Dave just never has time for hypothetical questions.

The best moment was a week or two ago when discussing the WWE network & Bryan was trying to make a point using math so he decided to round a number they had pegged at 21% up to 25% just to make the math easier. Dave was having none of it. Every time Bryan would say "25%" Dave would say "21%". It happened at least 4 times in a row before an exasperated Bryan just gave up.

Somebody, somewhere on some board made mention that they thought Dave had some form of Asperger's, and everybody (including myself) thought it was the dumbest comment to make, but that one exchange definitely made me think something was off about him.  He just couldn't let the fact that 1/4 was easier to deal with than 21% go.  It just HAD to be the exact number.

I've been an Observer subscriber for five years now, and the tension between these two this week has been borderline unpleasant.  It comes off like Dave is one comment away from hanging up.  I've always felt like Dave has tolerated Bryan over the years just because he knows he's smarter than him, but lately the arguments have gotten more heated, and I don't know if it's going live or just caring more, but Bryan seems to be putting a lot more effort into his shows lately.  9 times out of 10, I'll take Dave's side, but Bryan has actually done a great job conveying his side over the Daniel Bryan situation the past few days.  And Dave, while I get where's he coming from, he just comes off out of touch.  I get what's he saying, he's doing a bad job saying it.

The WWE Network is really going to be interesting when it launches.  It could arguably end up being some of the best radio they ever do.

To me, Dave is one of those guys who's so entrenched and obsessed in what he does and being the best at it... that he's just not a normal guy anymore. Almost like people who are genius scientists and all that. You hear them in an interview and think, "wow, something's off with them" but they're a genius and brilliant.

I listened to the Austin podcast with both Dave and Wade Keller and it's amazing how different both guys come off. Keller sounds like a regular dude that you'd talk to at the pub or something. Wade was making great sports analogies (and they were modern analogies!) and sounded great. Dave was just Dave. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think it's kinda the result of what it takes to be Dave Meltzer.

Hope that makes sense.

I think this social element is probably more likely.

I doubt either has much experience with such a thing. Dave has more obviously, but Bryan hasn't exactly worked in an office setting or with a lot of peers. It's wrestlers who are inherently fucked up or teaching kids and such.

It's just lack of real life social interaction. We've seen what Dave's lair looks like.

At least Dave does have a wife and kids.

Although, i did not meet them when i went to his house, so they could be a work. :)

Bryan's got a wife and uh, some animals? I have no clue, I haven't listened in years.

I feel that may be a little too much credit....like genius and all.  Yes he had the open-mindedness to understand the connection between market/history/product in wrestling and the willingness to take it seriously.  So he recognized that there was a story there and people who wanted to hear it before most other people did.  But I don't know if that is brilliant or that it wouldn't have happened without him.  The business was going to open itself to the world a bit no matter what in the information age.

I think the closest thing to brilliant or genius that he accomplished was somehow knowing how to get the business to open up to him initially, when he was the only guy...to know how to talk to those guys and cultivate relationships into what was essentially a closed carny society.  That took some kind of special natural communication ability to mediate between them and us without them running away or attacking him...

...kind of like Dian Fossy.

It must be weird when everyone's always trying to read more into what you say/write, twisting it, misquoting it, and there's a whole industry of websites dedicated to poorly paraphrasing (and sometimes completely fabricating) things you report.

The Observer's a trade publication, essentially. It writes specifically about one industry and its offshoots.

I worked for some trade publications. There's no real difference between Dave's obsession and the people I worked with who only talked and obsessed about the energy industry. The people who buy those products are all wonks who require really specific and tailored industry information.

A lot of the subscribers are essentially the same. A large amount of wrestling fans are so intrigued by the decision making processes made behind-the-scenes. A lot of the subscribers of the energy publications I worked for were investors looking to make money by finding out about those really similar decisions.

I'm not saying the Rainmaker was undeserving of winning, but I'm really surprised that Cesaro's Giant Swing of Daniel Bryan's knee didn't win.

If I may return to the year-end awards, why did a short clothesline win Best Wrestling Maneuver?

It is the most over, best protected finisher in the business.

People who read WON hate Cena and love Okada. This isn't astonishing.

I swear I'm not concern trolling here, but I wonder if Dave will take a hit from the WWE network.  Like if you are a big fan and you have $10/month you can justify blowing on a wrestling site but $20 is a stretch...and you are going to choose between the Observer and the WWE network...it seems he might lose that fight a bunch of times over.

The AA is protected too.  Doesn't make it any less unhurty-looking.

And a Japanese finisher especially should not look unhurty.

The AA gets kicked out of every now and then. To the best of my knowledge, the Rainmaker's only been kicked out of once.

Um, they're paying more than $10 bucks now. If anything, the number of subscribers would go up because they don't have to pay full price for shitty PPVs.

My guess is that the majority of people who subscribe to the WON are hardcores whose main hobby is wrestling.  It's not like casual wrestling fans read or care about the WON.  Those hardcores will buy both, like myself.  Hell, I'll be subbing the Network, F4W.com, and the print WONs.

I've betrayed the shallowness of my fandom.  I've never been able to convince myself to spend the money for a WON subscription, but there's a good chance I'll subscribe to the network.

It has been a long time since I have subscribed to the WON. For people who still do what is the attraction? There is so much better writing available for free on the internet and it isn't like you need it for the news anymore.
