  1. What is this 9 inning bullshit? C'mon Royals. Not even trying.
  2. There are a lot of good teams this year, I just don't see anyone standing out as elite right now. Everybody has a significant hole or two. Mississippi State has all the heat right now, but I want to see more from them before we annoint them. I mean, it's a good sign for them that they haven't choked against two ranked SEC teams like they always have, but I mean...Arkansas took A&M to the wire last week, and everybody who's good on offense scores a ton on A&M. And as for LSU...well, look at what Auburn is doing to them right now. This might be the worst LSU team since I don't remember when. Yeah. I suppose 'a lot of good teams, no great ones' might be a better way to put it. And these things usually do sort themselves out. On Miss St., I do think they've got a loss or two coming. Of course, the winner of the SEC West probably will have a loss or two anyway. Could be interesting to see how forgiving the selection committee might be towards a hypothetical SEC champ that has two losses, but would have necessarily beaten multiple other top 10 teams on the way. The chaos up top - at least thus far - would favor them. The fewer undefeateds there are, the better it looks.
  3. Alabama and Oregon have now lost this week. Oklahoma's still down. Florida State looks shaky at best. Who is good this year? Are we headed for an Arizona/Mississippi State national title game? (The Royals are apparently going on an undefeated World Series run, comprised entirely of 11 inning games. I'm prepared to believe anything.)
  4. HOSMER. I will keep punching the air and yelling BASEBALL as loud as I can because coherent thought has left me and the dogs are well and truly convinced that I'm now fighting some sort of invisible demon creature. Update: Royals win forever.
  5. The Royals will play postseason baseball forever now, apparently. My dogs hate this.
  6. I've always had an irrational fondness for shit weather games in which teams just awkwardly smash into each other for an hour, so I'm total agreement. The what about the other two hours? *An hour of game time. Were the excess only two hours, I'd be happy.

  8. I got 26 years (can't count the 3 I wasn't alive for) of no playoff baseball, and now extra innings in back to back games. Free baseball! It's like getting a free dessert because the server forgot to enter your order... for 2 hours. And holy shit, we won game one with Vargas matching up against Weaver. Ventura and Shields to follow. What is happening?
  9. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/how-jarrod-dyson-stole-the-biggest-base-of-his-life/ A great look at last night's steals, with a special emphasis on the second to last.
  10. Chalmers in '08 and the shootout in the MLS finals last year both won championships, so objectively I can't put this at the top of my "coolest sports moments" list. But fuck, it's right there. And I get to go to work in Bill James' old canning factory - which is now a converted office building - tomorrow. Baseball!
  11. I am at this game, and I don't believe any of it.
  12. It wouldn't excite the fanbase, but they should look to the FCS or even Div 2 ranks and find a coach with an oddball offense who can generate points without great players. I recommend Willie Fritz. In his first year at Georia Southern after a successful run at Sam Houston State. I wanted him for Southern Miss last go round. The fanbase is moribund. At this point, the ghost of <insert legendary coach of choice here> wouldn't move the needle. From the DII ranks, the name I've heard a couple times is Bob Stitt, head coach at Colorado School of Mines. Apparently he runs some inventive offense, but obviously I don't know much. Googling Fritz, he has some Kansas ties (which people here care too much about), and obviously has recruited Texas. So at first blush, I like that idea. But, whatever. That's probably enough KU football discussion for now.
  13. I was a student that year, and I'm still not convinced it actually happened. Moreover, I'm not convinced it represents a realistic ceiling. Weak non-con, avoided Texas/OU with the old split schedule, OSU/A&M were down, Baylor was still horrible, K State still had Prince, etc. Tons of factors that don't exist at present. As far as basketball, well, yeah. I'll take solace in that.
  14. Can someone please suggest to me a candidate that would inspire irrational hope that Kansas could be something other than a dumpster fire of a football program? If not wins, I'll settle for misplaced optimism.
  15. So I wasn't the only one? I was pretty sure I'd get it by jerking off.
  16. He's not dead. And he's not satisfied. But she is.
  17. I got KENTA, or whatever, and Regal, in the same ring. Worth my viewing for that alone.
  18. New Wolves in the Throne Room is... very much not metal. Which isn't a surprise, really, as it was billed as a sort of ambient companion piece to Celestial Lineage. And that's exactly what it is. Not my thing, but here's something of it, if you're curious. Apparently they're headed back to their black metal niche after this. Keeping with the atmospheric black metal theme, and the (kinda done now, but whatever) focus on female vocalists, here's this. I'm buying the record already.
  19. We're still here. (Iowa State got pounded by NDSU, so maybe they'll be nearly as bad.)
  20. Not trying to troll, but could someone please explain what they mean when they say "Southern style wrestling"? What traits make it discernibly different from current WWE, and why exactly would it work? It just feels to me like a generic term for "I liked this thing when I was young, and other people will still like this thing now". You could paste any territory there, but it's always "Southern". Why not a "Portland style", or "Stampede style" fed? It certainly shouldn't be because of some imagined WCW fanbase that's just waiting around to be roped back in.
  21. Austin's been asked that before. He'd be game, of course, but the truth is Rock's far too big a star for that sort of direct to DVD action flick.
  22. Lucky or no, that was funny. I was raised vegetarian, now vegan/drug abstainer (hate the term straight edge, for a ton of reasons), listened to punk my entire life. Basically the Earth Crisis target demo. Still never could get into the hardcore "scene" (littered with intolerant bigots, and leave it at that), and had/have zero problems laughing at it. The uniforms are silly, as is the choreography. But shit, I always liked metal better anyway, and probably listen to more black metal than anything at present. When you've got an In the Nightside Eclipse poster in your room (as a grade schooler), you learn not to take your music preferences - and the images they project - too seriously. Anyway, you gotta be able to laugh at yourself.
  23. Kobashi. And it's not really close. Wouldn't be a wrestling fan otherwise. A brilliant worker in every way, complimented of course by other legends, in the early and mid 90s. But beyond that, an overwhelming physical charisma that elevated those affairs to pro wrestling nirvana, and carried him forward as his body broke down.
