  1. although if it's a one-fall sort of three-way then the person making the cover on the bottom should be the winner, just to add more bureaucracy to this

  2. Felt like there was a lot of script that got left on the cutting room floor for Dracula, characters get no introduction, things like where does Dracula get his power are not explained. however I did like it being presented as a love story and Dracula's longevity being a "be careful what you wish for" curse.

  4. Stewart Lee was on the new Harry Hill podcast talking about Zach Sabre Jr using Orienteering With Napalm Death, which if you didn't know came from one of his bits, as a move name. Quite surreal hearing Stew talking about wrestling (though he does call Zach a WWF wrestler, which is kinda cringe). Anyway, I like to think I have something to do with this. I emailed in to a comedy podcast I listen to responding to the hosts talking about going to a UK indie show (one of the co-hosts seems to be a pretty big fan) to tell them about the Stew/Zach connection, and I imagine they passed that tidbit on to Stew the next time they saw him (in reality, I'm sure the one co-host, who even said he'd seen ZSJ at comedy shows before, already knew this factoid, and probably someone would already have shared this with Stew anyway, though I'd never heard him reference it before.) But until proven otherwise, I'll just pretend this was my doing.

  9. Punk wrote a story about (I think) baseball for the Strange Sports Stories mini about 10 years ago. ISTR he dropped a "Slap Shot" reference or two, like naming one of the characters Clarence "Screaming Buffalo" Swamptown.

  10. It wasn't the ACL, it was dancing on the edge and falling off. https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/47879004/lindsey-vonn-dad-says-olympic-crash-marks-end-career "What happened to her had nothing to do with the ACL issue on her left leg. Nothing," Kildow said. "She had demonstrated that she was able to function at a very high level with the two downhill training runs. ... And she had been cleared by high level physicians to ski." Kildow said the crash was less a result of Vonn's knee injury than the way she pushed the limits of her racing line to the point where she clipped a gate early in her run and got knocked out of control.

  11. i'm going off memory, but i thought he had written some story about or involving wrestling. i was going to read that one, much like Raven's Spider-Man story. Will have to dig in to see how much other stuff he has and go from there. I'm currently reading Shang-Chi: Master of Kung-Fu, and i know Punk wrote a standalone issue, presumably to curtail the '70s series? I don't know, but it is part of what's on my list for THAT project. WCW is on the list! I can't wait to compare/contrast that book with BattleMania. hmm, never heard of this one. it looks like the most tenuous of connections, but i'll keep it in mind for extra credit!

  15. I just wanted to point out that when promoting DC X AEW, Tony references "The Justice League Elite" because whoever wrote the copy didn't realize that that's the name of an actual (now dissolved) team that will absolutely not be appearing in that miniseries.

  16. Ah-ha! Found it - Fatale, from Broadway Comics (Jim Shooter's other mid 90's flop company). An actress playing her was at the 1996 Slammy Awards, handing out the Blue Light Special award. It looks like none of the wrestlers showed up in the comics before the company folded.

  17. Sometimes athletes need saving from themselves like a good corner in MMA does. Lindsey Vonn now has a broken leg requiring an operation to go with the torn ACL in the same leg. That's really bad, could have been even worse.

  20. Sorry, I'm going to call BS on the Vonn hating, she managed to do the training runs and have a near top 10 run. It's a sport that victory and a scary wipe out are on a razor thin edge, and Vonn was on the wrong side of it this time (as was another skier who was airlifted off after a crash)

  21. Enjoyed what I saw of this collaborative ROH episode. Ray Lyn looked pretty good against the returning Abadon. Very much enjoyed seeing Moriarty-Exodus Prime. I could see Prime being an ROH regular sooner than later. JD Griffery-Delynn Cavens was the kind of variety this show generally lacks. A fun match. The Deonna/Maya/Hyan-Athena/Billie/Diamante Main Event was a lot of fun. Nice seeing Purrazo again. I skimmed passed most of the first few matches. I like seeing more of these collaborative 'Global Wars' shows coming up. It's a fun idea for the ROH brand.

  26. We start off with a contract signing with a brawl because it's pro wrestling god damn it. As Booker T would say, Sibley Scoles was looking reeeal jack baby! Genesis and Ashely Blaze have a good match and no one got hurt. Veronica Varoom costs Catalina Speed her match with some mistimed interference so hopefully that should lead into something for them. The Dojo Defenders continue to slowly explode. Gabriella Cruz and Lil J Boogie had a good tag match. Ariana Gambino getting on the mic to say The Alliance dominates week after week is worth a chuckle since she took a loss the last time they were out.

  28. Mankind #1 Chaos! Comics, September 1999 by Steven Grant and Jerry Beck a homeless encampment is being forcibly evacuated by some goons, when a Wildman attacks them, enduring some punishment before chasing them off. He goes by the name of Mankind, but he doesn't know anything from his past (so obviously he must be Lost in Cleveland again...) He is most definitely insane, unhinged, and likely an escaped mental patient. He takes a liking to one little girl, Nikki, and looks to defend her. Across town, the mayor is meeting with an unnamed "Director", who agrees to clear out this encampment. So he gasses the lot and kidnaps the migrants, looking to experiment on them through surgery and chemicals. Mankind escapes, saves the little girl, and torches the facility. Two of the experiments, Brute and Force, are no match for the unpredictability of Mankind. We get an exchange that harkens back to Foley's then-current Beefaroni commercial (Force: "Taste the Power of Force!" Mankind: "Mmmm! BEEFY!" The artwork fits the house style of Chaos Comics. The page is saturated with blacks and deep colors, so it's got a pretty dark look to go along with grotesque physiques and faces. The writing is very basic in this done-in-one story. But it's effective enough in drawing on tropes and archetypes. The pace is frenetic, and motivations are clear enough.

  31. I'm with you on that hot take. Tony was better than Eli. In his last season before getting hurt, Tony put up 34/9 while leading in a bunch of stuff. The only time Eli saw those kind of numbers was when he looked at the back of his brother's football cards.

  40. Ha! I just posted in the Not from the Now thread about reading an old old Segunda Caida a minute ago where Phil reviewed a match featuring "the rarely-seen Rey Hechicero"... in 2008. 18 years later and he's what, fourth man from the top in a major American promotion's largest heel faction. (I'm guessing we go 1. Okada, 2. Takeshita, 3. Fletcher, 4. Hechicero, right?)

  43. I mean they could do the same thing they did with Joe Frazier's daughter. One day she was playing basketball somewhere with no interest in boxing, and they dug her up to go fight Laila Ali. Even with little to no boxing experience, she still was competitive with Laila so I dunno what that says about women's boxing in the early to mid 2000s.
