  1. My wife brought my laptop so I can now watch DYNAMITE on QUESTIONABLE Chinese websites. I am attached to all kinds of things- ivs, monitors, blood pressure thingy- so this may turn out odd- this, the last day of my big toe. A bit of advice, get correct footwear when you start walking. I got a blister, it got infected, I am in hell. Enough about DEAN's hilarious travails of middle age, LET'S WATCH WRESTLING! The Action Andretti/ Ricky Starks vs Chris Jericho/ Sammy Guevara match was a harbinger for what could becomea lifelong feud between Starks, Andretti, Sammy and Garcia. I love the dynamic. Starks and Andretti are building up babyface steam and Garcia and Sammy are perfecting becoming total HEAT MACHINES. You could see Jericho glowing with pride on the apron for having set up this feud. Jericho crying while being hoisted on his proteges' shoulders was one of the finest visuals in modern day wrestling. That was some quality pro wrestling. I'm trying not cry in the hospital but AEW is making it hard with the commemoration of Jay Brisco. The House Of Black theme song sounds like Mastodon! That's how out of it I am! Darby Allin is on a very large roll and he is now an INTERNATIONAL superstar! I await Kitomiya vs Darby Allin for the GBH title. Buddy Matthews is the best wrestler in AEW who doesn't get enough TV time. He is like Brodie King but slicker. Buddy Mathews should be in the Takeshita/Bandido/Jack Perry rising star category. This match is fucking great. It was one half Allin/King and one half Allin/Kushida- in that was an early complete assbeating but moves into more elaborate style of assbeating. The Cannonball into the corner was fucking gnarly. The Toprope Scorpion Deathdrop needs a little work. Overall, I WANT MORE BUDDY MATTHEWS! ETHAN PAGE DANCES ON TV! FINALLY! A nation turns it's eyes at you! This match was cool because the average wisdom is that Jack Perry will work the body of the match and he tags in Hook who demolishes everyone and that's that. The conventional wisdom is that Matt Hardy would wrestle as reluctant heel. EN LIEU! Jack Perry works the body of the match AND finishes the match with his great submission. AND Matt Hardy wrestles TOTAL heel, not by cheating but by beating the hell out Perry using great old school heel tactics. Matt Hardy IS Dennis Condrey. Ethan Page is such a GREAT flaming asshole. We are truly blessed. Brian Cage is a good luchadore. He is a good version of Cibernetico. Here he has an old school US pro style psychology match assuming the roll of someone Terry Funk would hire to take out Cowboy Bob Ellis. It was a good match but not the best style match for Cage, because he is so much more than basic power moves. Danielson wanted to do a match where was the overwhelmed babyface underdog and have Cage be Kain. It was good, just different- he went all angle this week and not all workrate. KONOSUKE TAKESHITA! Saves AmDrag! Machine vs Lard Lad will RULE! JESUS CHRIST, RUBY SOHO AND TONI STORM BEAT THE LIVING DOGSHIT OUT OF EACH OTHER! WAS THIS THE STIFFEST MATCH IN THE HISTORY OF AEW WOMEN'S WRESTLING? I can't think of one. Toni Storm is GREAT heel. Ruby Soho is GREAT babyface. DOUBLE DANGEROUS BACKDROPS! SOHO! SOHO! SOHO! GREATEST WRECKEM EVER! TONI STORM! TONI STORM! I totally LOVED that they used a five second distraction to replace a crappy three way into the stiffest match until we finally get Jamie Hayter vs Athena. BRAVO, LADIES! Jesus! JAMIE HAYTER vs EMI! THAT may be stiffest match. That main event was emotional. Man. AEW rules the motherfucking world.

  3. Not a clunker in the lot even the "worst" match (Danielson vs Cage) was more than passable. We are so spoiled I'll say it for our hospitalized leader. AEW rules the motherfucking universe.

  4. It's a fucking travesty that it took one of the Briscoes literally dying for them to make TV. Watching the main, it'd be easy to get the two guys mixed up and go "wait, which one's brother died?" Lethal was clearly a mess and had bawled his eyes out before he even went through the curtain while Mark was all BOY HOWDY REACH FOR THE SKY HYUK HYUK HYUK like nothing had even happened. Mark is a pro beyond pros to flip that switch and go out there for a match like that... and what a match it was. For all the shit Lethal gets, he's way better than a ton of folks will ever give him credit for - you think guys like Mark and Ric F'N Flair would give him a position like this if he couldn't deliver the goods upon request? Come on.

  9. I still hold out hope for Zack Sabre Jr as the final dude. The best Gotch/ Volk Han style guys from two feuding Japanese companies in back to back weeks is the nerdiest booking in the history of pro wrestling. I mean, THAT'S WHY THIS BOARD HIRED TONY KHAN TO RUN AEW!

  10. One thing I liked about the commentary at the start of the Briscoe tribute was someone (probably Ian) saying that people grieve in different ways and on different timelines.

  11. An even more obvious problem with this theory: why would you lie about and defame the WBD execs who hold the fate of your company in their hand? That would seem to be a monumentally stupid idea on multiple levels.

  12. I am perpetually amazed that I named my previous dog for Emi. In 1998. And here she is literally 25 years later... still wrestling, in the US, on a major network, and getting built up for title matches. Mind-boggling.

  15. Damn Dean. Get well soon. Show was really good with plenty of great moments. Ricky Starks is fucking over, daddy. "WE WANT RICKY" chants? Hell yeah. This is the exposure I've been wanting Hook to get. He totally was a rookie of the year last year. This year is his year to firmly show everyone he's here to fuck people up. I hope he has some Taz promos in him. Hearing Taz talk tough and run people down back in the day was awesome. Hearing the same from Hook would rule. Darby is fucking crazy. I don't think I've been able to go any show with Darby on it and not say that. Darby vs Joe No Holds Barred? Holy shit. Someone is going to die. I don't have much to say about the Danielson match, but it's all building to him losing to the Salt of the Earth so whatever. At least we get mostly banger matches leading up Danielson vs MJF. For a brief moment when MJF started talking about Danielson's next opponent, I really thought they actually got ZSJ. I'll take Timothy Thatcher as Danielson's next opponent though. The final opponent is going to have to be someone big. Ruby has been on a tear since coming back. I thought her initial run leading up to getting a nose job was a little shaky. She really seems to have settled in and found herself since returning. Honestly, the only things I wasn't thrilled with was the WWE shit in the Ruby match where they hit someone's music to distract the heel and the family therapy segment. I just don't want that shit in AEW. Main event had me teary eyed. Lethal's eyes were so puffy from crying and the dude was trying to hold it all in/back walking out to the ring and in the ring. Then Mark comes out and I couldn't help but smile. Good ol' Chicken. Lethal and Mark do some old fashioned rasslin' until it comes to the chopping and then Mark goes, verbatim, oh, it's going to be like that? And from that point on I think there was maybe this feeling of catharsis for Lethal because for a moment, he was able to stop feeling sad and able to at least have some fun and it was the Jay Briscoes brother of all people to make that happen. Jay and Mark live and lived for this shit. They were nothing but professionals in this sport from the time they were kids to now. It really is something else. They're some of the most pro wrestling motherfuckers people that have ever been in this business. Seeing Mark out there last night made me think that he'll be able to carry that legacy on without Jay just fine. It's always going to sting whenever I see Mark out there, but Mark's wrestling and antics almost say, "it's alright folks, everything's going to be alright, now watch this hillbilly kung fu."

  16. -Death, taxes, Ricky Starks being over as hell. Fun tag, and I understood the finish. Hopefully Starks gets his decisive blowoff so he can move on. He can't be in position to take the belt off of MJF in nine months if he doesn't get on a tear. Andretti was clearly the greenest guy in the ring, but I thought he did ok. -It felt like Cage and Danielson just never got to that high gear. I did think Cage did a good job taking care of Danielson ie. making shit look horrifying without it actually doing damage. Takeshita coming out ruled, but I'm not sure why MJF would run from him. -Adam Cole's back? Don't care. Just not for me. If I thought he'd be coming back in the spot he belongs, which is as a mid card heel, it'd be one thing, but TK is gonna shove this guy down everyone's throat based on one rating he popped 2-3 years ago and the live audience being into his theme song. It sucks, but iiwii. -JungleHook could be a thing if they want it to be. Two over young babyfaces kicking ass? Yeah, I'm into that. I'm just not sure that's the best use of either guy. Ethan Page has found a bit of a groove. -The Gunn/Acclaimed segment wasn't for me. The tall Ass Boy just doesn't have the charisma his brother does, but the short Ass Boy isn't the worker Tall Ass is. It's a conundrum. -Matthews/Allin was the good professional wrestling. Buddy Matthews is good at this shit. I'd love to see a scenario where all the HOB guys are strapped up. Trios titles, Buddy with the AA, Malakai with the TNT or World. Brody as the enforcer. Get these guys some damn titles. I foresee a Joe title win next week. Unless Wardlow returns to cost Joe the match. -Women's match was good. Ruby must really enjoy being injured, because it feels like she's always taking insane bumps. Nice to see her get a big win on tv. -I'm tired of MJF. I just think there's better choices. -I got emotional during the main event. I think there's something therapeutic about engaging in a loved one's passion after losing that loved one, like the night the Marlins played after Jose Fernandez passed or Hart/Benoit. What a wonderful evening.

  17. Actually, Tony Khan backward is Nahk ynot. Nah. K. Y not? Or... No. OK. Why not? Which is EXACTLY what a con man (Khan man!) would say to a rube before ripping him off! Coincidence? Yes. It's a coincidence.

  19. Great tribute to Jay, really couldn't have asked for more. This was the wrestling death that's hit me harder than any other in years so seeing Mark get such a pop and come out fired up was wonderful. Lethal in pieces was a massive gut punch but god bless them for that match. Both Darby vs Buddy and Danielson vs Cage were the worst match Darby and Danielson have had in a while. I've come to the opinion Matthews isn't that good on his own. He's a spot guy who's spots are all stolen from Seth Rollins of all people and he doesn't offer much in between them. Cage has been a known hack for about 10 years now and didn't impress at all. Booking a match around him working an arm doesn't really play to his strengths, but seeing him do flimsy Adam Cole superkicks instead of actual big man offence is painful. Danielson had a better match with Big Cass. I did like Takeshita making the save (minus that awful exchange with Cage). Hopefully we get MJF vs Takeshita at some point, that could be a fun clash of styles. JAS beat Starks and Andretti so that feud obviously now has to continue until the PPV rather than letting Starks move on to something more exciting. Storm/Saraya doing an 'WWE superstar' schtick against 'AEW originals' feels pretty hackneyed. Granted Saraya has been super unlikeable since debuting but I don't think Storm has the personality for this role. Is Britt a babyface now as a result? Basically this was the weakest Dynamite in ages, save for the main event which still made it feel special. Next week's card looks cool - Danielson vs Thatcher and Darby vs III let's gooooooo

  20. Totally agree. I was happy that the family therapy thing was short and actually went in a better direction than I thought it would. I thought it was going to be a "comedy" segment, but they went in a more "real", serious direction and I think it worked. But, again, it worked because it was short.

  21. Yeah, I can corroborate that - I've 100% seen confederate flags out in the sticks near the CT/RI casinos. They did a Rampage out there in October that we drove up to, and Nyla tweeted something about "Rampage, Live from the fucking Hills Have Eyes" which, I can't even lie, got a huge pop outta me. Edit: I got one for you I just remembered - I did a job once in New Hampshire, and the person met me outside in a t-shirt with a picture of a stork on it that said "EVERYTHING ELSE WAS BROUGHT TO YOU IN A FUCKIN' TRUCK" - doesn't get much more country than that, I don't think.

  22. I want to say two things. First, Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman are just top notch, world class commentators who did justice to the moment as expected. Those two guys could be commentating for AEW if they wanted to. Secondly, hats off to Jay Lethal man. This is a guy who was entrusted with helping work old ass Ric Flair's "last match" and now working the tribute match to Jay Briscoe with Mark. You could see he was torn up and rightfully so. It's always so weird to see such emotion on everyone elses faces, but then there's Mark just doing his thing. Him speaking to the camera at the end got me. Also would love an FTR/Mark Briscoe 6 man team. Really hope he gets to join the main roster.

  23. IIRC, it was also said that Mark Briscoe had the highest IQ in the ROH locker room. I knew it all along that Mark Briscoe was actually a genius playing the role of a simpleton to throw his opponents off.

  24. There were also two Liger bombs for nearfalls... in both the first AND second matches. Really guys, get your shit together. Then again, we also got a Scott Norton Shoulderbreaker so maybe I shouldn't complain. Speaking of which, since Cage is getting shit on I feel like I have to defend him here a bit. He was a workhorse slotted in there to do a job, which is advance the angle that MJF is trying to break Bryan's arm, and he did that job perfectly well along with some Kanyon-esque twists on moves to add in impact on the shoulder. It also helps that Bryan's selling is terrifying these days. When he took the bump in the corner I was scared and when he started selling on the floor I was seriously concerned. That is pro wrestling, folks. There was a hilarious moment where Riccaboni called Mark "always thinking" and a strategist. Yes, Mark Briscoe, the man always ten steps ahead! EDIT: You know what? This is the wrong show to complain about MOVEZ. These cats are grieving, they deserve a break.

  26. @DEAN best wishes. Your regular reporting is easily my favorite wrestling writing going on. This week in particularly I love your review of the opener… Very nice and touching Jay Briscoe commemoration video. Great thanks and love to Jay Briscoe. Odd follow-up with the House of Black. Buddy Matthews in ring movement is incredible. I too think I might prefer him better in a tag team. I kept thinking during this match what he and Westin Blake might look like as a tag team in 2023. Note: I never saw them in NXT, but I've only heard good things. Buddy here with Darby looked like a potential threat and it says something for what he and Darby put together. This was the kind of solid wrestling that easily gets overlooked due to the ridiculously high bar. I liked this match, and I loved the King of Television's challenge that followed. Joe just fuckin' kills it every week! All the video packages were really good to great this week. The Mansury signing continues to show strong (if quiet) improvements. Nice to see Ethan Page get his Dark intro on TV. Although, his scatting over the classic Hardy theme, as seen on recent Darks, is more effective. I love the 'Million Dollar Corporation' era Nikolai Volkoff-Matt Hardy comparison a page or so back. Matt Hardy is still a very good tag team wrestler. As per @DEAN Jungle Boy and Hook are a terrific duo. I was fully expecting to need a skim of the Family Therapy, but they played it so well. It also ended up being a lot funnier than the previous comedy segments. I really like this Renee interviewing Hangman scenario. Yuta-Page, right on. How does Moxley-Page 3 play out? I'm intrigued. Man, people hate Brian Cage. Pretty harsh for a guy that kinda always has fun matches in AEW. @DEAN nails it here... Takeshita-Cage will indeed rule. As will any Takeshita-Danielson tags we might find ourselves wandering into. The post match beatdown and save was nicely executed. The Danielson promo was top notch too. Thatcher-Danielson is such a fun booking. What I saw of Ruby-Toni was excellent. Incredible Hip Attacks. Lame finish, but I like as somebody previously pointed out that she didn't get rolled up, but rather lost after her opponent used the distraction to hit her finisher. I'm going back to this after DEAN's great review... It's nice to see some more ppl this week giving Jay Lethal his well deserved flowers. He's had nothing but fun matches since his signing. Lethal's tears in the pre-match brought such humanity. Then Mark strolls out like the goddamn pro he is! I felt such deep love for Mark here. Truly inspiring seeing what these guys did in this match. The post match really cut in deep. Jay is clearly such a huge loss, but Mark carrying their legacy foward is kind of an extraordinary and exciting thing to see grow.

  27. ....which is why Mick Foley is fucking nuts for letting Chyna slam the door of that blue cage on his head. I believe he said that was in the top 5 or 10 list of his most painful experiences in his career.

  28. I liked the Gunns pointing out how actually they were the ones being nice to The Accclaimed and they got screwed over I'm not sure if that actually adds up, but since this is all cosplaying 99 WWF it makes more sense if the babyfaces are the heels and none of it makes sense on a shot by shot replay

  29. The only saving grace to the stupid finish is that Ruby used the distraction to hit her finisher, rather than Toni being so shocked that a wrestler is standing on the ramp of a wrestling show that she was totally incapacitated and lost to a roll up

  31. I oddly really, really like this - I hesitate to make the comparison cause they're way different workers, but in terms of his placement, I'm picturing something like Dr Death with the Varsity Club. Actually, you could probably have done a lot worse than a 'Revenge of the Nerds' angle with Cage backing up the Varsity Blondes in the Ogre role against Best Friends or someone like that.

  34. hopefully this cheers DEAN up. from the international feed, during the Danielson-Cage match: Tony: "you can hear Prince on the outside, trying to drive his spirits down, trying to intimidate him, which I don't think he can do to be honest with you..." X: "Prince Nana.....not Prince the musician" Tony: "..........yes, Prince Nana!!! not Prince the Musician!!! X: "I just wanted to clairfy" Tony: "You don't have to clairfy! because Prince the musician is DEAD!!!" *Taz and X like wtf* but this actually led to Tony putting Prince Nana over, saying that last week when MJF told him it was more money than he'd ever seen he calls bullshit because HE'S PRINCE F'N NANA and he's seen all sorts of money!! Thank you Tony! Toni nailed an awesome ass attack early in their match with Ruby caught in the ropes, then killed her later on in the corner which I totally buy as the setup to the finish every time. Her ass-based offense is the best thing going and she needs to add more to the arsenal Loved the Briscoe match. Shame it took Jay dying for them to get on TV. Loved Mark with both the belts and them announcing him as one half of the ROH Tag Team Champions. My favorite little moment from the match was when Mark rolled to the outside after Lethal hit a big Lethal Injection and a fan front row was like, "Ya gotta do it man! ya gotta do it" hahaha. I also loved how they teased Mark hitting the Jay Driller, especially at the end. *****

  36. I am normally not a fan of Brian Cage matches, nor did I ever think I would be in a position to be his defender. Tonight's match being flat was NOT the fault of Brian Cage. From a storyline standpoint, he did exactly what he was supposed to do. From an in-ring standpoint, I feel like Daniel Bryan called a flat match. Maybe he underestimated what Cage was capable of physically in the ring, and called based on that; but Cage did fine with what he was given. The opener was great. Lexington loves Ricky Starks! Daniel Garcia is awesome and continues to show ever increasing charisma and personality week by week. Lexington loves Takeshita! MJF with the "not the first time a Jew had to hide from a blue eyed man" line? I did Nazi that coming; Anne Frankly, it shouldn't have been said. Wow! Buddy Matthews is really good at the whole wrestling thing. Ruby Soho and Toni Storm just walloped the stuffing out of each other. It was a ton of fun to watch, although I can never tell if Ruby is a brilliant seller or always on the cusp of a concussion. The main. What can I say? I was already in tears before Mark came down. I saw the one tag title and thought "Man, he should have had both". Then he pulls the other one out of his shirt. I lost it. Brilliant match. I don't know how they managed to do it. I knew he was going to hit the Jay driller, but the false starts added to an already poignant match. Well done. Having watched a lot of Briscoe promos the past week, I am not suprised by Ian Riccaboni's statement that Mark is the smartest man in the ROH locker room. If you pay attention, you will notice some of the pacing and words he chooses; and you will see that there is a lot going on there.

  37. underestimate a guy that is missing a few front teeth at your own risk anyways.. didn't Buddy and Cage both do some variant of a back suplex on the apron in their matches? overly insider baseball gimmick: a wrestler whose moveset sometimes openly steals moves from matches earlier in the show.. a man who is unstoppable later in cards, but also helpless if he opens a card because he hasn't seen any hot moves to steal

  42. MJF ran because he's a coward when the chips are down, plus he knows the entire locker room hates him. Literally doesn't matter... he heard the crowd react because SOMEONE was making the save and he bugged out to save himself. Good match, but annoying. Did Buddy even try to target Darby's obviously injured leg? Just the missed opportunity of all missed opportunities not to focus on that.

Personally, I'd like to see Mark vacate the tag titles and go after the ROH world title. Then, have new tag champions crowned in the first ever Jay Briscoe Memorial tag team tournament.

And still put on a really good match and thank god we got Ian Riccaboni on commentary. 47. The closeup of Flair’s face was scary af at the time. I wish they would have done a little more with it. They didn’t even acknowledge it on TV. They just said somewhere in hour 2 that o yeah Ric is injured. I would go as far as to say that had then been exploited properly, it could have been as big of a freak out as some of the doomier stuff that Foley, Undertaker, or Jake did in the WWF. They really missed on that very good idea that somebody grabbed out of nowhere. WCW had the best ideas. I’ve said the 1000 times. They just didn’t know how to use them.
