Yeah, that's where I'm at, too.  Losing pets sucks, but it's outweighed by the joy I get from them.

Thankfully James is doing real well right now.  The big thing with kidney disease is that they'll quit eating, but he's still got a good appetite and will come and yowl at me every time I'm in the kitchen until I give him some goo and/or some carnitas.  He is going to get so insanely spoiled in the time he's got left.

Our other 19 year old cat, Simon, is mostly blind, mostly deaf, and has dementia but is otherwise healthy and content to spend entire days sleeping in my wife's lap.

I can't imagine my life without pets. I've had four cats since I've been 16. I currently have two. No matter how bad things get at times, I know my cats will be there with unconditional love. Losing them does hurt. Unlike my own father, I cried a lot having to put two to sleep. I don't have kids, so they are my babies.

Yeah, my pets are everything to me. Pets are family to me. Always had them and I remember every one. We've had 5 dogs since 2002. I currently have 2. I love them all but I especially love and miss Rayven. Rayven had a rare aggressive cancer only 10% get but because of where it was, we couldn't amputate. Found out in May 2021, somehow made her 6th birthday in August 2021 and passed away September 2021. I lost five of my family that year and Rayven was by far the worst. One of the three worst passings in my life. I'm beefing now. Fuck cancer.

First sign your pet has dementia:  is a cat

How you do diagnose dementia in a pet? I presume they start behaving strangely and then there's an MRI done?

It's an empiric diagnosis, so it's really just based on behavior.  In Simon's case he had a likely stroke a couple of years ago that probably caused some cognitive decline (to the extent that cats can cogitate in the first place, I guess)

His stroke was the scariest goddamn thing because he jumped up from a dead sleep, ran to the middle of the room and started spinning in a circle and yowling, then dashed to the other end of the room and fell over.  Thankfully he never lost consciousness and was pretty much fine 10 minutes later.

Our old cat had a dementia diagnosis a few months before she passed away. She'd always been a grumpy loner but she had suddenly become friendly and was always looking for physical contact. We told the vet who said she was old, probably had dementia, and had forgotten why she was grumpy all of the time. She had also developed a newfound interest in human food. I perceived the doctor's message to be that the changes in behavior were best described by dementia because of her advanced age.

Coincidentally, my father was diagnosed with dementia a year ago. He too was always a grumpy, miserable man but has become very friendly and mild. My brother often uses the phrase "He forgot he was an asshole." Obviously my feelings about this are more nuanced than simply enjoying that he's mellowed out but it has been nice to hear positive sentiments coming out of his mouth for once in my life.

I can't get "but your father's dead" out of my head now.

This was a real conversation that took place yesterday at my grandmother's nursing home with one of the aides.

Are you having a nice father's day?

Me: Oh, I'm not a father.

What about your father?

Me: But my father's dead...dead...dead...but my father's dead

I could have mentioned that my stepfather is alive and well, but that just wouldn't have been as funny.

The best wrestling related use of that meme I ever saw was in 2020-2021ish: "Southern indy promoters getting their Covid stimulus, thinking of booking the Rock n Roll Express"

I've been playing far too much Elden Ring lately, by a company famous for its "do big falls, take damage" mechanic, and I just finished watching the Alicia Vikander Tomb Raider, which has as much ridiculousness as the games.

I say this because I passed out a couple of times and fell last night from some kind of weird dizzy spell, and I dinged up my face pretty good in the process.  And this was (probably) just the equivalent of a prat fall.  And all I can think about video game jumps now is, "Motherfucker, do you realize how much you bust your ass falling 6 feet?!?!?"

WIthout doxxing myself too much, I was doing some judging for youth sports last night and someone came to me with a DQ slip asking who to give it to.  I started looking around and said "where is the referee?"  It took all I had to not segue into "HE TRIED TO FUCK ON ME!"

On my first day training, I was temped to yell I'M GONNA CALL IT RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE DADDY, and obviously making the "call it down the middle" hand sign.

Less than 6 feet is plenty! Falling 3 feet backwards would probably do damage I would prefer not to even think about!

Today's the 11th anniversary of my late great Mum's passing, she was only 53. It's been brutal. Love and miss you so much, Mum. Paul xxx.

We're saying goodbye to James tomorrow so I'm up bawling and feeding him fistfuls of ham.

I'm sorry to hear that. At least he's getting spoiled before making the trip to the rainbow bridge.

Thanks, boss.  He had a very good last day of napping, snuggling with us, and eating lunchmeat.

We should all be so lucky to have a last day like that.

On Wednesday, I'm heading to Seattle for the 2025 Rubik's Cube World Championship.  At 2000 entrants, it's the largest competition ever.  They sold something like 4500 spectator tickets for it, too.  I'll be competing - poorly - and mostly staffing.  ESPN will be there for a segment for their "50 States in 50 Days" thing they're doing.  Kevin Negandhi will be there, presumably interviewing folks.  In round 1 of the main 3x3 event, I'll be in the catbird seat, judging the world record holders in the event with a decent chance of being up close for a world record.  To say I'm stoked about the whole thing would be a gigantic understatement.

Annnnnnd they shuffled assignments and I'm no longer in that judging spot. I am a tad displeased.

I ended up with some pretty choice assignments anyway. Also had one of my solves broadcast over the stream, which is pretty cool.

The competition was amazing, with one dramatic moment after another in the Finals of different events. 3x3 Finals was amazing, coming down to the last solve before being won with an average time of 4.23. The crowd exploded for it, 5000 people going nuts. Awesome.

And a friend of mine, who I've been watching compete for 7 years, successfully defended his world title, competing in his hometown. Being the first to tell his parents he'd won (it's tough to follow from the audience if you're not tracking the times online, which they weren't) and hugging them was awesome. They are just about the nicest people ever.

So, yeah, great stuff.
