  3. 200,000+ people are dead. I've known 7 of them. My friend Matt was in the ICU for 2 months. All I know is he'd better not have infected Joe.

  4. I've been having psychological issues lately. I don't want to go too much into detail but suffice to say my massive downturn in posting over the last week has been largely in part to me being busy seeking professional help. Lately I've also just been cutting down a bit on online time in general. I'm trying out some medications that can hopefully get me back on track. I just want to say that as a long time member here I appreciate what a welcome distraction it has been for me over the years, especially during a 2020 that has been a really hard year on me. I'm not looking for sympathy or pats on the back. I just felt like sharing here since I probably have as much of an online stamp here as I do anywhere. All I ask of people is that if you know people in your life having mental health troubles, I know they can be a challenge to deal with. But please try and remember, whether it's someone with a mild case of OCD or an elderly person fighting dementia, or any of the thousands of points in between, none of us asked to get sick. Just treat people with some compassion.

  5. You know damn well that Gene would be like, "What WORLD LEADER has recently fallen ill? Find out tonight on the hotline after Nitro!" and then it would end up being that the mayor of Paducah has a regular ass cold.

  11. Baker came back from a layoff and had the best match I've seen her in not involving Shida or Riho, and all JR could talk about was how big her shoulders are. That's not a problem? What if Patrick Mahomes came back from injury, threw six touchdowns, and all Joe Buck could talk about was how big his guns looked? As far as racism in commentary goes, I literally said in my post that there have been studies and I specifically mentioned the one about portrayal of black QBs and white QBs. It's something you can go look up. To sum up, white athletes are typically described as owing their success to their intelligence and drive, while black athletes are described as owning their successes solely to their physical attributes. So yes, saying nothing about a black wrestler except "she's athletic" has roots in systemic racism. But why read up on something when it's easier to just say something's not true? It's 2020, that's how we do it now I guess.

  18. I love the Shane Black-ness of IM3, but I also really don’t like the Marvel-ness of it all. The Mandarin thing is a perfect distillation of that conflict. On one hand, I thought the reveal was hilarious at the time and Kingsley is still funny to me now. And I always appreciate a solid “You should be less afraid of these media-created boogie men and more afraid of the suits behind it all” story. On the other hand, doing away with a compelling, iconic villain just so they could do yet ANOTHER “evil business guy” and have a bunch of cartoons fight each other in the end...that part of it sucked.

  19. It really comes down the the kayfabe vs real life weirdness of wrestling. These are people playing roles on TV. The producers of Breaking Bad never stopped Bryan Cranston from profiting off anything else while he was portraying Walter White. But we don't refer to wrestlers as people playing characters, like if a wrestler appears on a mainstream TV show, they're not going by their real names. We don't see, "on this episode of Entertainment Tonight, we have Joe Anoa', who plays the role of Roman Reigns on the popular TV show WWE Smackdown!" Because wrestling was portrayed as real long past the point of all logic, we have this incredibly weird thing that's fake but not fake. All this is to say that I can see wrestlers being forbidden from doing outside stuff while under contract because Joe Anoa'i does not exist outside Roman Reigns. Wrestling is fucking weird. The only thing I see wrong with it is that they're supposed to be independent contractors. I can't tell the guy who fixed my HVAC that he can't make money on Twitch for fuck's sake. If you want these guys to not profit from anything else, then give them a union, give them benefits, and call them employees. On a side note, this weirdness where the real people are inseparable from the roles they play is a big part of why wrestling will never be taken seriously.

  20. I wasn't going to say anything considering Jae's reminder two days ago. And for all I know I'd have just said something like "Oh, sweet irony!" But then I went elsewhere (Ars Tecnica for those curious) and the person that said this is on the money. "I’m going to effectively re-post what I said elsewhere. I go back and forth nearly constantly about whether I think that he is telling the truth. But, presuming it’s true, I will not be wishing for his death. I will, however, wish that he has to live worrying and wondering, panicking at every sniffle, sneeze, or cough. Having to accept that at the second there’s a significant sign of a symptom, he’s going to have to be rushed to a hospital, where he’ll have a ventilator standing by, not knowing until they force him into it whether it’ll be medically necessary. I don’t wish him death. I wish him FEAR. I wish him to know the abject terror many people are feeling right now."

  21. "Bret can't take bumps due to his stroke and all that. Okay, cool, so Vince can't really get any offense. No problem, we can do some smoke and mirrors for three minutes, Bret can then whip his ass for another two or three. That'll be fine." "What about the other 15 minutes?" "The what?" "It's scheduled for twenty." "Can't we give ten more to Rey and Punk?"

  23. I had the opportunity to watch the afternoon show from the 23rd and I really enjoyed it a lot. In particular, I thought that Katsuhiko Nakajima vs Shuhei Taniguchi was a flat-out great pro wrestling match. Nakajima was such a nasty violent prick, but Taniguchi just kept gutting it out... it wasn't until the announcers said something about "Maybach" that I even realised who Tanaguchi is. Damn, that dude has come a long way since last I saw him! I went back to look at Z's post, and was pleased to see that he recommended that match too. I also got a huge kick out of seeing my old Osaka Pro buddies Harada and Kotoge in the six-man opener, though I'm not sure how I feel about Kotoge's new biker gimmick. I have to say, I didn't really notice a lot of "early mat work leading nowhere" on this show. The worst thing about it, for me, was that I simply cannot buy into Kenoh as an unstoppable killing machine. There's a whole trend in Japanese pop culture of weenie and/or effeminate pretty boy being portrayed that way. It can work OK in pro wrestling (like, for example, with Ibushi right now). And I can easily buy into smaller or less powerful-looking guys beating big monsters if it's worked well... but ... I understand Kenoh is way above Yoshiki Inamura in the pecking order, but the young guy easily has 50 or 60 pounds on him. Kenoh just laughing off Inamura's offense then knocking him unconscious absolutely did not work for me. I'm hoping I'll get the chance to watch more NOAH and AJPW this year... but I barely have time to keep up with New Japan and AEW...

  30. Of course Bryan Danielson can go back to the indies or whatever post-WWE and use his real name. Same thing for Miro currently. It’s only within the length of the contract that they “own” their real name, I’d imagine. For all intents and purposes, WWE owns everything about you because your face and personality is closely linked to your on-screen gimmick. Even using your real name for other things, you’re entire being is swirled in with your public persona unfortunately. ”Brianna Danielson” can appear on YouTube or whatever, but someone sees her and she’s Brie Bella in their mind if they know wrestling. Claudio Castagnoli is an actual person, but he’s Cesaro to most people because he’s on TV all the time (lately). Austin Watson/Creed is Xavier Woods to MOST (not all) people watching his YouTube channel. It’s shitty as fuck.

  31. Every single decision regarding labor in WWE comes down to, "what's the most evil thing we can do? Do that!" At this rate, why wouldn't every wrestler just shut down their Twitch? Court doesn't matter. The US legal system is so broken that, as @Phantom Lordalluded to, even if you're right and have a great chance of winning, you'd lose your ass in legal fees. 2021 is going to be crazy if Biden wins and Yang is put into a position where he can go after WWE for this kind of shit.

  32. It's weird that there's not much talk but there really should be. Not only has he shown more of how great he is with wrestling and promos. But the guy in the truest sense is proof that you don't need WWE to be a star. He was dealt a shit hand there and left to make a name for himself. If I was a WWE wrestler I'd look at him and go "Damn, how fast can I get out of this contract and how soon can I get to Japan?"

  33. IIRC, I think Raven and Buff Bagwell's lawsuit over copyright issues, the independent contractor designation and royalties actually did have legs and they likely would've won but the statute of limitations had run out. If someone more current brought up the same issues, there's a good chance they'd win.

  37. Up to Day 7. I'll just keep to the notables for now. - Is it me or is Yujiro showing some mild babyface fire and sympathetic traits? - Cobb v Ibushi was what this tournament perhaps needs more of: short, energetic, clean finish with not too much spam. - Willing to be patient while Okada does the 2020 version of the balloon gimmick. Bad back, new finisher (which I like!), go with it, use the G1 to test it. - Ishii v Shingo was a delight for me. Fair enough if you couldn't buy any pinfall attempt pre-finish but I just like seeing them mix it.
