2023 VIDEO GAME CATCH ALL THREAD

Hitman 3 is being turned into Hitman World of Assassination as they are adding access to Hitman 1 and Hitman 2 in the game.

If you already own everything you are good to go (it's a free upgrade on Hitman 3 apparently)

Hitman 1 and Hitman 2 will no longer be available as stand alone games (so one would assume this is bad news for Trophy Hunters)

I am not even gonna try to explain how they are handling the DLC

Anyway - this all happens January 26

Fuck, now I need to see if I have Hitman 3 (I have the other 2)

EDIT: I don't, *BUT*, if you want 3 on PS4/5, right now the Deluxe edition is on sale til Saturday for $28, which is $32 less than the standard edition.

As for the 1 and 2 stuff, right now on at least PS Store, you can "buy" the 1 and 2 Access passes.  1's is the GOTY Edition so probably has everything in it.  2 just has the standard stuff, there's 2 other passes that has the DLC (and that doesn't count 3's DLC)

Started playing High on Life. I say started, because once I got into the alien city hub, I wound up watching the tv with commercials on it for about 30 minutes laughing my ass off.

I also started playing Disco Elysium. At first I thought, man, this game is fucking dope because it felt like I was playing a solo D&D type campaign. But the more I started playing it the more it was basically like a Telltale game, which I'm not super thrilled about. I also have no idea what the hell I'm doing and most of the time it feels like I'm just picking random prompts.

At some point I will get to the PS5 update of the Witcher 3. I have it downloaded. I might also get it on the PC since it's cross save compatible.

The copy of Witcher 3 I downloaded last year on the cheap from MS Store when it was on Games for Gold sale just upgraded to the Complete Edition at no extra charge.  I guess I will have to play it now.

So, as part of the move this weekend we'll be without home internet for two weeks. Now, I managed to ameliorate SOME of the impact by upgrading my Google FI phone data to Unlimited with tethering, but A) that doesn't start until the 11th, and B) they reserve the right to throttle the fuck out of it at 50GB (which is less than one AAA game these days)

So, I decided to start a project idea early. As we all know, the pile of shame/Steam Back Log never shrinks. But I'll make it shrink. I went through all my games, and I'm going to try to reduce the backlog by playing a bunch of games at least for one hour, to see if it hooks me (or "Why the fuck did I buy this in the first place?" in things I actually bought instead of say, humble bundle stuff. This is what I came up with.

Telepath Tactics Liberated
Yes Your Grace
For the King
Tilefinder
Rogue Trader
Marvel Snap
Legends of Kingdom Rush
Wasteland 2
Wasteland 3
Vestaria Saga 1: War of the Scions
Star Dynasties
Realms of Arkania: Star Trail
Low Magic Age
Mad Games Tycoon
Draft Day Sports: Football (Pro/College)
Draft Day Sports: Basketball (pro/College)
Franchise Hockey Manager 9
Cosmic Star Heroine
Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground
Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children
Stellar Tactics
Disco Elysium
The Last Spell
The Legend of Heroes (one of them)
Ferry Fencer F Advent Dark Force
Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark
Tales of Berseria
Road Redemption
Showtime!
City of Gangsters
Company of Crime
DungeonTop: Spell Sword Cards
Into the Breach
Persona 4 golden
Rebel Cops
Sigma Theory
Bomber Crew
Deep Rock Galactic
Fractured Space
Hot Wheels Unleeshed
Iron Harvest
Knights of the Chalice
Symphony of War: THe Nephelim Saga
Citizen Sleeper
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Octopath Traveller
Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire
Soccer Story

Lots of strategy/RPG games in there. Wonder if anything will grab me.

As someone who plays Marvel Snap, DON'T PLAY MARVEL SNAP. It will consume your life. I've been playing and collecting Magic since Unlimited and Revised. I don't think I've ever been quite so addicted to a card game like this. It is digital crack.

Cosmic Star Heroine
Disco Elysium

These are two of my favorite games of the last few years. I haven't completed Disco Elysium, only about 12 hours in maybe, but I love love love it.

Cosmic Star Heroine is a sci-fi love letter to classic 16 bit JRPGs. All of Zeboyd's games are like that, and they're great (and cheap on Steam!). I've said it before, but I've bought CSH three different times and I rarely do that (Switch, digital copy on PS4 and a physical collector's edition).

I love Marvel Snap too, but I'm a Marvel stan so whatever. Once I get this thing up and running on my SteamDeck it's game over, half of my play time on that thing will be with Snap. When I played it for the first time I was hoping Angela would be included but thought it'd mainly be the more well known Marvel characters... nope, she's in there. And boy was I wrong about just known characters being used, too.

Speaking of 16-bit RPG love letters, what's the deal with this Chained Echoes thing the critics are geeking about? Huge Metacritic scores and it's in a genre I keep tabs on but somehow I completely missed it.

I joked at the time I started it last month that I was the first person in the world playing it, since I was further in the game than any guide online. But it got some good early buzz and now its being talked about like its a modern classic. To me its somewhere in the middle, I really enjoyed some things it did, some things are a little annoying, and now that I'm near the end the combat has gotten a little same-y to me. Its still a great game if you are into that genre that I'd recommend, its pretty damn fun.

I have all the DLCs for Hitman 1 & 2 but glad they'll still be playable after January 26. I'm just not looking forward to the 100% on both. There's no Platinum for either but Hitman 3 on PS4 & PS5 have separate trophy lists and Platinums.

Also, I think it'll affect the autopop for DLC trophies in Hitman 3 but don't quote me on that.

a video game forum that i'm a part of creates a "Backlog Chaalenge" thread. you list the games that you want to beat for the year that you've been putting off. it has really helped me focus on playing the games that i want to, rather than deal with choice paralysis while i sit and stare at my shelves of games.

@Andrew POE!

i love keeping up with your Platinum questing. hope you don't mind me asking a few questions.

what got you started down this path? do you have a set number you're after, or a goal to get a certain amount in a period of time?

how do you choose what to go for next?

i see a pretty wide swath of games that you run through, what's your favorite genre of game to play?

1) What started me was....a breakup with a girlfriend. I didn't have anything to do and my work life sucked, so I started to go after a Platinum to cope. I Platinum'ed Sly Cooper and was hooked. Sadly, I haven't gotten another girlfriend since then, but that's fine. I do have a great job now which seems to allow me time to do trophy hunting (when I'm supposed to be working from home), but that doesn't happen as much when I'm working. The set goal I'm after is honestly 500 to 1000 but I'm not sure I'll make it. Ideally, I would like to get 100 platinums in a year, but I'm glad just to get close to 50 (I seem to average about 30 - 40 since I started). What would get me closer to 500 to 1000 platinums would be the easy $1/$2/$3 platinums but I feel guilty every time I do one.

2) How I choose what to go for depends on what's currently on my profile that I want to finish, what I feel like playing and would offer enjoyment, and any pending server shutdowns that will affect whether the Platinum can be obtained. At some point, Borderlands 2 and Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag will see their servers shut down so I'll be doing the stacks for those. Around 2013/2014, I spent about a year working on the online trophies for PS3 games and getting those done and I'll be going back to those games to finish them. I have plans this year to finally do games I've put off - like ICO, Shadow of the Colossus PS3, Heavy Rain, Ratchet & Clank A Crack in Time, Days Gone, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, Devil May Cry 3, and some others.

3) I really like Soulsbourne game since there's an element of patience involved with beating it. I really want to do more JRPGs (I feel I should Platinum Final Fantasy XIII and Persona 4 Golden but it's hard to get motivated for those for me). The ones I have the most fun with are Sony first party games (Sony seem to have figured out how to have their first party games be challenging to Platinum but fun at the same time).

Unless it's changing on the 26th, it's not auto-popping on PS4.

Is pretty good. I decided not to go out for new years,  and beat the game at about 1:30 am. Once i started,  I couldn't really put it down. It's not perfect,  but it felt exactly how it should have to bring back the feelings of the 16-bit era.

I beat my first playthrough of Rogue Legacy 2 on NYE.  On the whole I think it felt a little easier than the first one.  The 3rd and 4th bosses were the only ones that really tripped me up, everyone else only took 1-2 tries to beat.  They stole the heat level system from Hades for the NG+, which was a good choice.

I also burned some PSN credit to get the new Saint's Row and it's a totally cromulent open-world game.  I'd rank it as being just about as good as 3, but doesn't quite have the anarchic charm of 2 or the craziness of 4.  They did improve on the clothing system from 3, at least, so I can play even more dress-up with my boss.

Finally got Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, since it's on a deep sale finally on the PS Store. First impression is that this is a good showcase of what the PS5 can do with the internal SSD. Good stuff, I like it more than the first one and I really enjoyed that one.

Also downloaded Code Vein on the SteamDeck, and oh boy this is basically Anime Dark Souls. And whoever said I would spend most of my time in the character creator: spot on! Well, I only fiddled with it for about 20 minutes, but still. Between this, and DOOM Eternal, I'm probably set for what video games I'll play at work for a good little bit.

After I beat DOOM Eternal + the two DLCs, I think I'll probably move onto Death Stranding since Epic gave it away for free and I have the Heroic Launcher on the SteamDeck.

Fuck, I played through Disco Elysium at least three times now, maybe four? I'm no trophy hunter but it's one I want to Platinum just so I see as much of it as I possibly can.

Gotten most of the centrist and socialist shit done, as well as Apocalypse Cop which just sounds incredible. However, I'm not looking forward to being a fascist...

I caved and picked up a Western Digital 2TB 850 drive for my PS5 yesterday. Being able to download and install at will was pretty nice. Install was pretty straight forward as well.

Hopefully, I will not have to stress over deleting something for awhile to add something new.

Yeah - I think my upcoming birthday present to myself is buying some sort of external HD for my PS5 as despite having it less than a month, I am already terrified about having space issues.

I caved on the internal, but I price matched amazon at best buy and then used $15 in rewards points. $185 was a lot to spend on an HD, but I justified it given some other health choices I'm making for the month.
