  1. That's one I've been meaning to see. A few people talked about the comparisons between it and The Town when that came out a few years ago.
  2. Zach Galifianakis before he decided to become unrecognizable.
  3. I decided to start finishing Entourage (I quit somewhere in Season 6) by just restarting season six since it's something that I can knock out as I have 20-30 minutes to spare on a lunch-break. I am three episodes back into my restart of the season, and it reminded me just how bad this show was getting towards the end. It's still light, superficial fun but I find myself shaking my head and rolling my eyes with it now. Although, I am sure some of that is maturing from watching the show at 21-22 to now being 28 in two weeks.
  4. Cena winning the title match and Rusev winning the Rumble almost felt like the smarter booking last night. You could even have Rusev win the title and go on a year long reign of terror before setting up Roman to be the guy to finally stop him at Wrestlemania next year. Then you would have developed a true star. Oh well, this is Vince's hill to die on I guess.
  5. NBC already tried this--and it was called KINGS, ironically enough. I keep meaning to run through KINGS short run. I heard it was pretty solid.
  6. I loved Summer Hours, but I still need to work through Carlos. Also, Something in the Air never hit my radar.
  7. I think I would enjoy David Lynch's Ferguson a lot more even though I would have no idea what the fuck was going on. Especially during the scenes where the police officers wear rabbit masks. I think Kathryn Bigelow could make an interesting one. I mean I feel like she was pretty objective with the Zero Dark Thirty material; however, I personally don't feel that Ferguson is something that needs a film or documentary made about it. One will probably be made because 1) agenda and 2) someone might convince some studio head that there is money or prestige to be had there, but I think it's something that's best just left alone.
  8. I completely understand this criticism because you're right. It is a little disingenuous to try and capitalize from your experiences related to serving your country especially while your country is still manning operations over in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's one thing for a vet to write a tell-all book 10-15 years after major operations have ceased there. It's another thing to feel that you have a certain notoriety to capitalize on a moment. I am about as Pro-Capitalism as you'll find, but I can see where certain lines need to be drawn. This is definitely one of them. Also, keep in mind that the screenwriter was initially writing this project for Spielberg, and Spielberg scripts are rarely ones to wrestle with tougher subject matter barring a few small exceptions. Even then, I think Spielberg is usually more fascinated with the story than the subtext.
  9. With it on Netflix starting Saturday, I am sure that anyone else that cared to see it probably will within the next week or two.
  10. I think that's fair when you leave it at that. I think my comments are more aimed towards the potshots taken at the film, and I think there's just a lot that could be said about that particular sect. From a film buff's perspective, I'm expecting a movie that feels like Oscar bait and really should not have been in the Best picture discussion while remaining a perfectly okay film.
  11. The producer for American Sniper apparently tweeted about the fake baby thing too before it became a controversy. He said that the real baby was sick with a fever, and the backup baby no-showed. Clint looked at him and said "give me the doll, kid." Given the understandably strict regulations when dealing with children and infants in Hollywood. I would not consider that something we should be starkly critical about. I hope to see the movie this weekend; however, I am amused by the outrage over it from people watching it from a (mostly) political prism. It's something I can't comment on here without it being a "common sense" perspective and viewed as too political for this board, so I'll leave it be.
  12. I wish I could make the trip to Arkansas in June. The Wakarusa lineup is unbelievably strong. It's only lacking My Morning Jacket to be 100% perfect for the crowd it's attracting.
  13. If they end up backing out on the Reigns winning the Rumble thing, what do you do? I for some reason see him getting stuck in a six man tag that would cover a lot of blend-over feuds: Orton/Reigns/Ambrose vs. Rollins/Kane/Show
  14. I thought it was God-Awful. Watch Under The Skin instead if you want your fill of ScarJo nudity and want to watch a decent film at the same time. Also on Amazon, free if you're a prime member. Well if boobies are key then there are two issues. ScarJo has no nude scenes in Lucy, but her nude scenes in Under The Skin are not arousing to say the least.. They are downright antiseptic, alien, and disturbing TBH, but that is the whole point of the movie. It is an excellent movie. Although they're different in a lot of ways, ScarJo's performances in Under the Skin and Her are just wonderful companion pieces to each other. One is disconnected and hollow but also physically there and very much a visible fantasy. The other is connected, engaged, and charming to its protagonist but represents nothing more than an invisible fantasy.
  15. I blame Selma being snubbed 100% on the marketing for it. I think most Academy voters received their screeners for it after they had turned in their ballots. If it wasn't for that, I think that your actor and your director get nominated. Also, I think the flaw in these awards shows is that they try to force all of the prestige stuff out right before Award's season, which forces voters to binge watch so much stuff. It's like Critics that cover Sundance, Cannes, or TIFF. Once you've seen so many movies in a condensed period of time, you're kind of numb towards everything.
  16. Kate Hudson is also one of the earliest versions of the Manic-Pixie Dream Girl which became a big thing throughout the aughts. A girl I had a crush on for years shares a lot of Penny Lane's characteristics. I was exposed to that film 8-9 years ago. I was the right age for it, and I saw it as my music and film taste was still evolving. That soundtrack alone had me grinning from ear to ear the entire film. I am not sure that I have ever seen the theatrical cut of that movie, but the Director's cut is wonderful. Also, the "Tiny Dancer" scene is one of my favorite "sing-along scenes" in film. It's right up there with "Bohemian Rhapsody" in Wayne's World for me, and Almost Famous is an infinitely better film than Wayne's World.
  17. I watched a few films over the weekend that really helped in shaping out my list to where I feel that it'd be respectable if I did not watch anything else prior to balloting. One film I really want to place on everyone's radar is the below film. I am pasting a brief blurb I posted about it on my Letterboxd account. Ida - I can throw many adjectives at Ida for which it rightfully deserves: gorgeous, effective, engaging. Ida explores and ultimately wrestles with a platter of ideas at the viewer while not wasting a single frame and says a multitude while rationing the film's dialog. How does Poland move past the atrocities of the Holocaust? How can Ida stay steadfast with her faith now that she's faced with a new history and new temptations? I like the decision to keep the camera still for most of the film until its final moments. It jars the viewer into an uncertain world that Europe and Ida must face ahead.
  18. My understanding was that the Bobbleheads had a Dead influence, but I could be wrong there.
  19. There was a report that Roo offered the Dead members 3 Million to do Roo, which would have been a nice excuse to bust back out the Bobbleheads they apparently got rid of last year. I loved those Bobble heads. They were the perfect landmark for meeting spots.
  20. Even though I am by no means a Dead guy, I kind of hate that Bonnaroo didn't secure the Dead reunion. It would definitely surpass our current headliner situation. Also, other southeast festivals dropped their lineups. Shaky Knees is a festival that understands its audience and released a rad lineup. Big Guava in Tampa uses a lot of those same artists plus Passion Pit, and Counterpoint just sounds like a chaotic blur of Jam Bands and EDM. The Price-point and shorter drive to Counterpoint has me interested as well. Shaky Knees is really the most friendly lineup to me, but I understand they are in a bad venue for a third year in a row. Can they really not justify a full weekend in Piedmont Park or Centennial without charging an arm and a leg?
  21. I still have not finished watching the final season.

    OSCARS 2015

Let's not get into immediate Hyperbole. I bet if you run through the list of all of them, you would find some worse ones. For example, I was just reminded that Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was nominated for 2011.
  23. I'm about halfway through this thing...if quirky's not your thing, stay far, FAR away from it. I mean, the movie opens with a guy cooking along to a chef on TV who reaches through the screen and helps him, there's a guy in a mouse costume playing a mouse who lives in their house, and when the doorbell rings, it comes to life crawls around the floor until it gets smushed by a frying pan. And that's in the first five minutes or so! Gondry without any studio funding can be way out there. I think the last thing of his that I watched and never got around to finishing was The Science of Sleep, which was another quirky film. The last film o his I enjoyed was Be Kind Rewind.

    True Detective

Sandler's in both the newest Jason Reitman and Thomas McCarthy movies. (The McCarthy one is supposed to be bad, though.) The Reitman one is supposedly not much better, and I think you can rent it through VOD if not now before the end of the month.
  25. The rumor is both he and Deadmau5 are going unopposed on the main stage, which probably would mean a healthy nap for myself if I go.
