There's some buzz on the twitter-sphere that there have been "lines drawn" and that Hijo del Vikingo and some others might not be on AEW TV for a while, even if medically cleared. IDK what it means, or if there's anything to it, but I found it interesting...

I mean, no wrestler under contract with AAA is going to appear on AEW with AEW working with CMLL, plus with AAA probably not real happy with AEW in general. I don't think AAA has many wrestlers actually under contract but I believe Vikingo is one of them.

TK announced on Twitter that Ishii will be staying with AEW for the rest of summer, so Gordi will have at least some stuff to look forward to each week 😇

I believe the only AAA contracted talent that appeared for AEW are Vikingo, and possibly Komander (who appears to actually be freelance, but is the AAA cruiserweight champion).

As far as a "line in the sand", Konnan said essentially that directly to TK on his most recent podcast: “I’m going to be very vague – what comes around goes around, have your little fun while you can.”

I can see this situation w/ Vaquer perhaps causing CMLL to somewhat go back into isolation mode again, but at the same time TK's track record indicates he will want to double down and help CMLL as much as possible to put the screws to Konnan.

Someone fill me in; what's the source of the bad blood between AAA and CMLL? I had assumed AAA would've been okay with AEW bringing in CMLL folks, since that's what happened at FD.

I won't pretend to know the source, and if its a fun story I hope someone here can fill us in, but my understanding is they've hated each other for decades. They never work together and don't work with the same promotions. The funny part about Konnan being the way he is, he's just the booker of AAA, not the owner. With the way AAA is going, I don't even know how much longer Konnan will be in charge there, so I don't think TK is really sweating Konnan being mad at him or cryptic.

A very very long story short....

CMLL is the oldest promotion in the world, very conservative in their presentation of wrestling. In late 1980s after Lucha returned to tv in Mexico, Antonio Peña was the booker for CMLL, and he was pushing to modernize the product for tv.  Business was very good.

Televisa wanted the product modernized even further, and CMLL resisted. So, Televisa approached Peña about starting a new company. Peña then secretly went to two of his top stars, Octagon & Konnan, and they all secretly recruited most of the CMLL roster to jump to the new promotion.

CMLL losing all of their top stars overnight almost put them out business.  AAA was hot immediately, and in less than a year drew 45K to the Plaza del Toros in Mexico City.

CMLL never forgave Konnan for his part in this.  Octagon was only brought back to CMLL recently, because he publically denounced AAA and apologized for betraying CMLL decades before. The Lutteroth/Alonso family hold grudges.

Didn't Konnan book FTR to lose the AAA tag belts to Dralistico + Dragon Lee only for Lee to announce to the crowd immediately after the match that he was going to WWE?

"What goes around comes around," give me a fucking break. Konnan just stirring up shit for attention.

I believe what actually started the rant on the podcast (I read a recap) was him going off about how AAA out the mixed tag titles on Sammy & Tay, and then AEW pulling her off a AAA show at the "last minute" so they had to strip them of the titles.

Keep in mind that none of the AAA titles ever actually change hands, because they put them on folks that are outside of AAA, and they usually quit before dropping the belts back. Konnan just like to project his own shortcoming on to others.

So, maybe this needs its own thread, but when WCW did "When Worlds Collide," was that with AAA or CMLL? I vaguely remember hearing about luchadores in the Saks Magazines and having that be a completely different set than anyone I was seeing on tv. Idk what I'm trying to ask. Would that split have affected any of that?

AAA. And after that, WCW mostly booked the luchadors thru Konnan.  Which is why most were AAA/Promo Azteca talent, and not from CMLL.

One of the key differences between CMLL and AAA is that CMLL owns their own venues, and runs them regularly, while AAA is a touring promotion.  So AAA, when business isn't hot, really only runs tv tapings, and everything else are independent shows that book talent thru AAA (or are sold shows). Since Konnan is from the US, he was always looking to break out in the US scene after he became a star in Mexico. Thus, he leveraged his position in AAA to be the conduit for US promotions to book AAA talent. He then used his leverage as the guy holding the keys to getting into WCW to leave AAA and start Promo Azteca. When Promo & WCW both went out of business, Konnan came crawling back to AAA, and Peña took him back. When Peña died, his heirs basically gave Konnan the keys to the kingdom.  Then, when Dorian Roldan took over AAA, Konnan lost power, and was forced out for a bit.  That was when he was heavily involved with Impact and the Crash promotion in Tijuana, before he went back to AAA yet again.

Not sure how much is a shoot versus being an angle, but on screen at least Latin Lover was recently brough back in a GM role, and it appears he may be in a power struggle with Konnan behind the scenes.

Boy, having to choose between Carlos and TK in a feud is a real Iraq/Iran situation.

Is it? TK comes off as a guy who if anything, loves wrestling a little too much. Carlos comes off like a lying carny...

It's very intriguing the dynamics of this to the point where everytime I've heard Bischoff (and it probably changes when he actually talks to Konnan) mention how those relationships worked you can tell he doesn't like that he inadvertently made Konnan a power broker. It's probably why he (Eric) was fixated on having people lose their mask when it made ZERO sense. So it feels like he's gaining back leverage.

She looked great at Forbidden Door and WWE almost immediately going after her now when she's been around and had buzz for a while does feel like a shot at AEW/CMLL/NJPW......but ya know, that's what happens in a wrestling war when people aren't locked down under contract

She's super talented, looks great.....why isn't she a good fit for WWE?  They're going to push her anyways just because they're petty

How's her English promo skills?

She was cutting promos (in English; They subtitled her) on AEW TV in the build up to Forbidden Door, I'm sure you can find some on YouTube if you look for them.

All In is shaping up.

  • Danielson vs Swerve
  • Storm vs May
  • Mone vs Baker
  • MJF vs Ospreay

all seem for certain. There's a lot of time left before the PPV. So you don't know if other things might get blown off.

I could see for instance...

  • either ... Conglomeration vs Patriarchy (if they can get there in time) or some sort of multiple team thing (battle royal?) with HoB and Bang Bang Gang and maybe Top Flight/Andretti and another team or two.
  • Bucks vs Acclaimed (maybe add in the FTR) if they don't blow that off in the mean time.
  • A Stat vs Willow gimmick match
  • Jericho vs HOOK
  • Okada vs Page?
  • Darby vs Perry

They have the Texas residency and a bunch of Dynamites between now and August 25 so who knows what gets blown off. There's also the It does feel like a tighter, more focused, less haphazard approach on top. There's also All Out right after it.

I feel like MJF vs Ospreay is a just stop along the way to Ospreay vs Don Callis Family in some way... Callis isn't going to just let Ospreay quit, we will be coming back to that. Maybe Don is bringing in Ricochet?

I think they'll be a Stadium Stampede to get more wrestlers on the card. BCC vs. The Elite maybe?

You’ve already pitched this which has me curious. Who do you think is representing BCC against at least four or five (if we count Hangman) members of The Elite? Bryan’s out so that leaves Claudio, Mox, and Wheeler since Little Red Shoes is hurt too. That’s not a good plan nor is forcing two more guys into the BCC it was dumb enough last year trying to say why Santana was suddenly with them. I hope they forget about it if that’s the best TK can come up with.

Doing Anarchy in the Arena, Blood and Guts, and Stadium Stampede each year every year feels like overkill.

What would be interesting, however, is if they did let the women have Stadium Stampede this year and had team Mercedes + Stat vs team Britt and Willow.
