Curt McGirt Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Aw man, I loved Joe Don Baker. They play either Mitchell or Final Justice on MST3K's streaming channel all the time, which is interesting because: Quote According to page 97 of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide, the cast had heard a rumor that actor Joe Don Baker was very angry at the MST3K treatment of Mitchell, and threatened physical violence on any of the cast or crew, should he ever meet them in person. This did not stop them from later featuring (and happily mocking) another of Baker's films, Final Justice, and hurling even more vicious insults at Baker.[7] Kevin Murphy, who played MST3K's robot commentator Tom Servo, as well as serving as one of the show's writers, later said Baker likely meant it in a joking manner. Nevertheless, MST3K head writer and star Michael J. Nelson stated that he avoided running into Baker when he discovered that they were both staying at the same hotel. Well then. He was such a hardass in the Cape Fear remake, one of the first people that I ever probably understood as being a capital-C Character Actor. "A little hospital job". What a line. I just recorded The Outfit a couple months back for the DVR off TCM, too. RIP
Curt McGirt Posted May 19 Posted May 19 I just turned on the MST3K channel and MITCHELL IS GOING OFF THE AIR. Goddammit.
Contentious C Posted May 19 Posted May 19 My brain saw "Kevin" and "Servo" near each other spatially and said to itself, "Wait, what did Kevin Sorbo have to do with MST3K?"
Zimbra Posted May 20 Posted May 20 TIL George Wendt was a big punk fan and loved the Minutemen and the Replacements. King shit. 6
Curt McGirt Posted May 21 Posted May 21 https://www.rogerebert.com/tributes/lookins-free-joe-don-baker-1936-2025 Another goddamn stunning obit from this site. I need to see Charlie Varrick again, badly. I need to see Welcome Home, Soldier Boys immediately. There are a lot of things listed here you will want to in the same way.
Cobra Commander Posted May 21 Posted May 21 A friend of mine who I've known since 2nd grade posted about George Wendt being a friend/mentor to her in her acting work (they had lunch around twice a month and he saw her one woman show when she was in LA). We kinda go hard on the local angle for 'our' celebrities in this part of the country. George was also the uncle of Jason Sudeikis, who is part of a crew of KC-area celebs who do an annual charity event for Children's Mercy (Big Slick). So that came up and also George graduating from college in KC (Rockhurst). It's closer to "Ed Asner, he's from here" than "Tony Dow, you know, Wally the older brother from Leave It To Beaver, he married a woman from here" for our local angles. We're not in the business of shunning the people with ties to the area who are famous. To put it one way.

The Natural Posted June 2 Posted June 2 (edited) John Brenkus, founder and host of the Emmy-winning show Sport Science, has died. He was 54. The producer and television personality died on Saturday, May 31, following a battle with depression, his official X account shared in a statement over the weekend. "It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus had passed away," the statement began. It continued, "John, co-founder of BASE Productions, founder of Brinx.TV and co-creator and host of the 6-time Emmy Award-winning Sport Science, had been battling depression." "John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31st, 2025," the statement continued. "His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help." --- This hit home with me for obvious reasons. RIP. The Natural Posted June 2 Posted June 2 What on Earth possesses someone to grab a gun and shoot someone? Bloody culture of guns watching across the ocean.
