RIPPA Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 The Phillies extended manager Rob Thomson for another year Basically his old deal ended next year (2025). They added a year so he wouldn't be a lame duck coach 2

Which of course, with a new stadium coming, the Rays really, really, REALLY don't want to spend. And without a drainage system the Trop is unusable. So the Rays might just be really screwed here
odessasteps Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 I don’t know if it was here, but I asked the other day but I asked about damages to the spring training parks in the area (Clearwater, Dunedin, etc).

(And then you'll fully understand why DeSantis wanted to become President ASAP.) 1
Pete Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 The jockeying for Tampa's temporary digs will be interesting. If they stay local-ish Nashville and Charlotte should be in play... hell, I could almost see them in Atlanta making Georgia State's stadium fit for baseball again.
odessasteps Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 My cousin is a contractor in the Tampa area. He was just about to finish a new set of townhouses when Milton hit. And his house is a wreck because they hadn’t finished getting it back in shape from Helene. Just one of millions of stories.
Dolfan in NYC Posted October 16, 2024 Author Posted October 16, 2024 For the record, I'm fully expecting the Rays to make some kind of deal with the Yankees to play in their spring training facilities until the Trop is ready. (Or... I guess the new stadium is?) Steinbrenner Field can hold 11,000 people and is probably more than "MLB ready" enough. Question is, how badly will the Yankees screw them over.
RIPPA Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 Just a reminder - the Braves would continue to throw a fit at any attempts to play games in Nashville or Charlotte (that is always the biggest hold up to expansion - Atlanta claims everything from Florida to DC as their "territory") Tim Kurkjian was on Le Batard today and said the early guessing he has heard is that the Marlins and Rays would share the Marlins stadium because it seems as if MLB wants to keep the games in Florida Re: Steinbrenner Field. More likely they would go to Toronto's Florida stadium since that one was already made "MLB ready" when the Jays couldn't play in Canada during COVID

I hated most of the time I was an agent, but especially so when taking calls from FL customers being non renewed and kicking them over to Assurant.

I actually looked at the Tampa and Dunedin 2025 schedules. You can cover 78 of the 81 Tampa Bay dates at Steinbrenner Field or Dunedin's Ballpark. I think they can only cover half of the Rays home schedule if they play in Marlins Park. The Royals blog I read got bored and mentioned "hey, the College World Series plays in a 24500 seat ballpark that has one other tenant (Creighton college baseball)" to pitch the concept of the Tampa Bay Rays playing home games in Omaha.
odessasteps Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 I’d think they don’t want to move them too far away, at least staying in the Eastern or maybe Central time zones.
BobbyWhioux Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 The Atlanta Braves were in the NL West for 24 years. MLB could survive having the Oakland Rays for 1

RIPPA Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 Both Durham and Montreal have ruled themselves out of being able to host the Rays The Durham Bulls say it can’t happen due to scheduling conflicts Montreal, ironically enough, is replacing the roof of their stadium and won’t be available for three years.
Cobra Commander Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 how long until other teams rule out the Rays playing 162 road games due to scheduling conflicts
odessasteps Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 Adding Darren Baker to my MLB the show team made me feel so old.
RIPPA Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 Another blurb regarding what the fuck the Rays are going to do Quote The top Rays story remains the team’s likely need for a new temporary home to begin the 2025 season, as Tropicana Field sustained heavy damage due to Hurricane Milton. John Romano of the Tampa Bay Times shares some details about the insurance policies attached to the stadium, and the possibility that the city of St. Petersburg (which is funding the repairs) might simply decide that repairing the Trop isn’t worth it since the Rays’ new ballpark is set to open in 2028. “We’re going to try to figure out every avenue, both through insurance and otherwise, to try to make sure the Rays have a place to play in St. Petersburg. But we’re going to make sure that it’s a financially responsible decision,” city council member Copley Gerdes said. Romano opines that Orlando might check off the most boxes as the Rays’ interim home, as the team could play at the 9500-seat stadium on the ESPN Wide World Of Sports complex at Walt Disney World. https://www.tampabay.com/sports/2024/10/19/tropicana-field-hurricane-damage-insurance-espn-wide-world-of-sports-orlando/
odessasteps Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 Maybe they could rebrand as The Florida Rays and just play all over the state.
RIPPA Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 No Freddie Freeman tonight Not really a surprise since its a lefty and he has stunk these playoffs
RIPPA Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 The Royals Salvador Perez is this year's Roberto Clemente Award winner
RIPPA Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 Skip Schumaker is no longer "under consideration" for the White Sox gig No one has specified yet if he withdrew or if the White Sox told him he wasn't getting it Quote Schumaker’s subtraction from the Sox’ list of candidates leaves Guardians bench coach Craig Albernaz, Dodgers bench coach Danny Lehmann, Cardinals bench coach Daniel Descalso, Rangers associate manager Will Venable, former Angels manager Phil Nevin and current interim manager Grady Sizemore as the current list of known candidates still in the running for the position. Rangers bench coach Donnie Ecker was removed from consideration last week, while Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough and Padres special assistant A.J. Ellis were taken off the list over the weekend. Tigers bench coach George Lombard is also out of the running as of last night.
