I guess its conceivable since they would have both been in the AWA in 73/74, but Stevens would have also been there and could have taught him as well. Is there any footage of Flair in the AWA so we could get a sense of when he started doing it?

There’s this early ‘74 match against Chris Taylor; no corner flip but he does like taking turnbuckles:

    And then in 1976 Mid-Atlantic there’s a corner flip:

Apparently the American kids only (lol) got 26 hits too.  I'm not sure if that makes this more or less impressive.

That reminds me of a Little League World Series final way back when in the late '80s, where the American pitcher was getting shelled by Taiwan in the first inning, and his dad/manager left him in the game for another inning-and-a-half until he was completely destroyed 21-1.

That said...I'm sure there are IP minimums that would effectively neuter this conversation, but if he goes to LA, SF, or somewhere else in the NL...  could he win the Cy Young in both leagues?

I don't think there are innings minimums for BBWAA awards, so sure!

Sort of.  They're no longer doing box scores, stats, game stories, or TV listings.  The reason being they sold off their printing presses and with the contracted printers there's a 3PM(!) press time.

They should just be an evening edition paper, then.

  5. I don’t have the game but am curious - couple of questions:

    1) What happens if you deliberately lose every match in Road to Elite mode?

    2) Is it possible to get a low-star/DUD match rating? Like, if you kept slapping on a headlock for 5 minutes and then got counted out, or something?

I feel like Jon Anderson's transformation from his days as the front man of prog rock band Yes into Strongman in NJPW was somehow EVEN MORE startling

Is it really startling, though? I mean - it can happen to you, it can happen to me, it can happen to everyone eventually…

  7. I propose that we use a closed-system instance of the ChatGPT AI and train it on DEAN's posts/DVDVR writings/etc. We then give this to Tony Khan, and the DEANBot singularity can then be an eternal AEW Commissioner that makes rulings and pronouncements on TV.

    An in-context example:

BCC attacks Elite in the ring; both groups fight each other

Booming voice heard over PA: "HI~!"

"If There is Something" by Roxy Music begins to play; everyone in the ring stops fighting and looks around in confusion

A circa-1980s high-school heavy-duty audio-visual cart with a large tube Zenith television perched on top self-propels itself onto the entrance ramp. There is a Max-Headroom-esque animated figure on its tv screen. This is AEW Commissioner DEANBot.

DEANBot: If it's a FIGHT that you all want, then you can all take an ass-beating like CHAMPS! I want to see you beat the CRUD out of each other. You GET ALLLLLLLL THIS. BLOOD & GUTS! RIGHT NOW!

A referee sprints into the ring, and the Blood & Guts cage begins to lower.

DEANBot: I AM DEAN. AEW RULES THE [expletive bleeped] WORLD~!

DEANBot's AV cart squeakily wheels an exit to the back.

  8. I’m just chiming in very late on the “could this wrestler beat up my dad” tangent to say that the entire roster could, but as for his dad - my deceased grandfather? 5’8”, maybe 175 lbs., but a man who punched out his commanding officer during the war, and then bus drivers and cops in peacetime, and physically threw an insurance adjuster off of the front porch of his rowhouse down to the sidewalk (clearing a flight of steps)? The guy into slugged it out with his oldest brother after the funeral of their father?  I think he’d be AEW champion for life.

Jesus; I think I just talked myself into Orange Cassidy legitimately being a realistic AEW champion.

  9. If we go back further into what-if scenarios: if Barry Windham doesn’t jump to the WWF in 1984 and instead stays in Mid-Atlantic with Dusty, Magnum most likely stays in Mid-South at least another year, and I can easily see Vince throwing money at him in late ‘85/early ‘86 - him against Savage for the IC title would have been terrific.

a Magnum TA vs Undertaker match has some potential. TA does the Belly to Belly but Taker sits up and TA has to dig deep to find something to put the Undertaker down

Heel turn by TA as he smashes Undertaker in the lower back with the urn, then holds it against Taker’s back and belly-to-bellies him onto the urn. Taker suffers lower back pain so severe that he can’t do the zombie sit up.

Ha, my partner works in the building next door to you.  He stayed home today though.  jfc it's looking like Blade Runner out there.

Yeah, I keep expecting to see an ad projected onto the buildings that says a new life awaits me in the off-world colonies.
