  1. Yeah I think everyone had that nanosecond 'hey!' reaction seeing that result before coming to terms that becoming Goto 2.0 probably isn't a priority for Zack at the moment if we assume that Naito isn't dropping anytime soon.

My sub isn't active at the moment but I'm hopeful for the new and improved HOT Narita I keep hearing about considering I never rated any of his Shibata Jr stuff.

  2. Seconded. Seems like Cobb has been working semi-hurt for ages so good to see him work a proper main event singles match. Uemura / Shingo was a good match too but Uemura is exciting because of his potential and the crowd here were excited for what Tsuji is now. Great noise for the size of the crowd. No way someone would group him with Umino and Narita if they started watching the product today.

Side note: Starting to really appreciate how much a protruding belly helps a splash. The bigger the bulge the less Jeff's standing moonsault looks like a cute flex.

    Spoiler

I'm not buying into the common Western take that NJPW need to start giving all the big wins to younger guys then voila lots of new stars, but if you wanted to have an inter-faction title defense between Naito and and Tsuji then this NJC is the way to do it.

  3. News appears to be breaking (I'm trusting translations on this) that Yutaka Yoshie has sadly passed away after his match today. Found this out in the middle of writing a post for the New Japan tour thread where I had mentioned his name (will remove it in case seen as disrespectful). I liked him in the few G1s with him I saw but I'm largely in the dark about his performances after leaving New Japan.

Slight tangent alert!  For those of you with NJPW World, if you're looking for a palate cleanser after last night, I would strongly recommend four matches from the final two Korakuen Hall nights of FantasticaMania:

Soberano Jr vs Templario / Rocky Romero vs. Volador Jr. / Atlantis Jr vs. Hechicero / Stuka Jr vs. Mascara Dorada

Thanks because I'm lost without the recs. I'd already seen Atlantis Jr vs. Hechicero which I enjoyed (the latter has proper 'this guy's a pro wrestler' energy, something which I keep on referring to while wanting a way to articulate better). Lucha is 100% blind spot for me and I feel like a filthy casual doing it wrong by watching these guys work singles matches in Japan. I wonder how much appeal this kind of thing has to regular viewers. I assume not a lot but maybe there's a Dragon Gate in ROH element to some of it where they're playing the old hits to a new audience and its fresher for it.

How was Yota Tsuji vs. Yuya Uemura? That was the match I was most looking forward to and haven't seen the show yet. Thanks.

They went long. I was a bit down on the match afterwards because some of the transitions were a bit weird and there were often sequences which were not as smooth as we're used to. Felt like they were too green to be working a half hour match in the semi-main. Then I remembered that despite them being heralded as NJPW TNG these guys had been back from excursion for less than a year, and Yuya has very little singles experience so yes of course they're green and they did well. Good match to see them flesh out their movesets, but noticeable that Yuya doesn't have a character yet.

The impressive bit was that the haircut wasn't even the spiciest part of the post match. On his way out Yota went over to Okada who was with the commentary team and gave him an earful about the way he left the company. Perfect fit for LIJ.

  5. Often when watching big ZSJ matches I wonder where or when we're going to be able to see this kind of thing once he hangs up his boots. This match was that dialled up to 11 with Bryan also seeming like one of wrestling's irreplacables. Things of note: Zack's facials having to do a bit more work than usual, and great strikes.

Thanks to the Natural for linking to the backstage comments because they put each other over great. In that interview Zack articulates a) what is special about this pairing b) what his angle is for him wanting the title and c) why he's staying with New Japan (ie principles). The latter would've also been the reason why him leaving would be sadder than the others, so grateful viewing for me.

I don't think the cage match is going to be divisive. Plenty you can nitpick, but it's a classic! I saw an interview with Clark Conners recently talking about how him/Drilla didn't grow up watching Japanese wrestling and how they're still basically doing straight American stuff. This was a rare chance to do a particular type of American wrestling in Japan by people who probably understood how much freedom the territory gives them and that another chance might not be forthcoming.

All the feelings you want to get - jeopardy, entrapment, escalation and discomfort. Cage was used well, the teams worked as teams and an appropriate finish. Memorable as hell, and everyone is better off for being involved.

Not fussed about ELP or the GoD guys leaving, I just hope they've been able to keep hold of Zack and War Dogs. I do worry about the possibility of ZSJ leaving though with his recent relocation to LA from Tokyo.

Between the poor Japanese economy at the moment and the company nearly going broke through the pandemic it's not a surprise that they'll probably lose a fair number of their foreigners (especially the higher paid ones like Cobb). Part of me does hope that a number of them do go as it'll either make New Japan focus on their younger guys or look at some other options for potential foreigner talent (the Velocities would kill it in the junior tag division).

That's pretty much where I'm at regarding who to keep. I like ELP and it'd suck for him to go when he has just broke out in the heavyweight division like he has but with his background and age I can't begrudge him for cashing up considering his ceiling with the company. He turned down AEW last year so at least we can assume he's going to be doing what he wants to do. Your mention of Cobb was interesting to me because although I've always rated him and think he's valuable on account of being so unique among the roster, it made me realise that I'd close to forgotten about him which shows how he has been downplayed this last year. I assume he's going.

I was actually under the impression that they'd already started focusing on younger guys / other foreign options since around 2022 in anticipation of future losses. Successfully, judging by the number of people who are of the same 'if the War Dogs stay then we're good' mentality. A lot of relatively unproven foreign names added to the midcard at the time for a company with no money so now if a group of the more established names leave it doesn't look too bad.

I like ELP more than you. Don't care about the GOD. If indeed this is Tama Tonga's last NJPW match, terrifies me he's defending the NEVER Openweight Championship against EVIL and EVIL wins. Shingo Takagi should have defended the title and gone over Tonga at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18.

Bad news: EVIL was favourite to win even before there was a mistake made on the company website showing him as the current champion..

Good news: They kayfabed it majestically:

  7. The show with UE vs BC is the last match for Will as a New Japan contracted wrestler. If we take that to mean it's the cut off point for annual contracts then it's notable that the top three matches are ELP/Hikuleo defending their titles, ZSJ getting his 'home' soil rematch and a main event featuring ten(!) foreign talents. None have been announced for dates beyond this point, so chances are it'll be the last time to see some of those names in the company.

I've been assuming the worst ever since Tony Khan singled Zack out for praise during Wrestle Kingdom.

  8. Spoiler

He wasn't walking great when he arrived at the venue today. I'm remembering the 'tacks in his shoe' reason he gave for mobility issues in one of his AEW appearances, and the conflicting nature of reports on his health before his NJPW contract was up. Indecipherable to the end.

He's anti-surgery apparently. He may need to choose between that and wanting to wrestle in the future.

Indeed, I feel myself becoming significantly more motivated after watching and absorbing this.

This is all about my promo style preference so not a judgement on the man, but it's good to see Bryan like this hyping a match without any forced smile/laugh and only a fleeting appearance of his raised 'grr I'm intense' promo voice.

The guy's smart and he loves to lie so just sit him down and let him do what he loves I'll buy it all.

  10. I don't mind that idea for SANADA, but Naito going over would be one of those pro wrestling moments where predictability is best. He's their top draw, hasn't had the top title in three years and is beginning to break down. 'We're going to do the roll call properly this time' is the biggest incentive they have to get fans back into attending live post-pandemic and I don't think it's the time to play around with that expectation.

Agreed totally on ZSJ. He isn't a draw in any meaningful way currently and nothing says making a connection to the Japanese crowd like George Michael references and Argos observations in your move names. Saw the promo vid for Ospreay v Zack and Will is the one that looks like the star. Will say however that he has been making good progress in terms of his style/aggression recently in addition to his physical transformation. Was also impressed that he's now comfortable enough to make jokes in Japanese. If he has managed to be at least halfway fluent that's a big standout factor for him and if he can communicate the personality we know he has through that then it's very encouraging.

Abema: Hey, we just signed a deal with the WWE to broadcast their shows.

NJPW: Cool, here, have a four hour show main evented by SANADA vs EVIL.

The main event actually managed to get a million viewers which was better than I think anyone expected, as was the news that NJPW's revenue is now almost at pre-pandemic levels.

Will be going to Royal Quest III tomorrow. Bit of a downer in that the show was announced too late and held too soon after the AEW/RevPro shows to do a decent gate seemingly, and my read of the main event is that they're doing the match while they can before both guys leave the company / my wrestling viewing life but should be good graps. They've said they'll continue to do UK shows so upside is that hopefully next time it'll be a smaller venue and I can afford better seats.

Initially thought it would be my first time seeing Eddie but then remembered I already had at All In but it consisted of someone pointing to the other side of an arena asking me if I could see him with me repeating that I couldn't, before saying that I could just to get them to stop asking, then seeing a light next to him that identified the area I should be looking at which was my entertainment for the next minute or two. Quite a few Rev Pro guys on the card but I'm not complaining because apparently I'm useless at appreciating up and coming talent (thought nothing of Gabe on the card last year, now he's one of my favourites) and having experience of shelling out for trans-continental flights it seems a financial miracle that it's worthwhile to fly half the roster over for a show like this.

You were way up high, but watching the ring and not the screens? Fuck, I was on the pitch and had to watch the screens a bunch because fuckers kept standing in front of me.

I found myself alternating between 'why have I come all this way to sit and watch the home feed' when I glanced down and realised I was able to make out the action (rope running sequences mainly) and my default 'why am I squinting at the ring when I can actually see what's happening on the screens provided' the rest of the time. There were a few occasions when my eyes were fixed on the entranceway waiting for wrestlers to appear only for me to notice in the corner of my eye on the screens that they were already in the ring. Hopefully that makes you feel better. And you had a bigger screen! I had to give my eyes a rest a few times the same way I do after staring at a screen all day for work.

I had the solace of knowing that I basically sampled the Wrestlemania experience for cheap which might not apply to you. I imagine for many seats you had neither the comfort of home viewing or the intimacy of live wrestling, but at least you get the atmosphere. Although it sounds like a backhanded compliment the entrances were highpoints of the evening for me as I could take in the full spectacle.

Was also happy that distance from the ring didn't put those around me off from heckling or trying to start chants. No commentary for us obviously so for example the double clothesline pin is absolutely enhanced by a voice from behind screaming 'WHERE'S TONY? WHERE'S TONY AND HIS HEADSET?'

  13. I'm not saying it was hard to make things out from the nosebleed seats, but this morning there was a debate over the breakfast table between me and my wife about who won the main event.

Don't know if it was intentional but it really helped having so many matches be white gear vs black gear.

  14. Will's UK title rebranding is confirmed as a gimmick and not a permanent change (I thought it was a possibility, don't laugh).

NJPW announced Royal Quest III at the Copper Box this October. Feels ambitious considering that AEW are running their biggest show ever less than two months prior in the same city and a similar story with Rev Pro running their biggest show ever in the exact same building. Plus they announced it late so people like me would've spent their limited funds on the other shows not knowing there was going to be a choice. One show instead of two so should be one good consolidated card which is my preference.

  15. Not sure if we are still spoilering so spoilering.

    Spoiler

Okada against Evil was good stuff thanks to Okada being the archetypal overcoming the odds babyface, which is notable considering he was heeling it up the next night in the same building. Full marks for selling strikes to the nuts like they should. It's a simple one really you go down and you stay down but sometimes that's forgotten.

Forgot to mention about Okada's post match comments in the ring after his victory over Zack. Told the fans that this was a 20+ minute match and therefore the kind that couldn't have happened in the group stages. It lasted all of 21:46 and you know TV champ Zack would've cut that down if needed!

Saw a stat after the semis that Okada was 7-6 over Naito, which made the final result clear to me. The hot crowd at Sumo Hall fully in Naito's corner kind of makes a mockery of the idea of anyone else winning. Perfect timing for Naito who is clearly on the decline but can still go when needed. Makes days like these seem like a well signposted last run to be savoured rather than being a case of the same old faces.

All the t-shirt Naito and dodgy knees jibes mesh well with his lazy (rather than drunken) master act, and as matches where he shifts into top gear become less frequent over time they may end up surprising even his own fans. Saw some that thought the mishap at the end of the Ospreay match was a work, so maybe when you sell everything with glassy eyes like you're regretting wrestling as a career choice even temporary KOs can just add to the drama. Were it not for the audible I would say it didn't affect the match a great deal, and it added to the relief when Naito made his apparently fully conscious comeback.

Wasn't enamoured with three destinos for the finish to both nights, but he's still teasing the stardust press so maybe that's the fairytale payoff for another dome win.

The UK title could be a gimmick change for Will's reign but I can see it sticking (if so I love the idea of the supposed IWGP committee okaying the pitch). My speculative take is that Ospreay gets whatever he wants next year and that involves New Japan investing in / supporting the UK in some way like they're doing with NZ/Australia. Helps avoid confusion with the NJPW Strong title and helps them get first dibs on non-NA foreigners who don't have better paying competition at home. New Japan as Rest of the World Pro Wrestling hasn't been bad.

May give thoughts on the tournament as a whole later, but thanks all for the tips regarding the Sumo Hall tag matches that I would otherwise have skipped. Boltin, Fujita, Oiwa, and Tsuji all getting some shine.

  16. I may be misremembering but there's a notion in my head of William Regal saying he listened to what people (particularly non-fans) said they didn't like about pro wrestling and then endeavoured never to do those things himself.

Okada/ZSJ was my kind of wrestling. Two of the best in the company IMO, in their prime, given time to work in the main event spot and I don't think a moment of it breached the above rule for me.

I'm not seeing any compelling reason for ZSJ to be at the top of the company but he's top end in the ring and for those on the sidelines disappointed in the loss he's coming across as a bigger deal all the time. At one point strikes were Zack's achilles heel but here he's a faction leader beating out Okada in strike exchanges and looking good doing it.

  18. Impressed with how well the booking meshed with AEW's current angles in the end. Personally I'd love an All Together style card full of multiman tags where it's wall to wall unique pairings but I appreciate that they would prefer to make money.

There was a comment from Bryan in the media scrum 'from an artist's perspective I think you always have to look at the totality of the show and do what you think is in the best interest for the overall show'. To put my grumpy boots on for a second I felt this wasn't a consideration for the US title match. I was seeing live reactions from people outright stating that they no longer had interest in the 'regular' matches making up the rest of the card after it took place, suggesting stronger desensitisation than your usual tough act to follow. Seems like the third match in the series people were anticipating might not be happening and with that in mind they may have shoehorned bits of a hypothetical match 3 into a spot on the card originally planned as match 2.

I thought that Okada going over was one of those predictable but correct choices to avoid him being just a guy for future shows. The Japanese angle is that the tap out is a big humiliation so that suggests it's going somewhere but if that somewhere happens in Japan then it's not going to help when people are expected to pop for the coin drop on Dynamite for a third time. With the benefit of hindsight regarding the result / greatest wrestler billing / obscene final countdown expenditure, it makes sense for this to have been a big celebration of a now-deteriorating Bryan Danielson facing a New Japan name like he has been wanting to for years. Disappointed that it didn't have the chance to come across that way because of the match limitations and the crowd not being in the best place by that point.

Also...for Forbidden Door, AEW or NJPW have chosen to not spotlight many of the guys  who still wrestle a fast pace or who still have a more high-impact style (EDIT: except Ospreay, obviously. Also, I have no idea how Kenny is still pulling out these huge matches at all, after what he got up to in NJPW). Shingo hasn't had a high-profile singles match in AEW. Neither has Hiromu. Pretty much the entirety of the jr. heavyweight division is left off of matches where they can show what they are really capable of.

+1 Felt like I was the only one who was down on the card when the additional matches was announced, and not surprised some were unimpressed with the guest talent. NJPW is having a great year but this came across as pandering to fans of a past age. Even played outdated entrance music for ELP/Zack/Will as if the last five years were being retconned. Perceived fan demand is probably a factor judging by the amount of big Tanahashi singles matches that I regularly saw being fantasy booked. I once saw the Saudi-esque suggestion for Liger as Sting's mystery partner, though I do kinda like that as an obscure Super Liger reference to tie it to Jericho.

For the uninformed, Tanahashi and Ishii have not been top guys in New Japan for a long while and Kojima/Suzuki are irrelevant to the point where they're not needed on cards and take bookings elsewhere. If you asked me to rank my preferred potential opponents for Punk, Kojima wouldn't even be in last place because I legit forgot he was affiliated with the company. Meanwhile as Tef mentioned, WOTYC Hiromu (currently running a 'travelling across companies defending the IWGP Jr title aiming to break the defence record' angle) gets a seven minute 6-man tag on the pre-show against three people he has faced before in Japan. It's not like the end result was terrible or anything, I'm just baffled by how these things get decided.

Incidentally Punk's ROH interview callback in the corner makes his 'I'm honoured to be in the ring with somebody like Satoshi Kojima' promo going into the match funnier, having already been made hilarious paired directly against 'I'll kill you, you idiot!'. He definitely has an infectious amount of enthusiasm right now.

Hey I just realized that Danielson vs. Okada is technically heel vs. heel right now. Not that they're going to be cheating behind the referee's back, but Danielson and the BCC steamroll people, and Okada thinks he's too good for everyone.

Do you think they actually try to work the match that way, like with both guys adhering to those personas?

It's been fun seeing Okada, Kenny, Ospreay and I guess now Punk switch face/heel for this show. Different roles for different territories.

Aside from that, in the build for this event we have Sanada saying that Jack Perry isn't good enough to challenge, Jack Perry saying he's never seen a Sanada match, Okada saying he hasn't seen much Danielson since he signed for WWE, MJF saying Tanahashi isn't good enough to challenge and Tanahashi not being able to remember MJF's name. So everyone's big leaguing each other whether they're heels or not.

  20. 'WHO'S YOUR PARTNER STING? WHO IS IT?' to end the show is the kind of thing that just makes me happy.

Thanks to US non-jobber matches having to be 50/50 the main event saw Douki having possibly the most dominant performance against a heavyweight in his career. Weird seeing him take it to one of the four pillars fresh out of finishing 7th in his BOSJ block, and also the transition straight back into Jack on offence after eating the table spot but fun match nonetheless, partially thanks to the crowd.

No vocal Taka intro for the Just Five Guys guys. No chance for it to meme them into popularity but probably for the best. On the subject of English being spoken by Japanese I chuckled at Mark's 'well, looks like there's been enough talk' after Douki finished his nine word sentence.

Looking forward to hopefully getting some Forbidden Door pre-show matches announced tonight. I've been whelmed by the recent match announcements but last year the buy-in was also great so hoping for the same here. Hiromu has to get his money's worth for the AEW gear he had made at some point, right?
