If I were you, I'd probably throw that fubar'd phone in the outside trash and get it as far away from anything flammable as you can, just in case.

Just some random weirdness over the past few days. Wednesday I was leaving work and my phone didn't connect to the bluetooth. Weird. I opened the case I carry that phone in and it was deader than disco and hotter than a $2 pistol. Weird. I plugged it into the charger and headed home. After I got home I charged it to 100% and shut it down. The next morning I turned the phone on and while listening to a podcast over an hour it went from 100% to 85%. I got headed to work and as I'm sitting at the booth to get my ticket to get onto the Indiana Toll Road the pickup in front of me gets impatient waiting on the person on front of him taking too long to get their ticket, so he puts his truck in reverse and starts backing up and I see those white reverse lights and start honking the horn and he backs right into me just as the person in front of him takes off.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?
He pulled off, I grabbed my ticket and pulled off. We both didn't see any damage to my car(because we were looking at the center of the grill), but I insisted on calling the police(just to cover my ass). An Indiana State Trooper showed up and immediately noticed the damage where the pickup's trailer hitch hit my bumper. We finished our business and I filed my claim with my insurance a few hours later. I heard from both a body shop and a car rental agency within ten minutes of submitting the claim.
I had the car looked at today after work and made an appointment for mid-May to get the car fixed.
My mantra is "This is why we have insurance!" and I was mellower than Manilow during the situation.
Then I got to work and took my phone out of the case and noticed it was slightly arched. I Googled it and a Reddit link later I found out that the battery was FUBAR'd. So this morning I tossed that phone into the trash and instead of having two phones(one for podcasts, one for everything else) I've got one phone handling everything like a champ. The podcast phone was an Xfinity Mobile and the other phone was a Tracfone. Tracfone has been my jam since '08.
Glad it's the weekend and we're good to go.

I tossed it in the trash first thing Friday morning(Trash Day) and went from there.

I don't post on this thread often but I wanted to tell my cautionary tale in case it helps someone else!

Quick summary: Three years ago while while moving I felt some pain in my side. The pain was pretty constant but would go away for days at a time so I figured I just tweaked something. Didn't go to the doctor. About a year and a half ago, still in that same pain I finally realized I likely had a hernia (still no doctor) but I was able to push it back in and the pain went away and I thought meh people live with hernias its fine. Six months ago the pain gets worse/daily.

After finally accepting my fate I made a call to my doctor and made an appointment but it wasn't for two months. Fine, I waited two months dealing with the pain with daily heating pad and occasional meds (I have erythema ab igne now from the heating pad usage). Then we had a big snow storm the day of that appointment, they cancelled and it was pushed back another two months for a new appointment. Pain. Lesson here: I should have just gone to Urgent Care as the hernia was obvious enough they also could have gotten me a referral to the surgeon.

Finally in March I got to the doctor, he was like 'yep that's a hernia', off to the surgeon in mid-March. Surgeon said 'yep that's a hernia', we set a date for surgery May 1st. Now this is my first ever surgery, I've never even had any broken bones or stitches, a very blessed life. Anyway, did the surgery on Thursday (mychart notes from the surgeon noted I had a "huge" hernia, thanks doc) and I am now recovering. I had it done the laparoscopy method, seemingly no unusual side effects, just the usual soreness and my incisions hurt a bit. He didn't give me any prescribed drugs so I'm just trucking along with Motrin, I assume it'll be fine. Follow-up is in ten days.

I say all this to say, I know now from talking to friends/family that hernia surgery is fairly common so if you do think you may have one don't be like Kevin and at least get a doctor to look at it. I could have/should have saved myself a couple years of pain, not all hernias do need immediate surgery but some do and that's something a doctor will help determine. And of course I ran the risk of it getting much worse and becoming an emergency, which could have led to serious complications. I'm on the mend now, all good, but just wanted to tell my story in case it helps someone else here down the road.

I went to the doctor today. Everything was as good as could be for an overweight diabetic. My next visit, however, I'm going to have to get screened for colon cancer. Ahh, the joys of being 44.

My dad had a hernia that he let get ridiculously out of control, to the point that doctors weren't sure that they could safely operate on him without losing him on the table. Before he passed, he'd been talking about how it had been long enough and he was ready to get it taken care of.......

I take the car to my father in law, who pokes around with it a bit, and finds the problem in the tail light. He makes a couple of calls (he's Italian, so he knows people), and finds out exactly what causes that particular issue with that model of Nissan. And we order the part to replace, new shocks, and a new air filter for a grand total of $150. So 95% less than the dealership wanted. The cost for the taillight part itself? $56! And the real kicker is that when I was driving back, the HUD didn't have any problems at all with me making left turns.

Update: For $56 and about twenty minutes, about 17 of which was us taking apart the trunk in order to get to the tail light assembly to switch out the sensor, my tail light is in perfect working order. We also replaced the shocks which weren't "leaking fluid" as the dealship told us, they were just a little dirty. Moral of the story: Screw the dealership service people whenever possible, find someone who "knows people"

Had a colonoscopy/endoscopy today.  There was a raven perched above the door when we got there, which didn’t seem like the most promising omen.

The highlight of the trip was probably whatever hits to the 80s and 90s station the office had on playing I Wanna Be Sedated about 10 minutes before they wheeled me back.

Saw a guy at a punk show in a wheelchair wearing a shirt that said "put me in my wheelchair, get me to the show"

Trigger warning: alcohol abuse

Spoiler

Well I fucked up bigtime again and ended up having a seizure from withdrawals. I basically used the little bit of jury duty money and saved change and went on a bender, and it didn't end well. I woke up not even knowing what age I was or what year it was. For some reason the back of my thighs, my ankles, and my upper arms are incredibly sore. The worst part of it is my folks witnessed it all. Again. I bit my tongue too.

Meanwhile I got job offers that who knows if I'll take or make. One's for Rural King and that's probably just more heavy lifting that I'm trying to avoid. Another is Guitar Center and I don't know whether I'm musically accomplished enough to be taken seriously. It's not like can even pick up a guitar and shred for them like the rest of their employees; I may have been in five bands and still work on music but they involved nothing like that. I missed my appointment with my therapist and now that's a bullet I can't dodge, we rescheduled and I probably have a $100 fee on my head.

So, crawling out of the pit again, maybe this will help me, probably not.

I'm doing what I can. I see my councelor once a week; also working on employment. It's a tale of two cities. I intend to take a long break now.

I'm the new chairperson at my Sunday night NA meeting. I'll have six months clean June 10th. The last time I was clean for six months was probably when I was 15.

Why did people working in stores start saying “welcome in” and why do I hate it so much?

(because it’s redundant and the kind of fake cozy only a marketing type would come up with)

The first time I heard someone say it like that was at the first tv station I worked at. Our sports director would say "Welcome in to Sports Extra!" at the start of our Friday evening sports show. We all thought it was odd. This was 2001, so it's not totally new. He was from Tennessee. Is it maybe a southern thing?

It's awfully weird when you get a Bluesky post that suddenly gets more engagement than all your others put together. And it isn't even one of your good ones.

I hear it A LOT.  Yesterday it was Vitamin Shoppe.  I just want to buy a bucket of protein powder and an energy drink.  Don't hit me with that touchy feely bullshit.

Maybe it's a regional thing.

I haven't heard "welcome in" anywhere that I can remember.

But at least for me, it's calling to mind the shift from simply saying "thank you," to "thank you so much!"

I hate it. It somehow manages to sound more phony than the shorter "thank you" despite adding words to it. I can't figure out why people adopt a slightly whiny tone or raised inflection when saying it. I especially cannot stand the folks who add anywhere between seven and twenty-one extra "u's" to "much" to close out the show. Perhaps it's also the dichotomy between words and body language. How many people say "thank you so much" without so much as looking up from their phone to make eye contact with the person they're saying it to?

I don't know where or when it started, but it has taken over.

The indignant part of me wants answers, but the more nihilistic part understands that no explanation will give me any satisfaction or make it get on my nerves any less.

Like...let me put this in perspective for you. Some random teenage kids knocked a full cup of ice water on me while I was out for a walk yesterday. Seemed pretty intentional, but for no reason other than they were being stupid children. I calmly walked away, didn't even acknowledge them. Part of the reason was it was just water, another was that there is no win for me in confronting people younger and smaller than me, yet another part was that it was warm out and it actually felt kinda good. I was pretty zen about it. I am getting more wound up even thinking about "thank you so much" than I was about the water incident.

I need to know exactly how this happened

Happy to oblige. It was a pretty straightforward incident.

So, I have a pretty long walking route through my city. It usually includes roughly a half-mile stretch through our downtown area, essentially "Main St." though it isn't actually called Main St.

I had just started down that stretch when a group of a few kids, probably Jr. High schoolers or maybe freshmen in high school at the oldest, approached from the other direction. This isn't uncommon, esp. during summer months, so I thought nothing of it. One of them had a Styrofoam cup in his left hand, which would've been the side closest to me. So as they get closer, one of the other kids starts (seemingly) shit-talking his friend. I don't believe it was directed at me, but I can't say for sure. Can't imagine why it would've been; I'd clocked their presence but otherwise did nothing to engage them. So, he then goes to knock the cup out of his friend's hand. But rather than bat it downwards as one would usually do when looking to knock something out of someone's hand, he waited until I got close to them and struck the cup from the bottom, in sort of a 3/4 uppercut motion. This, of course, sent the cup and its contents flying right at me. Bullseye! The group laughs, one of them issues the obligatory "DAYUUUM!" The reaction plus the fact that he hadn't knocked the cup out of his friend's hand at any other point of the walk felt rather intentional to me. Could've been done at any point when another person wasn't approaching.

Thankfully, pro wrestling has taught me a thing or two about no-selling.
