  11. To Matt's point about Johnson's self awareness, there are several times where the joke is on Rey, seemingly to let the air out of the Mary Sue balloon (Luke screwing with her when she reaches her hand out during meditation training, Snoke smacking her upside her head for attempting to steal the saber with the Force, etc.)

  12. At what point did Rey kick Kylo's ass in TLJ? Must have missed it. At what point did she prove to be a better Jedi than Luke? She barely even uses her powers in this film. Luke's out here force projecting himself across the galaxy.

  13. I love the name Macho Sasquatcho. I saw it pop up somewhere on a wrestling site in the late 90s and it stuck with me. Never looked him up till now. I did not expect a ratty Chewbacca Halloween costume, but it makes it even better than what I imagined.

  19. One of my favorite things about this movie, maybe my absolute favorite, is how it gets back to the core values of the Force after it had devolved into merely being this power you could harness to perform spectacular violence post-ROTJ. Even George kinda lost sight of that in his later years (unless, as suggested, he meant to imply that the Jedi becoming Galaxy Police and attempting to enforce "order" across the galaxy was a bad thing and led to their downfall). I'm a huge fan of THE LEFTOVERS (and I am ALL IN on "Master Codebreaker" being another of Kevin Garvey's afterlife personas), so I loved the subtle implication that the Jedi religion, like every othe religion ever, is just a vain attempt to assign meaning to something that's inherently unknowable. I feel like they got as close as they possibly could to saying that without fucking with the Mouse's money.

  20. I have used humor most of my life to get thru some very bad times. Always at my own expense, because I never want to belittle anyones pain. My mother died ten years ago. Her final four years were not easy to deal with. My father and her mother dying so close together did something to her mind. She always had problems. But this pushed her past the point of no return. That, existing mental illness, a drug problem and letting her diabetes run out of control. She lost her mind and the woman who raised me seemed largely absent. I had to hear her say she hated me and to know me was to hate me on a nearly daily basis. Or be called a "faggot" semi regularly. Now on a clinical level, I know this is not really my mother saying this. This is whatever her demons had done to her mind. When I was at the point I was ready to leave (my sisters couldn't or wouldn't care for her) she would become Mama again. She was genuinely contrite for how she treated me and was grateful for what I would do for her. But it never lasted and the mental illness would regain control. It took finding religion for me to make peace with it all. I'm sorry I did not mean to overshare. It just kinda flowed out. I'm sorry about your father. Just try to be there for him. If a dark joke comes to you, enjoy it and laugh. You are trying to get moment to moment.

  22. Here's the thing about the Canto Bight sequence: You can certainly argue that it's not the most interesting use of anyone's time or all that relevant to the plot of the movie in end, but it's also HIGHLY relevant to Finn's story thematically. Canto Bight is a gray area in the galaxy where they get fat and rich off playing both sides of the conflict. The one significant character we meet there is a spin on the Rogue with a Heart of Gold who ends up not having a heart, who sells his services to both the Resistance and the First Order in his short time on screen. Well, Finn is a gray area of a character. Yes, he ends up on the side of the angels at the end of TFA, but he gets there almost by happenstance and his own self-interest, not because of any calling to the greater good. Running away to save himself is what this dude does. Remember, he checked out on the Resistance at Takodana in TFA. He only returned to the fray (and ultimately got swept up into the attack on Starkiller Base and became a "hero") because Rey, his friend and maybe more, was in trouble. And in the beginning of TLJ, we see Finn, again, ready to tuck and run on the Resistance, ostensibly to save Rey (again) but just as much to save himself. If not for his feelings for Rey, he wouldn't be anywhere near a star war. Later, we see how easily he's dazzled by the glamour of Canto Bight -- gray area recognize gray area. Every good story confronts its heroes with their own weaknesses, and that's what Canto Bight does for Finn. In this light, DJ becomes a much more relevant character, because you realize he's a mirror version of Finn taken to the extreme, a character motivated entirely by self-interest without any of his redeeming or likeable qualities. DJ turning on Finn and Rose is a huge moment for Finn, because it shows just how ugly operating in the gray area really is. He feels betrayed in the same way Rose felt betrayed when she caught him trying to board the escape pod. It's the slap in the face, the wake-up call, that it's time for Finn to be all in or all out. When Finn declares to Phasma that he's "REBEL scum" it's not just a cute nostalgia line, it's Finn making a choice -- he's declaring himself all in for the Resistance cause, not just himself anymore. And then we see his willingness to follow through on that claim with his attempted suicide run on Crait.

  23. In defense of Sabremike, here is a partial list of things I've said that I couldn't possibly love more on this board: 1) Brodus Clay dancing like a dinosaur 2) This Batista outfit that looks like he's showing up to audition for "Lorenzo Lamas Body Double" but no one told him it's a joke audition 3) Dolph Ziggler as a heel 4) This Batista outfit based on Roddy Macdowell's 1973 post-Oscar's orgy suit 5) Cody Rhodes, supervillain 6) This Batista outfit that he wore at the 2014 "If Pablo Picasso fucked Simon Cowell and made you watch" festival Note: he is leaving is pinky out so you can see the boss-ass skull ring he got in the teen section at Claire's 7) Eve Torres So anyone saying they love anything on a message board is not evidence of anything rational happening inside that person.

  27. My favorite thing about the Mary Sue criticism—aside from the fact that it serves as a warning sign for what I’m about to read—is that the term still carries its origins in self-insert fanfic. So we are to assume, I suppose, that Rian sees an idealized version of himself or an opportunity for wish fulfillment in Rey, and perhaps harbors some secret longing for psychosexually charged finger brushes with Kylo Ren. And I mean... same dude, same. It’s just a useless term at this point; and even if it had utility, it wouldn’t apply to Rey. She’s the lead protagonist of a tentpole space opera. Of course she’s supernaturally capable, but not in a way that breaks the lore. (As everyone else mentioned.)

  28. Not to mention that Luke says that he's never felt the force as strong in anyone as Rey, and that includes Ben. Is it that inconceivable to think over a long enough timeline you're going to get incredibly powerful force users who have an easier time displaying those powers just because there's so much of it? Plus, it's tiring to see folks point out how ridiculous it would be for Rey to best Kylo. Kylo was shot and bleeding out. His skills and abilities on an even playing field are going to be better than Rey's, but Kylo is still raw. And again, dude was hurt bad.

  32. Finally saw this last night. Man was this awful. I had no idea the RT audience numbers were at prequel levels but it makes sense since this was as bad as any of the prequels. It amazes me people ragged on TFA over Rey being a Mary Sue when she's an even bigger one in this movie. She's a better Jedi than Luke, a better pilot than Han, a spunkier leader than Leia, she can master the Force in a week and kicks Kylo's ass every time they fight... There is nothing to her except Disney marketing another character along side Merida, Anna, Repunzel, etc. The Finn stuff was terrible. They literally took a joke Kevin Smith made in Clerks about contractors building the Death Star and made that an entire subplot. You know what I never ever not once said to myself? "These Star War movies are great and all but I'm really bothered they never explored where the Empire buys their TIE Fighters." The Luke stuff was great and I'm happy Hamill decided to bring his fastball to his last trip to the mound. I'm sorta glad the original three have bowed out now (I mean, I wish Carrie Fisher hadn't passed but I'm glad they plan to write Leia out) because this isn't my Star Wars anymore so I'd rather they go in their own direction without further mucking up the original. I totally understand now what Lucas was saying about this no longer being his story when asked about TFA.

  35. I'm dead serious, Rusev can ride this train to world champ and Aiden will be the best heel on the roster when he turns on Rusev. Between that and Fashion Police, they need to let the guys book their own angles from now on. Because, gee whiz, wrestlers get over by being themselves on camera. Like New Day literally just do that goofiest shit and it works because you can completely believe Xavier wants to dress like a muppet on live TV and scream when they try and flapjack him.

  38. He did an interview on the Meltzer radio show and a fan asked him about burying Flair on his blog and Zenk sounded shocked he would ever bury Flair. So I don't really think he was ever writing on the website. Sad to hear of his passing, he was always a main stay in my WCW viewing as a kid. With Lex, Sting and Pillman. Also just being in the opening match of Wrestlemania 3. I must have watched that show fifty times. As a team him and Martel were something special. They had a chemistry that even someone as talented as Tito Santana could not replicate.

  41. I'm going to grab quotes as I go but this is where I am, generally. Boy did it ever need one more edit but I liked a lot of what I saw. Hey! Me and @lostinube are totally on the same page here. That's the message which I thought was most muddled. Poe has to learn not to be a reckless hero while Finn has to learn to be a brave hero and Rose has to learn not to lead with hate but with love but Luke has to reconnect with the force and face his mistakes and Leia HAS hope but then she realizes she has to BE hope but not until after her hope in Luke pays off but her hope in everyone else fails. Messages are all over the place and oft contradictory. (That said, the biggest problem is probably that Finn/Rose go on a BIG ADVENTURE somewhere else really just to make things far, far worse). There's this, certainly. It was exhausting in that regard, even with the humor (which hit wonderfully and, I think, is what Rian really brought to the table). Every one of those shuttles that got blown up hurt, just like the ENTIRE CENTER OF THE NEW REPUBLIC getting blown up in the last one hurt. They're basically down to a team the size of the Rogue One crew at the end. I think there needs to be a time jump between this and the next one. More from @lostinube here. My head canon absolutely had them being the Knights of Ren. Also, am I the only one who was a little bit crushed right from the get go with the death of perky A-Wing pilot? ---- Ok, Luke. So I was very, very frustrated in TFA (and you can go find my posts on it) by the fact the good guys from the original trilogy so thoroughly lost the peace. I think a lot of that is that I'm a 1981 kid instead of a 1977 (or 1974 or maybe even 1991) kid. I skewed a bit younger. I was 2 when Jedi came out and I caught all of these on video as a pretty young kid but while they were still very big and a cultural force. That means I lean towards Luke and not Han, you know? I think that primed me for this though. When Luke gives his side of what happened that night with Ben, I was actually sort of ready for Luke's dark side to somehow be projected as Snoke or for him to end the movie as the Big Bad. I was resigned to that. When Ben gave his side, I realized they were going another direction with it. At the end of the day, Star Wars was Space Opera, but it's 2017 and the characters were always made by their flaws and the strengths. You couldn't have one without the other and the Luke in this movie is very much the Luke that ran off to save his friends instead of completing his training in Empire or the one who clung to hope that he could save his dad when there were more responsible decisions to be made. They sensed fear in him. He was impatient. He may have gotten more competent but at the end of the day, he was always Luke, for good and ill, and this was that Luke. I actually think Hamill overplayed him to a degree. Luke was as they wrote him. But Mark Hamill has grown into someone way cooler than Luke could ever be. One big difference between now and a few years ago is that I've come to grips with the fact that the fictional heroes I grew up with (broom in hand, sure) lost the peace. It reminds me of the difference between the book and the movie versions of Princess Bride. I'm glad I had the movie version of Princess Bride when I was younger, but I can handle the book's ending now. Hell, I live it every day. We all do. Movie was a bit of a mess, needed another edit, and got a bit too cute at times, but I enjoyed it. I bet there's a whole generation of 10 year olds out there who enjoyed it even more. Good.
