Ultimately, the NCAA is in a precious state of affairs, and I don’t think it’s in their immediate interests to bring the hammer down too hard on a big, influential program like Michigan, so I would honestly be surprised if too much comes of the Stalions investigation.

But it is rather ironic that Harbaugh appears to be leaving college football under very similar circumstances as his old pal, Pete Caroll, in 2009: getting out of town just before the posse comes.

Has the NCAA ever brought the hammer down on an influential state school like Michigan? In the long run Penn State wasn't really punished for covering up children being raped in their football locker room, did they do anything to UNC for 18 years of academic fraud? USC and Miami got hammered for agent/booster stuff, but both are private schools.

Timestamped to an interview with "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin in his home office. Garvin's hit and miss with me but this was a solid hit, he's like a Cohen Brothers character in this and he, Sunshine, and Mercer play off each other perfectly

With the exception of the Rubik's Cube on the desk, Garvin, Sunshine and the wood paneling in that office all have a 1979 look. Also, Garvin looks like a promoter for a shady record label who gives program directors coke.

Frank Farian, best known as songwriter, producer and singer of Boney M. and basically being Milli Vanilli, passed away yesterday at the age of 82.

I never knew this! I've had the Milli Vanilli doc on my watchlist for awhile, guess I should have watched it instead of investing so much time in The Curse.

Norman Jewison, who directed Fiddler on the Roof, Moonstruck, and like a million other things, has died at age 97.

His filmography has a bunch of “he directed that” flicks like Rollerball, F.I.S.T. and Other People’s Money. If you’ve never seen The Cincinnati Kid or A Solider’s Story go watch them, they’re his best in my book.

I guess I will put this here since divisional is now locked.  Apparently the talking heads are crapping on both the Lions and Bucs coaches for the ending of the game.  The Lions because they went 3 kneel downs even though the Bucs had a time out remaining and the Buccaneers for having that one timeout and basically ignoring it the time out and let the clock run out.   If he would have missed the FG he would have had about 30 seconds to go about 65 yards.

If I was a Bucs fan I'd be annoyed with that, the Lions played it smart though.

I live in the Detroit area but didn't grow up here so I never cared what the local teams did, I'm now on the fence with the Lions, while it'll be nice for some people I know there are others who will be insufferable if they win, but as a Steeler fan I don't want the 49ers to get a 6th Lombardi trophy and join the Steelers in the 6 with no asterisk club. On the AFC side I of course want Baltimore to get their doors blown off, KC in the Super Bowl with subplot of Taylor Swift getting from her Tokyo Dome concert to Las Vegas in time for the game will be hysterical and make a certain segment of the populations heads explode, so I'm all for it.

Not having watched much Sammartino, even though he said he didn't like Flair "working the same match", what about him? What was so different about his defenses? I get the feeling this is a typical champion bitch, that the other guy is samey and boring unlike them; when really they all have a formula that they just tweak for different opponents.

Bruno changed his stance on Flair, he used to praise him in the 80’s and 90’s then Flair said something about Bruno not being a draw or some nonsense in the 2000’s, that shifted Bruno to the Bret Hart “Flair worked the same match” take.

In his prime Bruno was able to adapt to his opponents, that was one of the reasons for his longevity, but his second run was usually vs. a monster type Hansen/Brody or strongman like Graham/Patera.

He referenced Big Time Wrestling during the Lions/Chiefs game that opened the season as well.

Announcers in that age group usually reference whatever the local wrestling was called when they were growing up, Bill Cowher has tossed out “Studio Wrestling” from time to time.

Did Flair make many trips to New York around this time as champion? I'm assuming not (I know he had that draw with Backlund).

I wonder if that was due to politics or how structured the territory was at the time of long term babyface champion, #2 babyface was heating up the next challenger, and #3/4 were thrown together in a random tag team, so there was never really any reason to bring him in?

Flair worked MSG in 1976 before he was NWA champion, the standard upcoming star from another territory working a preliminary match to get in the magazines, that was it until 1991.

Backlund talks about the Omni match with Flair in his book, if I remember right he felt Flair and Jim Crockett Jr were acting kind of shady before the match, a so maybe that killed any chance of a MSG match like Backlund had with Harley.

When WWF was part of the NWA and therefore Flair was above Backlund

Not really, the NWA champion was never mentioned on WWF tv expect when Harley showed up for the MSG match against Backlund. On WWF tv they would call Backlund either the WWF champion or World Champion, it was never really consistent, at house shows in Pittsburgh he’d always be billed as “World Cham-peen”.

Speaking of barely surviving...   Mike Tomlin says Kenny Pickett is Pittsburgh's QB1.

However... they will "bring in competition" next season.  And that they want Mason Rudolph back (which of course means, 'Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out Mase').

As he should be, Pickett was playing better after Canada was fired and before the injury. Art Rooney II really needs to open the checkbook up(which is hard for him to do) and hire a legit O coordinator and QB coach.

The Gary Hart talk made me have to pull up this lovely promo again. "Hey bro, what it is!" and "That's dirty, Brooks!" have been in my head for years now. Watching it again, however, you realize they're talking about Mike Von Erich's shoulder separation, which led to the toxic shock, which led to the coma, which led to the suicide. Yeesh. And the guy Gary would find to complete his trio? In the words of NWA Champion Mr. Harley Race, "............KABUKI!"

Love the “New McDLT” billboard in the background!

he'd say it "that Russian defector I saw on the news 2 weeks ago" even if he wasn't on the news any time in recent memory

I always thought a “Russian” defector angle would have gotten over in the 80’s, sadly Vince, Dusty and Watts never saw Moscow on the Hudson.

That's the interesting Catch 22 that all these scenarios posed that everyone including myself have put forward. Even when we blindly assume Frank Goodish is willing to be a good businessman, there is the reality that we're still dealing the evidence from all the sides and parties involved that this probably wouldn't go very smoothly. A lot of the turnover I brought up that happened during the Hulkamania era is cause people just got tired of it. And that's when the business was red hot. Now add in a guy who is notoriously not willing to deal with the bullshit that comes with it. Not the greatest recipe for success.

Did anyone who was working with Hogan walk? You don’t think Brody knew about the payoffs guys who main evented house shows with Hogan were getting? There’s a reason none of guys who got those main events ever badmouthed the Hulkster. You don’t think he knew about the merchandise checks everyone was getting?

There is a good chance Brody, not really loving the insane WWF schedule, has had enough and just no shows an event at like the Mid Hudson Civic Center never to be heard of in WWF again. Just resurfaces in Puerto Rico and probably Global in the twilight of his career and pop ups in fan conventions and Cauliflower Alley every now and again.

But no showing a Mid-Hudson Civic Center show would cost him big paydays at MSG, Spectrum, Maple Leaf Gardens and so on. It’s easy to walk out on dying territories for $2,500, not so much for the biggest promotion in the world and $25,000 paydays.
