strong numbers all month.

That chain... that fucking chain...

I mean, I'd be fine if it was an OG dookie rope, but that looks like Julian from Trailer Park Boys' chain only they hit it with an enlargement ray from Futurama.

I'm down for Saraya going back to WWE as long as HHH makes her break up with her human cockroach of a boyfriend (husband?) like he kept her away from Del Rio.

If you mean Ronnie Radkie (sp?) they publicly broke up weeks back.

I believe Ishii legit got hurt early in the match and that's why it was underwhelming/went home early. It wasn't on AEW, it was just an unfortunate case of (in the immortal words of Rampage Jackson) "Shit Happens and shit".

Good to know!

Well, not good to know that the Stone Pitbull is hurt... but certainly it makes me feel better if a short crappy let-down of a match with a lame finish wasn't the original plan.

I'm still gonna take a little break from AEW, though.

While I am here: I heard a rumour that The Righteous... want to... Alongside Elias, Wander.
