If you had to narrow down the best AEW gimmick matches, what would you pick? I'd go with for match quality and standing out to the others:

Casino Gauntlet match.

Texas Death Match.

Anarchy in the Arena.

Honourable mentions to Light's Out and the Steel Cage match. Blood and Guts may be a surprise omission to you all but that's partly because I've had problems with all of them.

Again IMO, but D'Amore's on screen character was less evil authority figure than overworked middle management which I thought was a good twist on the on screen authority figure trope.

But I know different folks like different stuff so I'm not here to yuck anyone's yum and I'd hope people feel the same.

I really like you're reading of that D'Amore character, and remember you mentioning it prior. In theory, I would like that wrinkle of the character. The yuck of the yum is he couldn't keep said character off camera. Some shows he seemed to be in every goddamn segment with so many stories focused around him. I suppose he did sit under the Vince Russo learning tree.

Definitely some peaks for TNA in the time since 2014. I personally loved the 2016 Corgan era, and then the mentioned 2018/19 Callis/D'Amore era where everything was clicking.  I think Callis might have added a ton more than it may seem and that them two together really excelled more than just D'Amore on his own. Now they're reuniting somewhat as Callis is joining D'Amore's new Maple Leaf Pro, at least as a commentator alongside Mauro Ranallo, but I'd be curious if he ends up doing more there.

I sometimes wonder what Don Callis contributes to AEW creatively and behind the scenes. Ranallo/Callis has the potential to be my new favorite commentary team. I don't trust D'Amore's creative enough to be all that excited for Maple Leaf Pro, but my hope is it provides a DEFY/PWG/Big Indy for the plethora of great talent across this country. Especially interested to see if they integrate performers from outside of Ontario - especially the West Coast and Quebec regions. Also, happy to hear Scott and Don are still tight. There was so chatter that they were at odds.

I've enjoyed a lot of TNA/Impact over the years but I enjoy it separately from other wrestling, almost as if it is it's own subgenre of wrestling, like the way I watched Lucha Underground. On the other hand, there's no way I can watch something with Mauro commentating.

Back to AEW, I quite enjoyed the Barbed Wire Everywhere gimmick match Jericho had with Kingston. Blood and Guts should be up there but it always falls short somehow.

I've really liked all of the Parking Lot Brawls.

After subscribing to AEW+ I went back and watched all the Parking Lot Brawls and all the Blood & Guts matches and I have to say the Parking Lot Brawls were better.  Fun little violent matches that had good stories and didn’t overstay their welcome.  B&G, on the other hand, was always overlong and bloated, dragged at times when viewed commercial-free, and had nonsensical stuff like beds of nails and scissors…stuff that was just business exposing and lame.  Also, too many ended along the same lines, with someone verbally submitting to save someone else.

Yeah, I hate that wrestling trend of I Quit/ Submission only matches ending due to fear. They should end due to pain, not fear.

The problem is we see wrestlers surviving so much death defying stuff what could possibly make someone say I Quit (Eddie Kingston lost an I quit match when Jacob Fatu I think tried to pull his tooth out with a pair of pliers)

That’s why we have dumb stuff like a persons spouse or manager being threatened with harm unless they submit.

Rodney Dangerfield would have been unstoppable 'Take my wife, Please!"

Oh god. I just had a Final Destination vision of Jericho's final reinvention: Don Rickles/Rodney Dangerfield style comedian.

Konosuke Takeshita deserves a big push. Put a singles belt on him, I'd say the AEW TNT Championship.

Fozzy remake of “Rappin’ Rodney” for all the old dudes out there.

This got me thinking, what's the biggest secondary championship in AEW? I'd still say the TNT Championship as it's the oldest but that doesn't necessarily mean the best. I think the AEW International Championship is neck and neck with it if not surpassed it. I think about Orange Cassidy's long reign with it and I think Will Ospreay will have one as well. The AEW Continental Championship was better when it had the ROH World Championship and NJPW Strong Championship.

I was thinking about this with some recent discussion about younger wrestlers and pushes and... what exactly are they waiting for with Takeshita? Ignoring the prior month or so while he was doing the G1 his year has basically been winning qualifying matches for ppv multiman title matches, the Ospreay "go out there and have a good match" Callis deal which felt like the start of something but was mostly put aside, I think the tail end of the Jericho stuff was in 2024 but he's basically been without any real feud, program or storyline for the whole year so far. It's not like he hasn't been protected but he's been sorta adrift for a while now.

I wonder how long Takeshitas contract is for. He spoke highly of being in the G1 and NJPW I wouldn’t be surprised if he signs with them when his AEW contract is up especially with him getting lost in the shuffle of AEW now.

I'm guessing three years.

One of the mid card titles would be fine for now, but the long term plan for Takeshita should be a face turn and a World Title reign. If not, he might as well go to New Japan and trade the IWGP with Zack, Uemura and Oiwa in a glorious new golden age.

AEW loss would be NJPW gain. I'd add Yota Tsuji to those names.

Takeshita is still with DDT though. He might not even want to sign for NJPW.

Oh yeah, I really like Tsuji and he should definitely be a multiple time IWGP champ, his actual wrestling just doesn't excite me as much as the other four. He's pretty damned good though, and has loads of charisma. Umino also should have enough to be a top guy there, but he needs some sort of heel turn or general grittening up. Plus Gabe Kidd, heavyweight Dan Moloney and Clark Connors and Kevin Knight... The future of New Japan is bright, if AEW doesn't poach all their best dudes.

NJPW needs to push this new generation (is that the correct term) needing fresh blood with Kazuchika Okada/Will Ospreay leaving and Hiroshi Tanahashi/Tetsuya Naito shot. In your second to last post, you said Oiwa. Who is he again? Thanks.

Young lion from the class between Tsuji/Ren/Yuya/Shota and the current crop whose names I have yet to internalise, currently excursioning in Noah. I haven't seen much of his Noah stuff, but from what I have seen of him there and in New Japan, he looks like a future star. Good charisma, hits hard, built like a tank, I get no credit for stating the obvious and predicting Tokyo Dome main events in his future.
