Between the Zack Sabre Jr. match last August, the Ohara match in January (which I loved), and this one, he's really proving he's a lot more than the flippy guy with the backflip elbow drop that people viewed him as years ago.

NOMINATE: Tomohiro Ishii vs. Tomoaki Honma, May 3rd There's a couple other borderline matches from this show, but this is the only one I feel really strongly about. I was so happy when this match got announced because I knew they'd kill it and Honma so rarely gets to have a big singles match (I see he's back to the opening match multiman next show). This match was exactly the back and forth killfest you'd expect, and Honma obviously got my letters and busted out the the top-to-floor diving headbutt. Goddamn.

NOMINATE: Tomohiro Ishii vs. Tetsuya Naito, April 6th Just a notch below their February match, but that still makes this one of the top 10 matches of the year. NOMINATE: Hirooki Goto & Katsuyori Shibata vs. Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows, April 6th This one is borderline, but the CRAZYASS finishing sequence between Goto & Anderson puts it over the top. NOMINATE: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Shinsuke Nakamura, April 6th My favourite of their three this year. Nakamura's win felt more definitive than either of Tanahashi's, and probably told the best story as well.

IMO: Tanahashi/Nakamura: 4/6 > 2/9 > 1/4 Ishii/Naito: 2/11 > 4/6 > 3/15

If you don't count four matches on the Dome show, three matches on the February shows, and Okada/Ibushi, I agree.

NOMINATE: Kazuchika Okada vs. Kota Ibushi, March 6th Hoo boy did this rule. Considerably better than their DDT match from last year, which was still very good if not slightly underwhelming. Everything in this was super crisp, and Okada continues to have amazing timing on everything. The only negative was that I KNEW this wasn't ending until Okada hit a Rainmaker, so I wasn't really biting on a lot of the false finishes. The commentator is the best in the biz, BTW, and took this match to another level.

I think Naito is better when he's NOT main eventing, somehow. Ishii is such a dude. They kicked out of a LOT of stuff, but somehow it didn't feel like overkill, which is a testament to how well it was worked. So great to see Ishii win a title, even if it's a weird tertiary one. - Okada vs. Goto 2/11: Meltzer called it Okada's best individual performance, and I find it hard to disagree. All the timing in this is just perfect. It's amazing how strong Goto stays despite losing EVERY title shot he's ever had.

I feel like there were 6 matches to pick from for this award: Tanahashi/Okada 4/7, Goto/Shibata 6/22, Tanahashi/Ishii 8/2, Shibata/Ishii 8/4, Nakamura/Ibushi 8/4, and Tanahashi/Okada 10/14. This was one of the 6 (though probably not the most obvious of the 6), so I'm okay with it.

I think that is the issue we are gonna run into. We have "nominations but it seems like there has to be a better way to get everything together. Also I don't think ECW should be included. If they were included I'd say ROH has to be included even if that broke up the "Big 3" mentality. But if we don't include ECW in this, what do we include it in? It certainly doesn't need its own category, having existed for only 13 months of the 2000's. ROH was around for almost all of the 2000's and will have 100+ match nominations, whereas ECW has about 10, if that. So why not just stick it in here? Nothing wrong with doing one for ROH, one for TNA, and one for all other non-WWE feds (i.e. this).

Still awesome. 2/10 - Minoru Suzuki vs. Kazuchika Okada - I like this better than their longer title match from May. They accomplished the same thing in less time. Many cool sequences to be had here. 2/10 - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Karl Anderson - Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. Gotta be a Top 5 or 10 MOTYC. 3/11 - Satoshi Kojima vs. Tomohiro Ishii - First round of the New Japan Cup, and this is Kojima proving he's still got great singles matches in him after not really having any for about 2 years. 4/5 - Prince Devitt vs. Alex Shelley - I think this isn't getting a lot of play because it's not from one of the big iPPVs and maybe less people have seen it, but holy cow, this is great. Best chain wrestling I've seen this year, and a hot finishing sequence. 6/22 - Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov vs. Alex Shelley & KUSHIDA - Just when I thought I'd be sick of their fifth PPV match in 8 months, they go and have their best match together. 7/20 - Minoru Suzuki vs. Tomohiro Ishii - Bryan Alvarez's self-proclaimed best match of all time. Worth a nom. 8/2 - Satoshi Kojima vs. Katsuyori Shibata - See 3/11 re: Kojima. Also, one of the best lariat sells ever by Shibata. 8/10 - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada - Of their four matches together in 2013, it's their worst. It's also four and a half stars. 8/11 - Satoshi Kojima vs. Kazuchika Okada - Koji plays spoiler to keep Okada out of the finals and has an awesome match in the process. 8/11 - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Katsuyori Shibata - Real good match, GREAT finish. Looking forward to a big PPV match between the two in 2014 where Tanahashi doesn't have to wrestle a half-hour match later in the night. 8/11 - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito - Is this not getting play because there were a few better matches in the G-1? While that may be the case, that doesn't change the fact that this is GREAT and is the most over Naito has been in this run. 9/29 - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Prince Devitt - Feel-good match of the year. Devitt has two underhanded wins in a row over Tanahashi, Tanahashi beats up the whole Bullet Club, beats Devitt, everyone goes home happy. 9/29 - Satoshi Kojima vs. Kazuchika Okada - Longer and just as good match as their G-1 on 8/11. Sorry about that bump on the Rainmaker, Koji. That probably sucked. 10/14 - Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Naomichi Marufuji - I'm guessing this hasn't been nominated yet because there were so many great matches on 10/14 and it was just overlooked? I think it's better than Shibata/Ishii on the same show, and that match rules too. 11/9 - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tomohiro Ishii - Not AS good as their 8/2 match, but still really good. I was hoping Ishii would somehow pull out another win, but that was literally impossible. 11/9 - Kazuchika Okada vs. Karl Anderson - These guys can't have a bad match together. Their Rainmaker/Gun Stun reversal sequences are always amazing.
