The Padres are calling up Matt Waldron to start Saturday’s game against the Nats

Why this is note worthy is Waldron will become the first knuckleballer in the bigs in two years

huge news because I don't know who that knuckleballer was in 2021

meanwhile... we got a trade!

Another league average utility infielder - yipee

Since the whole "Shohei to the Mets" stupid trade thing popped up and everyone laughed at it the Angels have been like "OH NO!  We're going to be shitty enough to feasibly trade him by the trade deadline!"

So it turns out that Aaron Judge tore a ligament in his toe and he admitted that because it isn't the most common of injuries, there is a lot of uncertainty how long the recover is.

And just because he wanted to throw the chaos grenade - Aaron Boone admitted that he can't guarantee Judge will return this season

I am nominating this as fan catch of the year. Catching a 420 foot home run with one hand, while leaning over the railing like its nothing. Very impressive.

Well, this game is not going well for the Rockies.

It's 23-0, Angels. . .in the top of the fourth inning.

This being the Angels I'm expecting a spectacular 9th inning collapse.

You literally can't make it up with that team

Friday night

Ohtani was a triple shy of the cycle including he and Trout going back to back in the 5th. Rockies rally with 4 in the 8th to win

Saturday night

LAA scores 25 runs yet Ohtani goes 1 for 7. He was the only Angels starter to not get at least 2 hits

Some notes from that game

Angels set franchise marks in a single game for

  • runs
  • hits
  • margin of victory

They also tied team records for runs and homers in a single inning

The margin of victory is the 3rd largest in MLB history since 1900

Rockies pitcher Chase Anderson gave up back to back to back home runs on three consecutive pitches which, it turns out, is the second time in his career that's happened?!?!?!?!

Oh and then lastly

Quote

1B/3B Mike Moustakas will switch dugouts after being acquired by Los Angeles from Colorado for minor league pitcher Connor Van Scoyoc after the game.

So the running joke on the internet is that this should become a rule. Beat a team that badly and you get to take one of their players

I'm at Coors Field right now with my little league team getting ready for the Little League parade before the game.  All anyone can talk about is yesterdays game.

and the Angels lose the series despite outscoring the Rockies 32-12

Freddie Freeman got his 2000 hit yesterday

He is now the 6th active player to reach that mark (Miguel Cabrera, Joey Votto, Nelson Cruz, Elvis Andrus and Andrew McCutchen are the other 5)

8th player to reach that mark as a Dodger

The Pirates might be wearing the worst baseball uniforms ever.   I mean the old colors are colors but what the fuck is this PGH?   is that a new thing people in Pittsburgh call themselves now

every City Connect uniform -- and every alternate uniform for that matter -- reminds me of the late Scott Weiland's description of his time in the supergroup Velvet Revolver:

"a soulless cash grab"

the city connects are generally the most flagrant ones, though.  The Rockies' "Colorado License Plate" one is probably the least shitty of the one's I've seen but it's clearing a very low bar.

The A's, of course, don't have a City Connect uniform at all, and it's pretty obvious now why they never bothered with one

I recall trading tapes with people in Pittsburgh back a couple decades and they - multiple people - would list their address as "PGH, PA".  It's stupid.

I respectfully disagree.

Meanwhile Shohei Ohtani has 10 K's through 7 and has already hit 2 HR's.

And they're leading.  I confess I am surprised.
