Bret Hart wearing very special ring attire, pink and black with orange vs. Steve Austin at the 1996 Survivor Series in a ***** match. Bret Hart also did a top rope elbow rather than the traditional middle rope one he used. Great finish protecting the Stone Cold Stunner with Austin losing time moving Bret away from the ropes, having to bring back the Million Dollar Dream and Bret using the WrestleMania VIII finish kicking back on the top turnbuckle to get the three count.

i'm just gonna imagine that Gentleman Ben wore a tux to the ring.

The results of that card, for the record:

Quote
  • Harley Race over Dory Funk Jr via reversed decision in 23 minutes
  • Bulldog Bob Brown over Black Angus in 3 falls
  • Kit Conway, Mike George & Jim Brunzell over Tokyo Joe (Mr. Hito), Baron Scicluna, and Lord Alfred Hayes (Conway pinned Joe)
  • Steve Bolus pinned Taro Kabayoshi (Kuniaki Kobayashi)
  • Gentleman Ben defeated Nature Boy Kirby
  • Danny Little Bear defeated Bob Orton

The next week, Gentleman Ben worked a tag team match teaming with Steve Bolus vs Tokyo Joe and Taro Kabayoshi. Yes. The wrestling bear was in a tag team match.

Central States brought in the McGuire Twins in October 1973 and teamed them against Tokyo Joe and The Great Togo (Haruka Eigen). I suspect the bear had a better workrate than the McGuires. They brought in the McGuires and also put Man Mountain Mike on the card for a historic night of fat people.

yeah, Kit Conway was Tiger Conway Jr

Looking at CageMatch results, late-1973 Central States/KC was in a period in-between manager Percival A. Friend leaving the area, and Percy Pringle arriving in the area.

By Percy Pringle, I mean... tonight's VICE TV star No Class Bobby Bass as Percy Pringle.

At first I was skeptical at this part of Danny Little Bear's Wikipedia entry:

Quote

His feuds with Yasu Fuji & Chati Yokochi, Black Angus Campbell and manager Percival A. Friend and Eduardo Miguel Perez were the cause of frequent riots and arrests in the St. Joseph-Kansas City area during the summer of 1972.

then... details!

Quote

He and The Stomper would soon begin pursuing the NWA North American Tag Team Champions losing to them in a Texas Death Match on May 12. As the end of the match, as Danny Little Bear was about to pass out from a nervehold submission hold applied by Yasu Fuji, local and state police had to restrain several fans from entering the ring.

(...)

During this time, he began feuding with Black Angus Campbell over the NWA Central States Heavyweight Championship and soon lost the title to Campbell in Kansas City. Following the match, Campbell and his manager Percival A. Friend had to leave the arena under a police escort as fights started breaking out in the crowd.

A later rematch against Campbell in St. Joseph, Missouri resulted in a small riot that occurred when two fans attacked Campbell's manager Percival A. Friend breaking his nose and attempting to enter the ring on behalf of Danny Little Bear. However, police having been assigned to the auditorium, the fans were stopped before they could get to Campbell although promoter Gust Karras chose not to pursue charges against them.

(...)

Near the end of the match, several fans began storming the ring while Danny Little Bear faced The Destroyer. Police were able to prevent fans from entering the ring however and eventually arrested six fans before the crowd calmed down

And no.. the Destroyer in this case wasn't Dick Beyer, it was Stan Vachon (who, as I noted in the Vice thread about the Vachon/LeDuc matchups, is not a real Vachon)

Hopefully the fans weren't demanding refunds when they realized that Danny Little Bear was the special ref for Race/Funk instead of having the Wrestling Bear work as the referee.

searching through NewsBank and the Star did a story in September 1972 about two old women who were identical twins and wrestling fanatics. They once offered Danny Little Bear an ice cream stick to jab Harley Race, and they believed it was mostly real except for some of the blood.

Most of the sources on the Danny Little Bear entry were Percival Friend website posts from the 2000s. I think some wrestling heels, after a point, grow to miss the idea of people trying to stab them.

The Percival Friend loaded briefcase is a thing which was mentioned in the annals of old timey wrestling stuff that my dad insists he saw back then.

49 minutes ago, Wee Bey said:

Nowadays Kawada (32nd Champion era) and Kento (62nd champion era) are tied at record consecutive 10 defenses in a row.

Mitsuharu Misawa's record 705 days (10th champion era) is still the longest reign.

I mentioned this in the Indy thread, the cast of Riverdale showed up at the BOOM Pro Wrestling show in Vancouver Saturday night where I was the ring announcer and timekeeper. Here's Cole Sprause and I think Casey Cott with the new Vancouver City Champion Brady Malibu after the show. KJ Apa and a bunch of other from the show were there as well.
