Middle Tennessee is in the Hawaii Bowl this year and played in the Bahamas Bowl last year.

Who knew playing consistent .500 football in Conference USA could be your ticket to paradise.

"The World Famous MTSU Blue Raiders" slogan is right there, PR folks!

Since I had way to much time this morning here's what this year's post season would look like using the set-up from 1982, the match-ups would have been set once the regular season was over, not a week or two before Thanksgiving which was the norm back then.

January 2

Sugar Bowl: #1 Georgia (SEC Champ) vs. #3 TCU (At-Large), 8PM ABC. TCU's loss in the Big 12 Championship Game free's them up to play for the National Championship. A Georgia win would give them at minimum a share of the National Championship, TCU would need a win and Michigan loss in the Rose.

Orange Bowl: #11 Kansas State (Big 12 Champ) vs, #5 Alabama (At-Large), 8PM NBC. The Big 12 is a continuation of the Big 8 so their champ goes to the Orange.

Rose Bowl: #2 Michigan (Big 10 Champ) vs. #7 Utah (PAC-12 Champ), 5PM NBC. A Michigan win and Georgia loss gives the Wolverines an undisputed National Championship, but a close win against Utah and a big Georgia win over TCU would keep Michigan #2 in both polls.

Cotton Bowl Classic: #20 Texas (At-Large) vs. #6 Tennessee (At-Large), 1:30PM CBS. Since the SWC is long gone the Cotton goes to two at-larges.

Fiesta Bowl: #4 Ohio State (At-Large) vs. #8 USC (At-Large), 1:30PM NBC. Both Ohio State and USC would have passed on the waning Cotton Bowl for the up and coming Fiesta Bowl.

December 31

Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl: #14 Tulane vs. #13 Florida State, 7PM ESPN.

Peach Bowl: #17 LSU vs. #15 Oregon, 3PM CBS.

Hall of Fame Classic: #20 South Carolina vs. Illinois, 1PM ESPN. This is what became the Outback Bowl in Tampa, it was played in Birmingham back then.

December 30

Gator Bowl: #10 Clemson vs. #9 Penn State, 9PM ABC. The Gator was the top non-New Years Day bowl game back then. Also, the ACC didn't have an auto-bid for their champ in 1982.

December 29

Liberty Bowl: #24 Mississippi State vs. North Carolina, 7PM USA Network.

December 26

Aloha Bowl: #12 Washington vs. #19 Notre Dame, 9PM ESPN.

Sun Bowl: #18 UCLA vs. Pitt, 2PM CBS. Same match-up as this year.

December 17

Tangerine Bowl: #25 NC State vs. Purdue, 8PM Mizlou.

California Bowl: Boise State vs. Toledo (MAC Champ), 4PM ESPN.

December 16

Holiday Bowl: Fresno State (MTN West Champ) vs. #22 UTSA, 9PM ESPN. The MTN West basically took over for the WAC as the #2 conference in the west, so their champ goes to San Diego.

December 10

Indepence Bowl: Ole Miss vs. #17 Oregon State, 8PM ESPN.

As a side note, how insane is it that Ohio lost at wide receiver the tenth and eleventh picks in the NFL draft, then had the overwhelming favorite for the Biletnikoff aware get hurt in week one, only appear in three games with five catches... And they still have pretty much hands down the best wide receiver group in the nation, and somebody else who is almost certainly going to win the Biletnikoff?

The pain of being an Ohio State fan is that they generally have an overwhelming talent advantage and somehow still lose at least one stupid game. The entire rivalry with Michigan is based on Ohio breeding so many football players that some escape and play up north. Every time Ohio State loses to Michigan it is almost always more of an indictment of Ohio State's execution than Michigan's excellence.

Ohio has kind of slipped into the issues that Michigan had under Harbaugh for 5 years. That is, well, they were poorly coached. Still won a lot because of the huge talent advantage in nearly every game but got beat up when the talent was even sort of close. Michigan fired their OC & DC and flipped the script. Ohio needs to think about doing the same, at least on defense. Michigan got 349 yards on 5 plays against them. That should never happen with the horses that Ohio can recruit.

I mean they always have a surplus of talent, but there's something else when you think about the 2021 team having Wilson, Olave, Smith-Njigba, Harrison Jr, and Egbuka. That's at least four guys who either were or will be first round picks, and a fifth who might be.

This is not nearly a crazy as the fact that the best season a college quarterback ever had happened because Joe Burrow couldn't get any playing time at Ohio State. None have turned into great pros, but their quarterback run has been pretty incredible,  not to mention their run of defensive lineman and defensive backs.  Alabama has the jewelry, but Ohio State's run as a powerhouse has been longer with as much of a talent advantage.  When they lose its their fault almost 100% of the time.

So I've been thinking through the best/worst case scenarios for Michigan, and this is my list from best possible outcome to worst

1. Beat Ohio to win the national title - obviously

2. Beat Georgia to win the national title - not quite as emphatically historic, but still, getting somewhere between the 12th (claimed) and 17th (selected) natty in school history would be great.

3. Lose to Georgia in the NCG - This would suck, but there's no shame in losing to the best. Always next year.

4. Get upset by TCU in the semis - Michigan has a long history of really good teams losing winnable bowl games, and this would be amongst the most heartbreaking.

5. Lose the NCG to Satan.

I’m guessing that the Reliaquest Bowl isn’t under any threat of being cancelled or changed because Mike Leach seems like the sort of coach that would want his team to play a bowl game a few weeks after his death. Sorry if this is a bad time to mention Mississippi State’s Bowl Game.

State confirmed they're playing. And cowbells will be allowed so that joint is going to be a madhouse.

As an Illini fan, this really feels like a no-win and I'm torn right down the middle... I want them to win but they're going to be the biggest heels ever to the world at large, no matter the result.

Well the upside is that the bowl game is on ESPN2 on a Monday afternoon at the same time as two other bowl games (LSU/Purdue and Tulane/USC) even if it’s a Monday that more people than usual get off of work. So it’s not gonna be a prime time game on December 22nd when there’ll be nearly nothing else going on and the near full sports fan focus is on the game.

It’s one of those games where one could understand it if the outcome went either way. Like if the Cavs had qualified for a bowl game and decided to play after the murders a month ago.

Don't know if anyone else is tracking the FCS playoffs, but NDSU is down 16-0 to Incarnate Word seven minutes into the game. In Fargo.

Never mind, NDSU has finally gotten to the stadium and it's 17-16 Bison with less than a minute left in the first half.

Southern Miss's Frank Gore Jr (yes you are reading that right) rushed for 329 yards last night which is a NCAA bowl record

He had 3 rushing TDs AND threw for another one since apparently Rice had no idea what the concept of defense was

South Dakota State handled Montana State yesterday, so it's an all-Dakota, all-Valley battle for the FCS championship as they face NDSU in Frisco on January 8. No word if the Dakota Marker will be up for grabs as well.

So Middle Tennessee wins the Hawaii Bowl yesterday with a grand total rushing of -66 yards.   😳

Yeah, that's what 7 sacks and basically no actual rushing yards will do.

For those who don't know, the NCAA counts sacks against the rushing numbers for the quarterback.
