  1. Edd "Kookie" Byrnes, the Luke Perry of the Greaser set, has died at 87. He made combing one's hair bigger than sliced bread ... Younger people may remember Byrnes as the "National Bandstand" host in "Grease" ... He also hosted the first two pilots for "Wheel of Fortune" in 1975, where he showed up to the studio drunk as a skunk and couldn't remember the difference between vowels and consonants (in his memoir, he alleged a producer caught him pacing the hallways between tapings, furiously trying to remember which letters were vowels) ...
  2. Per Meltzer, Lanny Poffo, Doug Gilbert and Shane Russell (Lance's son) will represent their late family members on Wednesday. I recall reading that Brian Christopher was married and had children (this was per an article on Jerry Lawler's lawsuit regarding Brian's death -- the article did not have any comments from Brian's wife -- unsure if she's in touch with anyone wrestling wise or keeps contact with Lawler or anyone else in Brian's family). Brian's brother was a jack-of-all-trades on the Memphis wrestling scene (Kevin Christian was his TV name, IIRC) -- perhaps he could represent Brian if possible. Meltzer is reporting that longtime Memphis stalwarts Randy Hales and Brandon Baxter worked with AEW officials to "put this together" -- there are definitely some holes (no Brian, Bill Dundee, Dutch Mantel, Tommy Rich or Jerry Jarrett), but it's a good lineup.
  3. Wrestles as "Vanilla Vance" in Georgia -- trained at QT Marshall and Glacier's Power Factory school outside Atlanta.
  4. Going back a ways, I recall when Disney Channel was a premium network similar in scope to HBO or Showtime. This was the 80s to mid-90s. The programming was a lot more varied -- you would get, say, travelogue shows on Disney parks, ambitious (albeit family friendly) movies and miniseries, classic Disney TV shows and films (Dean Jones movies and "Zorro" reruns were commonplace). I even recall them bringing back the "College Bowl" game show with Dick Cavett hosting! Now, thanks to my daughter's viewing habits, I can see it's the same six shows on repeat. Another oddity from the 80s -- on Sundays, Lifetime would cede its programming day for medical-related shows. Not shows like "Dr. Pimple Popper" or "Botched", but actual medical training and educational programs "for doctors, by doctors." Am I the only one who remembers ESPN ceding three or so hours of its morning schedule for a business news show back in the 80s? As a kid growing up in the 80s, USA Network was great during the day with "Cartoon Express" (primarily short-lived 70s cartoons like "Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch" and "Devlin") and 70s-80s game show and court show reruns.
  5. RIP Jack Sheldon, jazz musician best known for his singing on two iconic "Schoolhouse Rock" shorts ... And he made fun of one of his iconic characters on "The Simpsons" ...
  6. Radio shock jock Don Imus has died at 79.
  7. At my three area cinemas of misfit films, we are showing the new Star Wars movie. We're also getting the new … Steven Seagal film ...' Seagal and DMX, together again. Plus these two artistic endeavors ... THE GREAT WAR -- Historical inaccuracies abound in this "Saving Private Ryan meets 1917 meets The Asylum" film. MOB TOWN -- There's only one man capable of bringing down an organized crime ring, and that man is ….. David Arquette?!?!? On the Brightside, we're getting screenings of "The Irishman" here.
  8. Ascension would be a decent fit for NWA or even Impact, if they opt to keep teaming post WWE. Harper as a big heel hoss in AEW would be worth a watch. He could also fit as a gaijin upper carder in AJ or NOAH. GoD seem a bit stale at the moment in NJ. Adding Hunico could freshen things up.
  9. Caroll Spinney, the puppeteer behind Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street, has died at 85.
  10. Forget who reported it initially, but I recall reading that Sapp was in line for the spot that went to Monty Brown in WWECW but Sapp wanted too much money.
  11. Back to Central Florida, back to seeing what's showing in my local theatres and likely ONLY my local theatres ... ACCELERATION Lundgren, Flanery, Trejo, Liddell -- sleepwalk through their lines in a film that saved money primarily by avoiding traditional lighting of all kinds. PRIMAL Nicolas Cage in "Snakes on a Plane" if the plane was a cargo ship and the snakes were a menagerie of wild animals. BADLAND First time I've ever seen a trailer emphasize a Grammy nominee in its cast in a film that doesn't appear to have any musical numbers whatsoever.
  12. Some recent uploads from Monsoon Classic ... Terry Funk vs. Jake Milliman -- AWA, 1985. Stay for the epic video introducing viewers to Funk at the end. I would purchase a pickup truck if Terry Funk were its national spokesman. Funk/Bockwinkel/"Mr. Electricity" vs. High Flyers and C. Hennig -- AWA, 1985. 1989 WWE -- first time I've heard this entrance music connected to Perfect. Very spaghetti western-esque.
  13. Took my daughter to a Halloween party at a local town square earlier today. She got plenty of candy, and I saw, once again, that our local theaters have a few films that no one has heard of. The bad news … the theaters promoted that a screen would show the new CM Punk film this weekend, but that wasn't the case. However, we are getting ... THE GALLOWS ACT 2 The sequel nobody asked for from a film people barely remember. TRICK Omar Epps … was behind on his car payments.
  14. The guy who created "Saved By the Bell," Sam Bobrick, has died at 87. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sam-bobrick-dead-saved-by-bell-creator-was-87-1247426?fbclid=IwAR1dVRuN9QRSarM1b458OQ6fj21ySVGoMt6o0vAaKUJvMwdBg4Cq7IH4B3I Received an Emmy nod for his writing on the Smothers Brothers' show in the 1960s. Also wrote 19 "Andy Griffith Show" episodes and four Broadway plays.
  15. Both the Observer and PWInsider are reporting that Paul Adams, who was a well-known manager on the Northeast and Southern indy scenes in the 90s, passed away last week. I recall seeing Adams in the mid-to-late 90s when America One (I think) would air Bert Prentice-promoted shows from Tennessee on the weekends. Adams was an entertaining manager who unfortunately hit his prime when the role of the manager became passe in the big leagues. He could have been a decent head of a B-level stable in WCW or WWF in the early 1990s.
  16. And two for the families that are showing here and likely here only ... CINDERELLA AND THE SECRET PRINCE Appears to have been animated and voiced by a middle school computer class. SANTA FAKE We sure love our holiday-themed movies that no one's ever heard of down here. This one has that one guy from Glee, the one woman from … Glee, and a Brat Packer who I don't think appeared on Glee.
  17. Took my eight-year-old daughter to "Abominable" earlier tonight (she liked it) and, once again, the local theaters have their fair share of films that no one has heard of and may be getting their only screenings. Here's a look at what's being shown in Central Florida for the 55+ crowd this weekend ... MARY Gary Oldman and his family go on a boat trip. And the boat is EVIL. LUCKY DAY Crispin Glover as a hitman with a French accent? I'm listening ...
  18. A rare dramatic turn from Rip Taylor as Demi Moore's boss in "Indecent Proposal"
  19. Now time for another edition of "Films That Are Only Showing at My Local Theatre." This weekend, it's a doozy of premieres for the 55+ crowd ... Bruce Willis and Michael Chiklis have a bald-off in "10 Minutes Gone." Showing in that same theater as the Nic Cage/Laurence Fishburne flick mentioned in another thread. Not the Simon and Garfunkel biopic I was expecting. This is showing at my local theater under the title "Christmas Survival." There's always time down here for a Christmas movie no one has heard of.
  20. I would like to note that my local theater, one of three that shows anything with a pulse, is currently showing this.
  21. Not sure if this is the right spot for this, but NBCU just announced two reboots/sequels greenlit for its streaming service. Saved By The Bell -- Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkeley have signed on to return in some capacity. Punky Brewster -- Soleil Moon Frye stars and may have a producer credit.
  22. Time now for this weekend's edition of "Movies Premiering Only At My Area Theatre" ... Opening today …. D-DAY: DOG COMPANY It's supposedly based on the D-Day invasion of 1944. You'll learn plenty about D-Day that you never learned in your history textbooks. Take for instance the scene in 1:01 of the video. Who knew northern France was known for its palm trees? And if you like your films with MMA fighters and the spawn of famous actors, this film's for you. We have Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, the son of Nicolas Cage and the son of Martin Kove. Plus a cameo by the actual Martin Kove, who hopefully split gas money with his son. Over/Under on the most people attending a screening of this film -- 5. Three of them will mistakenly walk in trying to find the theater for "Hustlers".
  23. His family announced that Eddie Money passed away today at 70.
  24. And given this is a 55+ town, there are a few films aimed at residents and their grandkids that few people have heard of (apologies if the links aren't automatically going to the video -- working with a new computer here). BOY GENIUS A film that has nothing to do with Jimmy Neutron, but it has a 12-year-old child prodigy joining forces with Tom Hanks' wife to solve a mystery. CHRISTMAS BREAK-IN It's "Home Alone" in a school. Somebody please launch a GoFundMe campaign to give Danny Glover a retirement fund. SANTA GIRL Barry Bostwick gets his "new deck for his house" paycheck playing St. Nick in this flick.
