AEW - JULY 2024

ROH being "AEW Dark but you now have to pay for it" definitely turned me off.  As others have said, I'd watch if it was part of my existing AEW+ sub, because who doesn't want more stuff for the same price?  But aside from that, nah.

I'm hoping they can work streaming or airing it into whatever the next deal is, like on MAX or even one of the lower tier WBD networks. I've said this before but it would be a nice vehicle to promote Dynamite if they had it running like, Wednesdays at 5 PM on TruTV or something. Shit, that OVW reality show is doing ok on Netflix, frame it like that and put it on TLC or something.

OVW doing well, eh?

They are doing pretty well based on things I've heard from people who work there or are close to the promotion.

That said, I have no idea who the hell thought they could fill that big of a venue.

Yea I was going to say the same as Log - that's a crazy building. AEW couldn't fill that right now, and 5-10 years ago WWE might've even struggled. A quick and dirty Google search says their weekly show usually only does 100-150 people, mostly regulars, so I feel like near 400 is pretty on point for their level. The only reason I brought it up anyway was just as a sort of out of the box, backdoor idea to get ROH aired somewhere. Sure, it's just Dark - but I f'n liked Dark!

It really bummed me out having to drop ROH Club a month or so ago.  I loved streaming it for whoever watched but I could stand to save $10 a month.  I still try and keep up with it but I have no interest at the moment in Death Before Dishonor.  I think part of it is that while Mark winning the title was tremendous he needs quality challengers that are consistently on ROH TV.  Strong doesn't fit the latter part and it's not that clear who would be.

I want to say I read a week or two ago that their normal weekly TV building is unusable right now(Air Conditioning issues, maybe?) so I'm sure they had to scramble to find a different solution fast.

Looks like that Pikeville show is a PPV. Looks like they're trying to tour a bit.

I know in the past, it was years of Wednesday tv tapings and then fundraiser/paid shows on weekends in smaller Kentucky/Southern Indiana towns. When they were still affiliated with WWE, they'd have a big yearly show at the State Fair where they'd have some of the bigger WWE names appear.

I suppose the success of the Netflix show might have them stretching out a bit.

I’m fine with Thursdays and the paywall, but there’s a litany of problems with the current state of the promotion. Things I sadly don’t see changing. Most importantly many of the Champions rarely appearing on the flagship program while doing jobs on AEWtv. And how all those roh titles have cluttered and devalued the actual/purposeful aew championships creating this chaos of everyone having meaningless belts. I certainly didn’t see that one coming. The shitty impact it’s had has been huge. Further, using roh as Dark, which is very true, results in wrestlers getting wins on ROH, that nobody sees, and then routinely jobbing on AEWtv. It kills any momentum for wrestlers to move up the roh ranks. Dedicating the show to an actual roster with actual regular defending champions and booked by a small dedicated team seems like far too much to ask for at this point. Lastly, the fact that they carelessly announce the time of the Collision events as a half hour after the ROH tapings begin says about all you need to know about the sad state of the letters r o and h.

This!  Lee Moriarty had a match on Collision or Dynamite and they said he was on a six match winning streak.  That was laughable at best and an insult to everyone’s intelligence at worst.  Six jobber squashes on ROH, unseen by 95% of your normal audience, is utter bullshit when we all know Lee is jobbing whenever we see him on the main shows.

It's astonishing to me that nobody in that TK bubble has been able to convince him how damaging it's been to have all these ROH belts on AEW TV. I sense his reasoning is to keep the name alive for an endgame TV deal, but it seems pretty clear to everyone at this point how much it's hurting the current product.

However, TK has done a fine job of diluting the AEW titles with other AEW titles and NJPW titles, even without the ROH titles.

There was no need to introduce the Continental or International titles.

It's so odd to me the routing ended up with show 250 being in a small market like Little Rock Arkansas. The max capacity they're set for according to Wrestle Tix is only like 2500. For this stacked of a card? Kind of an indictment of the live events department if you ask me.

I was going to mention that last week when they announced the matches, like “really, Little Rock Arkansas is where you’re doing this?”

I've been very carefully pro-MJF as I think he can pull things back from the workrate imbalance like no one else is in a position to, BUT, I am pretty scared about the lack of matches announced for this card. I think they might go real long and that MJF is going to go out of his way to prove he can hang which is the worst possible thing he could do.

The solution with ROH is what it was two years ago - have it on Max, a completely separate product with maybe a bi-annual "cross over" show with AEW to try to get more eyeballs to it. They could have both the backlog and new shows on it. I assume like everyone else the reason that never happened is WBD either flat out wasn't interested or offered peanuts. So for the last two years its been this weird show with no identity that TK doesn't know what to do with. I've been fairly vocal in the past that one of the mistakes they made last year was mixing ROH too much on Dynamite, making the show too unfocused. I think that's been mostly fixed but doesn't change the fact ROH still has issues.

I'm a big fan of his matches with Danielson and Omega, so going long and hanging works just fine for me.

The house show circuit tanking might have also killed an appetite for separate ROH shows and tapings.

I'd get rid of the AEW Continental Championship, lost it's lustre when the ROH World Championship and NJPW Strong Championship was split. The visual as well of three belts. I think the AEW International Championship is now the most prestigious secondary belt followed by the AEW TNT Championship which has fluctuated in it's fortunes.

I just think if you can make the ROH belt the secondary singles title, just do it, and scrap the others. There is a lot more history and prestige to that title than the randos they just made up.  Keep the TNT as a traditional "TV title" with open challenges like they've regularly done.

AEW World Title
ROH Heavyweight
AEW Tag
AEW Trios
AEW TNT

That is all you need, especially when random titles from abroad pop up regularly.

For the ladies, just the singles & tags. No TBS and ROH and ROH TV, etc...

Good shout.

I'd be fine with that, but ROH Pure title should stay for ROH to have a secondary title. It's got a cool gimmick, and it'd throw them a bone.

Not to ask for yet more gold but never having a women's tag with all this other shit around is really stupid.

The point in which the brand started getting diluted was incorporating ROH into AEW. If you want to reinvigerate and strengthen the AEW brand you have to de-ephasize the secondary brand. You dont have to completely close it (I probably would). But you do have to scrap any overlap.

Separate rosters. Separate taping. Titles kept Separate. Focus on AEW. Make AEW as good as you possibly can. ROH can exist but for in a separate universe with a tiny budget. You kind of have to take the WWE approach and turn it into a developmental brand just so it can have an identity.

The title situation is crazy. Keep the ROH belts in ROH. It should be pared down to a men's world and a women's world, a men's pure title & a women's pure title, men's tags and women's tags. And that's it. You don't need tv titles for a brand that doesn't even have tv.

As for AEW, the titles desperately need pared down. The International title has become the unquestionable number 2 title. I think you need to restructure. Men's world and women's world. Men's international & women's international. Men's tags and women's tags. Scrap TBS / TNT titles (especially if they end up on another network). Scrap the continental title and make that your cash in gimmick. Do a briefcase or a chip or some shit. Whoever wins the C2 can cash it in whenever. You just don't need a belt for that. Scrap the trios & ftw titles.

Basically for shit to be important it has to have focus. There's literally too many things they try to put focus on and it makes nothing have focus. Not every fued needs a belt. You can do fun trios matches without needing a title for it.

Make the important shit **feel** important.

I like the ROH Pure Championship and the rules. ROH was wrong to get rid of it for a time.
