I'm happy for this guy, don't get me wrong, but why are they calling up a guy hitting .194 in AA?

Most likely for the feel good story - since he is replacing Brian Reynolds who is on paternity leave, he is only gonna be up for 3 days and then they will DFA him (and probably re-sign him)

Side note - this is actually the second time Maggi has been called up. The Twins called him up in 2021 but he never played in a game.

BTW - we are entering a brave new world

The two current longest winning streaks in MLB

The Pirates at 7 games (who don't look now are in first)

The Orioles at 6 games

Boy they go on one little win streak and they get drunker than a poet on payday.

Brian Reynolds extends (!) with Pittsburgh.   8/107

This overwrites their current deal and keeps him a Pirate until 2030.  Club option for '31.

It is the largest contract given out in Pirates history

Does not have the opt-out that Reynolds was seeking but they did give him limited no trade protection

From the club perspective, that's not bad. 25 homers and .290 for $13m is a comparative bargain anymore. And he won't be 43 when the contract is done.

either a brand new world or a very old one inhabited by the 1971 & 79 World Series

The Cards sent Jordan Walker down to AAA for because, the only reason that makes sense, is that they are racist

Robbie Ray will now miss the rest of the season as he will be undergoing flexor tendon repair surgery

This guy is a good friend of mine and I can verify everything in this article is true. Have been on several trips with him as well.

and the move to bring Reynolds back is... optioning Canaan Smith-Njigba to AAA. Maggi survives on the roster, but he hasn't played yet.

at least the Cardinals got Matthew Liberatore's 5.97 ERA when they traded Randy Arozarena to Tampa Bay.

Maggi pinch hit for the Pirates tonight, striking out in the bottom of the 8th during an 8-1 victory, so he will finally get his own Baseball-Reference page (instead of being listed as trending and the link going to his BBRef-Minors page)

For the record - one of the strikes against Maggi was due to a pitch clock violation

The internet would like you to believe it was because of the standing ovation he got.

The internet is wrong

The whole “automatic strike because the batter isn’t ready” thing is so extremely subjective and it’s false balance meant to make it look like the burden isn’t completely on pitchers

Pirates Legend Dick Groat has passed away at the age of 92

Pittsburgh had just announced last week that they would be inducting Groat into the team Hall of Fame later this summer

As a reminder - Groat was actually a two sport star who played briefly in the NBA before going into the military. Branch Rickey then threatened him and he switched to baseball full time

They're manipulating service time and he's hitting under .200 his last 26 ABs. Has just 3 walks all year, too. He ain't quite ready yet.

I’m not a Pirates fan but I have the DVD set of the 79 Series just because of how cool that team was

I'm partial to the 1985 team with their coke dealer mascot.

He started at 3B in today’s game.

my favorite way for an org to manipulate service time? demoting someone around the all-star break so they can fall under the threshold before they come back (I don't think you can easily do this with starting pitchers anymore since they have to stay in the minors for longer now)

also, the Royals coincidentally kept Brady Singer in AAA long enough stretching him out to start again last year that it got his free agency bumped back a year

Anyways..

Where's "we're pissed off and frustrated" at on the list of things said by teams when they're going through a 6-20 stretch?

Aaron Judge left last night's game early due to discomfort in his right hip

Judge said after the game he expected to miss a couple of days but he didn't think it was too bad

The cause of the injury appears to be his comically bad slide in Wednesday's game

Not sure how many AL Central fans there are around the board so I might be seeing more Twins games than the usual board user but the Twins just water their infield dirt vigorously. That just came to mind with the Judge injury sliding in Minnesota.

Diamondbacks water their dirt a bit when you consider they play in a retractable roof stadium in Arizona and the rest of the field is turf.
