  1. Man, I was already irrationally excited for Nakajima/Kaz, now even more so. But what a bummer overall.
  2. Very specific request here, but does anyone have any screencaps or photos from the Sekimoto VS Hidaka match from 1/1/2011?
  3. I finally finished the Bockwinkel episode after a 5 hour stocking shift this weekend and that was terrific work guys. Despite the length of it I felt like there was no down time and even a good amount of stuff late in the episode that you could have expanded on. The amount of info you brought to the table in one recording session was truly impressive. I never realized what an elite level king maker Bock was, but after listening to that episode it's obvious he was one of the best. I'm also going to make sure to watch those Robinson matches.
  4. Agreed, the only thing I didn't like about the trailer was his voice sounded off from what I hear in my head for that character. My guess is they were worried something along those lines would have gotten too many Bane comparisons.
  5. It's been a while since I plugged an episode of the Wrestling Night Review Podcast, and I thought episode 22 which just went up was a particularly good one, so I might as well spread the word. http://wrestlingnight.podbean.com/e/wrestling-night-podcast-episode-22/ It's time to recap Aces Wild XVIII, which if you have listened to an episode before you may know is our Stanley Cup, our Starcade, our season finale, and so on. All the matches which won during previous Wrestling Nights for this Saga compete on a 5 star ballot to see which match becomes the 20th Ascended Ace in WresNight history, and which one of our quartet will get to bring a Rey Mysterio Jr plush doll home with him to display on his mantle. The 9 matches competing to see who will go home el Rey de la Noche were: Toshiaki Kawada VS Kensuke Sasaki - NJPW 10/2000 Shinsuke Nakamura VS Kota Ibushi - NJPW 08/2013 Undertaker VS CM Punk - WWE 08/2013 Yoshinobu Kanemaru/Makoto Hashi VS KENTA/Naomichi Marufuji - NOAH 03/2003 Brock Lesnar © VS Undertaker - WWE Championship Hell In A Cell 10/2002 El Samurai VS Koji Kanemoto - NJPW Best of the Super Juniors Finals 06/1997 Akira Hokuto VS Shinobu Kandori - AJW 04/1993 Kyle O'Reilly © VS Roderick Strong - PWG Guerrilla Warfare World Championship 12/2014 Shawn Michaels VS Chris Jericho - WWE No Holds Barred 09/2008 We delve into how sometimes coming to terms with the faults in a match you love is like facing a 2+ year relationship coming to an abrupt end. We discuss how a time traveling Brock Lesnar could be the greatest thing in the history of wrestling. We laugh, we try to pick pineapple out of our teeth, we throw toothpicks at each other and laugh some more. Most of all this episode is spent comparing a lot of great matches which as you can see cover a fairly broad spectrum, as we try to get down to the core of what makes five life long wrestling fans vote for one of these particular matches over another.
  6. So, I don't know if this is the appropriate place to ask, but I also don't know where else to ask- what happened to the YES/NO folders? Was there an official decision to kill them, or did participation just die off? It wasn't the most thorough system but I always found them helpful.
  7. I loved the Japan Hall of Fame episode. Dylan and Alan's opinions on Taue and Akiyama were so spot on with my own that it was eerie. I particularly enjoyed the analysis on Akiyama as a lot of those points are ones that I think people somehow don't realize about him, about the massive body of work he's put together and how it would compare to wrestlers of previous generations in terms of scope. I also go back and forth on Nagata so hearing the same kind of discussion regarding him from two points of view I found interesting.
  8. Both of the indy episodes have been absolutely fantastic, the combo of Kris, Wes & Naylor is magic. You guys get me so psyched to watch wrestling, I am ordering all of this years BOLA pretty much just based on your podcast previewing it before it happened.
  9. I stopped watching after the Flashpoint Paradox in large part because THAT was too senselessly violent.
  10. I was trying to eye up the attendance and I feel like it's way lower than you guys are ballparking. How many rows deep does MCU go? It seemed about 20, and the real volume was maybe 20 seats wide. So 400 guaranteed, then another maybe 150 for all the surrounding stragglers, and then to be generous another 100 for the VIP seating? If they broke 800 I'd be surprised. To be fair though, the people working concessions commented to us that the Cyclones never draw that kind of attendance. All that said I agree with everyone otherwise. Well worth the money, well booked show where everyone came to work, outside of Dalton not winning the gauntlet there's not much I can complain about. Well that an my turkey avocado wrap didn't have any damn avocado in it.
  11. Field of Honor was fun enough, definitely a lower turnout than I would have hoped if I was promoting the show. Strong/Okada delivered one hell of a match, nothing was actively bad. It was surreal and entertaining to see a pro wrestling event live in a stadium like that but I don't think I'd personally ever want to see one again.
  12. The second season is one of the best seasons of any television show ever. The first season took a little while to hit their stride, it suffered too much from Adult Swim style "how long can we drag out this gag" humor that's been done to death. But by the last few episodes you could see something special was coming together, and the finale was heartbreakingly beautiful. And then season 2 took that and ran with it into an entirely different level of being completely honest about the sweetest but more often most painful moments of being alive. It's one of the most humanizing shows I've ever seen... and more than half of the characters aren't even humans.
  13. Anyone who hasn't seen this needs to see this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0XbcNcNJgQ
  14. I thought that was hands down the best match of the Cena/Owens trilogy. They were all spotfests with weak psychology, but I thought the high pace, the crowd and the drama of it being the rubber match made everything feel more earned and made the match play out the most entertaining of the three. I do agree that Owens' work in NXT was far superior though, this feud has brought out some of his worst indy tendencies (minus the constant joking with the crowd).
  15. Episode 19 of the Wrestling Night Review Podcast is live as I join Master of Ceremonies "Furious" John Zornek and "the Modern Day Vegan Warrior" Phil Bryer for yet another recap of our favorite night of the month. http://wrestlingnight.podbean.com/e/wrestling-night-podcast-episode-19/ We had one hell of a showdown of Aces played against each other, with three matches that have coincidentally gotten the 5 spot from Meltzer, which means they must be good, right? Along with some UWF to round things out, and who doesn't love them some UWF?! Match 1: (Me) - El Samurai VS Koji Kanemoto - NJPW Best of the Super Juniors Finals 06/1997 (John) - Akira Maeda VS Kazuo Yamazaki - UWF 05/1988 Match 2: (Phil) - Akira Hokuto VS Shinobu Kandori - AJW 04/1993 (Kenny) - Stan Hansen/Terry Gordy VS Genichiro Tenryu/Toshiaki Kawada - AJPW Real World Tag League Finals 12/1988 We open things up discussing a throwaway comment Roddy Piper made on the Art of Wrestling about the differences in how he came up in the business in regards to television VS live shows. Should we be left wanting more in this day and age? Are we as wrestling fans supersaturated with big matches and big finishes? And where are we heading 10 years from now? All of this is touched on and more in the first segment. Some other topics that come up over the course of the podcast include how surprisingly handsome El Samurai is, whether or not Terry Gordy is an Animal Beast Machine, a very frank conversation with John about his weight and how his love of food applies to the movie Sleepers, how hierarchy and clear dynamics are awesome in pro wrestling and lacking in modern puro, and just what a pair of dickheaded pants would look like. Then we close out the recording discussing some of our other favorite matches of the night, such as Flair VS Steamboat from Saturday Night, Harada VS Asahi for the GHC Jr Championship, and Jim Breaks VS "Hong Kong" Sammy Lee. This episode was a blast to record and I hope it comes through when you listen!
  16. Yeah I realized this one after the fact. This is the only time we've seen SCIENCE~! resurrect someone so far, and the end result seems pretty similar to blood magic, just with more mobility and sweet new gear.
  17. For the tone that the show has set so far I'd imagine these possible fake out deaths would feel really cheap. The only people we've seen cheat death in a conclusive way either worked out terribly (Khal Drago) or is clearly one of the biggest exceptions we've been introduced to (the Brothers w/o Banners dude). I'm surprised the book readers seem so open to Jon or Stannis coming back in some way. Is stuff like this more prevalent in the books than what we've seen in the show?
  18. Yeah great episode, first truly great one of the season. And more so because the writing and the performances were so strong than because of the action. Gives me hope that they'll close out with two more episodes of the same caliber.
  19. I thought that episode was the best of the season, but that isn't saying a lot. Still a bunch I didn't like but maybe a step in the right direction.
  20. Episode 18 of the Wrestling Night Review Podcast is in the can. Once again I joined our always gracious host John Zornek and our colorman Phil Bryer to talk about what went down on our favorite day of the month. http://wrestlingnight.podbean.com/e/wrestling-night-podcast-episode-18/ There was a ton to cover as we had to resolve a tie between myself and Kenny from the previous Wrestling Night before we even got into the standard Ace competition. So the matches we compare and contrast on this episode are: Match-up 1: (Me) Terry Funk/Dory Funk Jr VS Stan Hansen/Terry Gordy - AJPW 08/1983 (Kenny) Undertaker VS CM Punk - WWE 04/2013 Match-up 2: (Phil) Ricochet VS KUSHIDA - NJPW Best of the Super Juniors Finals 06/2014 (Me) Yoshinobu Kanemaru/Makoto Hashi VS KENTA/Naomichi Marufuji - NOAH 03/2003 Match-up 3: (Kenny) Bryan Danielson VS Spanky - ROH Best of the American Super Juniors 04/2005 (John) Brock Lesnar © VS Undertaker - WWE Championship Hell In A Cell 10/2002 As you can tell, if you're a fan of the Undertaker and/or Paul Heyman, there will be plenty of content relevant to your interests in this episode. We open things up discussing some of our favorite wrestling entrance songs of all-time, as well as acknowledging that we have just passed our 11th birthday as the premier brand of sports entertainment in the world. John and I share stories about our treacherous voyage out to Asbury Park NJ when we were there live for Danielson/Spanky, I lament my love for 2003 Makoto Hashi, and at some point we cover strategy on how to beat Streets of Rage. It's all in a day's work for the WNRP and if you make it all the way to the end of the giant sized episode we may even sing you a lullaby.
  21. Without spoilers of course... are we at the point now where they have caught up to the books? Also, there's a few things that are still very interesting to me. I enjoy Queen Marg very much. and I really want to see Stannis lead his troops into battle again. Plus, it's the Boltons and fuck them. Arya's voyage has not been as interesting as I had hoped. I need Mother of Dragons to get off her ass and do something. I feel like she's been sitting around for years. Agreed on all points. Jon and Stannis are the only characters that have something compelling going on and are being still being written extremely well. Arya is one of many characters that are in the "stranded in an unfamiliar situation and need to rediscover their purpose/who they are" trope that's bogging this season down so badly. I wouldn't be so frustrated if this show, even when it had faults, wasn't so damn intelligent and rewarding for the previous 4 seasons. I keep holding out hope that an episode will just click soon but more often than not when a complex and layered show starts to go astray like this it's hard for it to get back on track.
  22. It really would be. I haven't been digging this season very much at all, and it's not just because of the slower transitional episodes that typically start the seasons off. This was the "shit gets real" episode that's supposed to hook everyone hard and it still was a major disappointment, especially after hearing there's nothing in the books they were trying to do justice with such an illogical way for the Unsullied and Barristan to go down. All around these episodes have felt like they're not dealing with the rich source material the show is typically adapting and has much more of a "made for TV" feel that most fantasy shows are plagued by.
