  1. The lights go off, a chorus of voices is heard, then... Spotlight on a manger scene Brandi is dressed as Mary. Dustin is Joseph. Arn, Malenko, and Lynn as the Three Wise Men. Fuego is a donkey. Pyro goes off. Cody emerges from the manger inexplicably dressed as an adult Jesus with an American flag sash. The crowd goes wild and Cody is never boo'ed again

  2. Facebook just reminded me that this was ten years ago. I met "The Beast" Bob Sapp at a hotpot party organized by a fight promoter in Kobe. He could not have been nicer. One of my happiest memories.

  5. My three favourite terrible matches I've seen live: WCW: Lance Storm vs Mike Awesome. Easy thing to book, have Awesome beat up Storm then Team Canada cheat to win, Storm would get cheered regardless as it was in Canada. Instead it was some mess with Ernest Miller refereeing even though he was the face commissioner trying to mess with the de-facto face Storm. The main even was Godlberg giving Midajah a Jackhammer backstage through a table that we couldn't even see from our seats. WWE: Vince McMahon vs Brock Lesnar (Steel Cage Match) This was absolutely hilarious in person as the audience was sure they were going to get Lesnar demolishing Vince, only for it to be an angle for Lesnar to turn on Angle. People were FURIOUS. Indy: Probably the one ECCW battle royal where someone got hurt the night before and someone else didn't make it. So the card was shortened to 6 matches, with wrestlers obviously pulling double-duty under masks without even trying to hide it and someone forgot to bring the music so nearly everyone came out to "Rock n Roll All Night" by Kiss which was really funny when the music would stop, then start from the beginning again for the opponent. Main Event was a battle royal with all the same wrestlers who had previously wrestled (I think it was a 7 man battle royal). I think they continued to play "Rock n Roll All Night" through the match, too. Local favourite Juggernaut who was a big 400 lb hardcore guy, stood in the corner chatting to one of his opponents instead of doing something, another wrestler came up behind him and hit him in the back with a double-axehandle type-of strike and instead of selling it, he turned around and yelled at the guy for disrupting his conversation, he then walked over to the ropes, stepped over and eliminated himself and just left. It was honestly one of the funniest things I've seen, but did feel like a waste of $20

  6. So apparently the Saints tried to convince Drew Brees to come out of retirement since they have no one to play QB Brees' response was to send them a photo of himself golfing

  9. My Christmas story this year: One of my students offered to give me a large parcel of unused land as a gift, but considering that I'd have to pay taxes on it and I don't have the funds to develop the land, I regretfully had to tell him, "I don't want a lot for Christmas." Anyway, thanks for, in a very real way, helping me get through pandemic times. I'm quite sure I'm not the only one.

  10. Jungle Boy vs. Isiah Kassidy ? Hook vs. Bear Bronson ? “Legit” Leyla Hirsch vs. Kris Statlander ? TNT Championship Match: Sammy Guevara (c) vs. Cody Rhodes ? I'm marking out for Legit Leyla and Bear Country on TV. Also wanna see if Hook can toss a big man around. Every one of those matches has the potential to steal the show, and all of them should be very good at the very least. Merry Christmas, everyone!

  15. I'll be that guy. Two matches in and Hook's no-selling a Fire Thunder Driver from a guy twice his size. Already we're going from really organic and fun hype to dumb, forced stuff. This isn't Hook's bad, this is troubling booking. Hated it~

  16. In 2018, I saw The Rock & Roll Express fight some masked guys with a Russian gimmick in a cage at a local house show. It took the ring crew like 20 minutes to set up the cage and the match itself was only about 5 minutes. I saw the "Russians" in the bathroom line before the match without their masks on and they looked like two guys who went to a high school near me (couldn't confirm). Nikita Koloff was there signing autographs before and I remember thinking, "I'm in better shape than either of those two guys. Even though I'm black, they could've thrown a mask on me and had me and 60 year old Nikita Koloff go out there in street clothes and we'd be more convincing Russians than those dudes."

  20. Tie Cactus Jack vs Sting Beach Blast 92-Best graduation gift I got was tickets to this PPV Steve Anthony vs Apoc for the BIW Southern heavyweight title-Happened this year in January, ended an almost 3 year long feud. IF Apoc lost he had to retire from BIW,if Steve lost he lost his title and had to get his head shaved. The Pop when APOC won was so loud!

  24. Wishing the DVDVR MB family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in the testing circumstances we all find ourselves in with the coronavirus pandemic. We have a great community here with shared interests, looking out for each other and offering support. I've been here since September 2005 and this is my favourite message board I've ever joined. Thanks for making it so. Love, Paul xxx.

  30. So I really like the reboot overall. It's back to something of a true developmental show and not an indie alternative. With that said, I'm not sure if that should be a 2 hour show on a cable network but I'll keep watching. Also, I have a feeling that most of these folks with over the top gimmicks will be something else once they hit the main roster.

  33. Gonna divide it up to indies and other. Indies-Jess E Dalton vs Ashton Spears Battlezone in Columbia MS. Jess E is so out of shape he was sucking wind from just walking to the ring. Less than 2 minutes into the match he told Ashton loudly "GO HOME I CANT BREATHE!" and the match went on another 10 minutes. Other-I remember a really bad 2 cool vs some no names match from a Raw I hit up a long time ago.

  35. Yes. This is common denominator, generic, easily digested dirge. If you found the first 3 tenuous/humourless/overbearing you will probably love this one. There is nothing in the style or mythology or dialogue or cinematography of this film that is redolent of the trilogy, names of a handful of characters aside. The best relevant comparison I could give is that if you watch AEW from time to time think of this as you would think of BTE/The Dark Order being an art form descended from late 90s/very early 00s pro wrestling and bingo - you’re there.

  39. 4/9/90: Tenryu vs Taue: Great sprint but only because Taue was absolutely fighting for his life. He takes it right to Tenryu because he knows the second Tenryu gets back on offense, he is going to legitimately hurt him. But so long as Taue deserves to be in control, Tenryu will let him. That means taking it to the floor and smashing him with a chair and coming back off a reverse whip into the rail immediately. It's all driven by fear though, and as such, it can't last. It doesn't deserve to last. So Tenryu takes over, but then something happens. Taue comes back and in the comeback, that fear starts to become something more akin to confidence. Taue was huge. He was bigger than his peers. He was stronger than his peers. He was physically imposing. And maybe, finally, as he fights for his life against Tenryu, he starts to realize it. His dropkick doesn't just get swatted away but drives Tenryu into the corner. He locks on a proto-Nodowa and drives him down. He goes to the top (ok, this was a mistake). It doesn't matter in the end, because the back brain kick and the power bomb loom like destiny, but you watch this and wonder if a switch finally flipped in Akira Taue. When the bell rang, Tenryu was a monster. What he did here and in the matches prior was abuse. But maybe, just maybe, it worked when nothing else could in this unyielding, unforgiving environment? 4/13/90: Jake Roberts vs Big Bossman: Humor me. This was post face-turn Bossman. It was a year+ before Jake's heel turn. They booked the match to get Bossman's size and Jake's gimmick on the show, I imagine. After some feeling out and Jake trying to chip at Bossman's arm, the roles settle in. Bossman's the aggressor and as the fans turn on him more and more, he's the heel. I haven't seen a lot of late, late 89 heel Bossman recently, but he'll have put on quite a bit more mass before he turns heel again in 94. Here he's slimmer and can move around well and really leans in on Jake. Ultimately, he's going to miss a top rope splash and really bump across the ring, which the crowd appreciates, but Jake can only capitalize so much. It'll be a DDT out of nowhere that wins him the day. You watch this and it's not so surprising that Bossman'll be back in a few years. 4/13/90: Andre/Baba vs Demolition: I love Andre vs Demolition and it's great to see the face/heel roles reversed. Darsow stooging for Baba at the start is solid stuff. There's glee on Baba's face the first time he tags in Andre, both as a businessman and a wrestler. Andre is, of course, almost completely immobile at this point but it doesn't matter. He needs the help of the rope to miss an elbow drop and once he does, Demolition takes over as only they can. They swarm down upon him with clubbering shots, but all it takes is one touch from Andre for Ax to go flying and rush over to tag Smash, who comes in and does the same thing. It's perfect pro wrestling. They knew the importance, the presence, the connection to the crowd, the symbolic meaning of Andre. It was on them to chip away at him but to also respond accordingly at his touch. So long as they did that, so long as they respected it, so long as they made full use of it, the crowd would explode every time it happened. Andre is potential energy at this point and it's up to his timing and his opponent's reactions to turn it into kinetic gold. Demolition understood that as well as anyone. He was as valuable a resource as ever existed in wrestling and they made the very most of it.
