zendragon
That's kinda what I was hoping the case to be, independent contractors be damned these companies should do a better job of looking after ther ipeople. The idea of some one coming back after a serious neck injury makes me think about The Dynamite Kid spending his final days confined to a wheelchair
zendragon
https://www.allelitewrestling.com/post/jon-moxley-signs-five-year-extension-with-aew-expanding-roles-into-mentorship-and-coaching?fbclid=IwAR3oGyhwCSfpFr9gGC1F9d1l0fQlqYzfhg2gKN9Fzin0t0arXMd_BFcjr2E Quote October 7, 2022 – AEW CEO, GM and Head of Creative Tony Khan announced that AEW World Champion Jon Moxley has signed a five-year contract extension. This ensures that one of professional wrestling’s top stars will remain in All Elite Wrestling through 2027, while expanding his responsibilities to include mentoring and coaching talent. Moving forward, Moxley will work exclusively for AEW and its international partners, including New Japan Pro Wrestling, where he is a two-time IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion. Moxley has had an incredible run in 2022, most recently recapturing the AEW World Championship at "AEW: Dynamite GRAND SLAM” against Bryan Danielson, pitting the Blackpool Combat Club’s top stars against one another for the grandest prize in professional wrestling. He defends the AEW World Championship next against Hangman Adam Page in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, on Oct. 18 on a special Tuesday edition of “AEW: Dynamite,” live on TBS at 8 p.m. ET. Moxley will kick off the action on tonight’s live episode of “AEW: Rampage,” the first night of year four of AEW on TNT at 10 p.m. ET / 9 p.m. CT. “Jon Moxley is on the best run of his already legendary career, and this five-year extension ensures that he was not only here for AEW’s meteoric rise, but also remains a key part of the sustained success we’re witnessing, just days after the three-year anniversary show for ‘AEW: Dynamite,’” said Tony Khan. “Jon is a great world champion for us in his third reign. His wrestling mind is invaluable, and our roster is lucky to have the opportunity to utilize him as a mentor and a coach as we continue to build the stars of today and tomorrow.” “I love AEW and the spirit of both the company and its fans,” said Jon Moxley. “I cherish our shared passion for the sport of professional wrestling, and I’m going to dedicate everything I have in mind, body and spirit to helping AEW be the best it can be going forward.”

Wasn't Tony Kahn trying to book him in a big match at Forbidden Door? I think Andrade's morale would be alot better at this point if it happened. NJPW fits him much better than AEW or WWE but obviously I see why he'd rather go back to WWE especially under Hunters rule plus the have a some other really good Luchadores in WWE right now that I definitely see Hunter giving some shine on the main roster finally. Even when he was Regulated to just working the preshows with Angel Garza and Swerve he was having some of my favorite matches of the night. I was excited about him going to AEW. I thought he would have been the Mexican Will Osprey and just having Match of the Year.

kafkonia
I don't have much time for Sammy, but I'd like to think that most of us can recognize that Andrade's "if you have a problem with me, settle it in the ring" take is wrong on multiple levels. That's what leads to New Jack trying to kill Vic Grimes by throwing him off a balcony.

It's a scaffold match and Jack was going over most likely. Vic was going to have get thrown anyway. 2. If you look how they put that all together with all the tables kinda willy nilly stacked all over the place with the ring underneath, there is virtually no way for Vic to fall where he WOULDN'T hurt himself. Vic back in his indy days at least was a big guy who could move, but this is different than doing a big man moonsault. You have to figure out a way to take a bump from that height and not break your neck. Had that happened in ECW where they've done a scaffold match and no one really got seriously hurt, I would believe Jack on that. However, I put this on XPW being run by rinky dink amateurs who only knew about producing gonzo pornography. IMO that was Jack capitalizing on and savoring a golden opportunity.

You're mixing up two different things - Vic Grimes fucked up a balcony spot they were supposed to do together in ECW, and as a result Jack split his head open on the concrete, causing him permanent blindness. Jack throwing Vic Grimes off the scaffold in XPW was a receipt because Grimes never called to check on him or apologize.
odessasteps
Isn't the story that Tommy Dreamer just missed hitting his head on something when he took the table bumps off the scaffold from the chokeslam?

That's what leads to New Jack trying to kill Vic Grimes by throwing him off a balcony. I may have missed a quote but the thing I heard him say 'If someone hits you hard, you hit them back just as hard' is pretty much verbatim what I was told by a pretty reputable wrestling trainer in the UK (and very nice guy in my experience, I hope he wouldn't mind me saying) - mind you, I mean he also said if they hit you soft, then you also hit them back hard. So on that point at any rate, I don't think Andrade was saying anything controversial there. And say in method acting, if there's 'heat' between two actors then that can potentially be used in a scene to good effect - not always of course, but if they're fighting in the scene then this is probably what they would try to do. Although I don't think they ever came to blows, Kidman publicly called out Vampiro as an unsafe worker in WCW and Vampiro's response was basically that Kidman and 3/4 of the roster were pussies. Vampiro iirc partly got pushed because Rick Steiner roughed him up pretty good on TV and he never complained about it. Tbf the business has changed since those times, but also bear in mind that a lot of the current popular style in both AEW and WWE is somewhat predicated on what might be very loosely called 'British Strong Style' (BCC, Sheamus vs Gunther) - rightly or wrongly, that seems to be what a lot of people want to watch, and frankly it's a style quite a lot of workers seem to want to do. Now Sammy might not like that, but bear in mind that probably there's quite a lot of potential wrestlers that might not feel that keen about basing for his not entirely safe aerial offence or, indeed, indulging credibility-destroying shit like his springboard cutter. And indeed he doesn't seem to have people queuing up to work with him.

odessasteps
Anecdotally, it seems like you can have guys who were friends that would potato each other if need be if the situation warranted it. I'm thinking of the Austin/Bossman story. And you used to have guys who worked stiff and wanted you to stiff them back, notably Johnny Valentine. One of the reasons he loved working w Wahoo. If you think about though, considering it's ECW where chairshots to the head unprotected was encouraged, that scaffold match was about as a safe as you make it. Given that Heyman does have Memphis roots where they did scaffold matches every now and again, it does make sense he managed to gimmick it where Brian Lee was basically taking bumps straight through tables that more than likely broke his fall. IIRC he basically kinda hilariously slide through the tables. I don't think Rob Black had any prerequisite knowledge or common sense to do something like that where the person who had to take the bump was protected and would at worst suffer some minor bruises. As someone who first got on the internet right when XPW started to gain a little buzz and some traction online, they did a LOT of reckless shit even compared to ECW. That's why I only have so much tolerance for certain types of death matches. If there is a real compelling story in the match, I can watch damn near anything. XPW just eschewed storytelling and went straight to nonsensical mutilation fests.

The Uncensored 1996 match between Regal and Finlay where Finlay legit fucked Regal's shit up is probably the biggest example of, "if these two guys didn't know each other really well, this would lead to a shoot fight backstage". And that wasn't even the craziest match they had in WCW. They had a match on Nitro in the parking lot where IIRC both Regal and Finlay go through a windshield on some proto Zona 23 shit and get cut up.

The point was more about throwing someone off of a high place as a receipt, not so much which specific high place he was being thrown from. Also I suppose there's a distinction to be made between that and, say, Shamrock/Vader or Brock/Strowman, where it happens in the heat of the moment. "If a guy hits you hard, hit him back hard" is one thing because adrenaline is flowing and all. But "If a guy hits you hard, don't complain, stew about it until you get the chance for revenge" is different. Because then the guy you got revenge on will stew about it until he gets the chance to get revenge. And then you'll stew about it, etc. Don't get me wrong - nobody's holding Sammy out as a paragon of working safely. We all saw that Ruby Soho spot. odessasteps
Since it wasn't mentioned it, don't forget the whole strong style/fighting spirit thing, especially in a company full of guys with both Japanese experience and 80s/90s Puro Fandom (DB, Kingston, ...).
StretchMediatedHypertrophy
Guess I am on mute lol, but yeah it's hard to imagine Sammy getting a lot of sympathy in that locker room complaining about stiffness - which is probably why he didn't bring it up there but then ended up venting at an inopportune moment. Of course how stiff it is ok to be is a very difficult question for an outsider to be able to wade into, which is why Tony Khan needs someone to deal with that. I guess this is where Mox now comes in.
