The thing that really gets to me about this celebrity death in particular is that when he was on, was there ever anybody who seemed so alive? It feels like a hokey thing to express, but that's exactly how I think of Robin Williams: alive.

as for the lid suggestion, that's a good one but we probably would have chokeslammed somebody through the entire box to get a good near-fall.

Probably my all time favorite RVD moment was during the Invasion angle (actually might have been post-Invasion) when he had beaten the Undertaker. A month or so later, he had crossed Vince over something and Vince told him "TONIGHT, you go ONE on ONE with the UNDERTAKER!!!" with heel Taker standing beside him. And Rob shrugged his shoulders and said "That's cool, I'll just beat him again" and walked off. And Taker looked like he was about to murder him right then and there.
I fondly remember a Raw from May-ish 2002 where they teased Van Dam taking the undisputed belt off of Taker only to have it reversed because the ref missed a rope break. Good times.
My retirement came when twelve-year-old me took a bad pedigree. The carpeted floor shredded my face. I couldn't bare to make eye contact with anyone for about a week.
When I was a kid, I remember "inventing" the Fisherman's DDT so I got my cousin in the headlock, hooked his leg and just spiked him on the floor. After he recovered, I let him superkick me in the face and it staggered me back into a cabinet that I promptly broke. Our wrestling was like a Concession Stand Brawl, complete with magazines used as chair shots and baking trays used as weapons when we got into the kitchen. You had to pay your dues to get into our House Wrestling Federation. It was like ECW but without the hardcore narcotics to numb the pain of jumping down stairs.

RVD was also one blown taillight causing the cops to cuff him away from getting some bad press for the company as its World Champion.
That was probably a factor.
It's not as though the potential to draw negative publicity ever stopped them from going all in with Randy Orton. Double standards abound.

I was a huge RVD fan in the early 00s. I was convinced he should have taken the Rock/Austin slot as top babyface after those guys left. There was no doubt in my mind that he was being held down by the man and that his talents merited a huge push.
To make matters worse, I still love the guy. I no longer feel as strongly about him being held down back then (probably on account of me coming to love some perennial headliners who the internet derided as having held people down; as I got older, I experienced both sides of that argument), but part of me still takes issue with Nash, Michaels, and Goldberg being pushed above him on Raw. Sure, they were safe choices which had some semblance of logic behind them. But Van Dam was mega over. How Booker got that Mania title shot is beyond me. You'll never convince me he was more popular than RVD.
I still mark for RVD in 2014. I marked for RVD in TNA. I now recognize that he's the epitome of a shitty worker who's only concerned with getting his shit in. My taste has evolved beyond that. But some strong bonds formed in youth grow with time. The heart wants what it wants.

Allegedly, Del Rio slapped the shit out of a social media guy at the last tapings. LOP is attributing that to Rob Feinstein. So extra grains of salt.
I'll comb their social media for anything I can interpret as passive-aggressively anti-Del Rio.

I've always loved Elijah Burke. This 2/3 falls match with Punk is awesome.
This was around the time where Punk would be awesome on TV and then have short, indefensible, nothing matches with Morrison three PPVs in a row.

I felt nothing about The Killing. But I was so deep into the first season by the time I decided there was no point that I stuck it out till the end just to find out whodunnit.

Anyone end up sticking out Halt and Catch Fire till the end? I stuck by it well past halfway, but eventually decided I was too lukewarm on it to be arsed. I'm curious if anyone who watched till the end felt strongly one way or another.

Does the nerd appeal of Marvel films outweigh the nerd appeal of Cena hate? I'm not sure. In Batista's case, I'm fairly certain much of the hate he received came down to D-Bryan fandom. Cena's a different case.

No one is going to cheer Batista just because he gave a good performance in a Marvel movie.
I'm not sure I agree. Marvel movies are a much bigger force in entertainment than WWE these days. I wouldn't be shocked if it buys Dave some good will.
People may have moved on from Batista as a top guy, but Marvel movies are still a big fucking deal.

Guardians of the Galaxy is tremendous, and is crushing at the box office.
Batista is getting raves. Think we'll ever see him in WWE again?
After this, he should have a much easier time coming in as a red-hot babyface. I think. Maybe. Assuming I'm not over-estimating the popularity of the Marvel movies. Which one really can't in 2014.

There were actually people here who thought this would bomb? Come on. It's a Marvel film in 2014. They've been making epic bank out of b-list nobodies for the last few years and we're yet to reach the point of diminishing returns. There was no way this was failing. Especially by August standards.
I wish Karen Gillan and Lee Pace would have gotten to make more of an impression. Otherwise, this was a whole lot of fun.
Also, I can't believe I didn't notice Alexis Denisof. Again.

Hey Piranesi! Really loved your Deadwood updates. I'm a broken record at this point, but I have to ask, have you seen The Wire? I feel like maybe you have, but I don't remember any related posts.
Anyways, it would be super cool if you wrote a whole bunch of words about it...
I haven't watched it. I just don't know if I can handle that level of real-world hopelessness, you know? I mean it just sounds so goddamn depressing.
The show also has a surprising amount of humor and warmth. There's a humanity to it which makes life in this broken system worth living (for some), and which has made it a little easier for me to revisit the show over the years.
I can't seem to find a copy or stream of THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES anywhere, goddammit.
Probably for the best. That nine-hour slog could be a mood-killer.
