Dynamite - 9/7/2022

Dolfan in NYC

Recommended Posts

Someone else posted this on Twitter, but yeah, Tony Khan really owes Jon Moxley a spot in his will after tonight.

It was as good a show as you can expect in light of all the chaos. Considering the whole brawl appears to be in legal territory for now, we probably won't be hearing from or about any of those guys involved for a long while.

AEW really needed people like Moxley, MJF, etc to show up tonight and they did.

I think having Swerve interrupt The Acclaimed's promo was a stroke of genius. I think this will be the perfect segway to putting the belts on The Acclaimed. Swerve costs himself and Keith Lee the belts and turns heel on Lee and they feud.

After seeing him trying to recruit 10, I feel like all of Andrade's AEW feuds are started because he doesn't understand that no means no. He tried to get the Lucha Bros to leave Pac for him and failed, tried to get Darby to leave Sting for him and failed, now he's doing the same thing with Dark Order members.

I know FTR getting the AEW tag team titles is what almost everyone wants but I wouldn't mind Andrade and Rush taking them from The Acclaimed after they have their run.

He needs to keep going down the roster till he gets someone who will say “yes, I’ll join” like Peter Avalon or someone.

Except Andrade doesn’t listen and is like “you don’t wanna join me? Then I’ll see you in the ring”

”no, I said I do want to join your team”

”I’ll see you on Rampage, and I’ll kick your ass”

Give Westside Gunn all the money to make "DR Birds" Garcias theme song!

I'm all in for Tony buying that for Garcia to use.

With Tony paying for music for some of the wrestlers, I feel like Kingston needs something like Shook Ones Part 2 as his theme song

Goddang what a show, I kind of missed out on all the backstage dramas, but luckily for them there are still a ton of amazing wrestlers to carry the company.

Only negative that I have is that the Best Friends don’t seem to catch a break. Maybe if Chucky T shows a little bit more personality (which he definitely has) they could carry the faction to the next level. I’m kind of glad they ditched Wheeler and Statlander, they are a solid trios team that always gets a reaction from the crowd (and AEW og’s).

THIS IS DADDY ASS'S HOUSE! One of the most over stars in 2022, Billy Gunn. Love it.

I thought for sure that was the Best Friends' moment as well, sad it was not to be.

Moxley was killer in the promo. In hindsight I wish he could've just retained and continued his epic run.

Agreed that Toni needs another finish. That DDT isn't working too well, even Mickie James often struggled with it. Even though she won the interim with it, the commentary was completely confused and thought it was a northern lights counter.

Bryan/Hangman was awesome, really dug the finishing stretch. Yuta/Garcia also awesome, great pop.

Really thought I was being worked, but I will fall on my sword with this one.  I was just really looking forward to the OG Elite vs CM Punk, Ace Steel, Danny Dominion, and Kevin Quinn

It is a work. Time will tell.

Ok. Watched it live, and rather then reacting then (because it would have been gushing fanboy-level shit, I was that pumped up), fell asleep for a few hours. Now, However is the time to REACT.

Highly professional way to open the show. No attempts to be too cute, refer to things in an oblique way, and the fact that they didn't even say any of the suspended folks names (due to the ongoing investigation) or show their faces makes me think it's a shoot. (If it is, the fact that Punk is likely out long term (I've heard a year) due to his injuries means they likely will not turn it into a worked shoot later.

MJF is such an ass. The question was if he could even keep a straight face for five minutes. Shameless face pandering to let the crowd kinda get it out of their system, and then going back to the Maximum Cheap Heat stuff.

Mox wasn't having ANY of this crap. I wonder if Tony let him leave early as a thank you for coming in on his day off. Honestly, if Moxley was a bit (ok, at least five-ten years) older, I'd buy another Minoru Suzuki tour and let the two of them run riot (not Ruby) through the backstage, beating up anyone who doesn't take pro wrestling and the RING seriously. (Someone in the middle of a silly angle? Suzuki-Moxley show up and beat the shit out of them, and just walk away.). But seriously, this was one of those things where the emotion behind it made the promo organic and thus, awesome.

The trios match was well.. insane. Danhausen Falcon Punching Alex's jimmies was awesome. Danhausen also immediately getting the RECEIPT from PAC was DOUBLE awesome. Triple Canadian Destroyer was Triple (of course) Awesome. While I think that Orange/Friends deserve a trios title run, they're an act that doesn't NEED the belt right now, while Death Triangle have been stuck in neutral collectively (other than PAC's title) and needed the belts more.

One complaint. Way too much taunt spamming at the beginning, but at least they got rid of it as the match went on. They should have gone straight to the finish after the Destroyers, but that was a minor quibble (it conditions folks to only expect a pinfall after a finisher)

I feel sad that this looks like the end of Dark Order, with Andrade headhunting Vance.

Toni Storm-Penelope Ford was to me, a meh to meh+ match (but that's a lot because there was so much insanity in the other matches). No challenge in the result really

The Acclaimed. Oh god, this could get spicy.. Swerve interrupts so we'll never know what Caster was going to say (which is another reason I think the brawl is real. Caster would be EXPECTED to meta-comment on the whole thing, so, don't even give him a chance to speak.) I'm probably going to catch some heat for this, but heel Swerve's facial expressions remind me of a famous rapper. Sadly, it's Flava Flav. The thought of the pop in two weeks when the Acclaimed (Hopefully) win the belts in NEW YAWK CITY! warms my pro-wrestling soul.

If you told anyone from the Ruthless Agresion era that the top catchphrase in 2022 is "Now Scissor Me, Daddy Ass!" they'd wonder where the hell things went wrong.

Wardlow is so stuck in neutral, some of this because well, they won't give him anyone real to squash so it's just a one-hit wonder hitting that one-note over and over again. They need to figure out.. something with him. fish or cut bait. Then again with the other titles hot potatoing lately, maybe it's good that Jade and Wardlow hold down the secondary singles belts with an infinite lock.

Danielson-Page 3 wasn't on the levels of the first two, but that just means it was **** awesome instead of ***** awwwwwwwwesome (and truth be told, Jericho half-spoiling the result in his promo took away some of the shine from the match).

Sad that Wheeler Yuta is no longer the Pure Champion but it's great to see that there was no shenanigans, and they give the fans what they want. I half-question why this was the main event behind Danielson-Page, but I get that they wanted to finish with the hometown pop)

They threaded the needle very adroitly. It looks like we won't see or hear from any of the fight parties for several months+, which while sad, is possibly the best for the roster, where they get a chance to shine. The brass ring is available boys, now grab it.

Bryan Danielson gets his win back vs. Adam Hangman Page after losing to him on AEW Dynamite, 6th January 2022.

Bryan Danielson gets his win back vs. Chris Jericho next week after losing to him at AEW All Out 2022.

Bryan Danielson gets his win back vs. Jon Moxley at AEW Grand Slam Dynamite 2022. Danielson lost to Mox at AEW Revolution 2022.

Bryan Danielson is the new AEW World Champion. Better late than never as Tony Khan fixes his fuck up.

How things would be different if Jon Moxley kept the AEW World Championship after the squash unification match in Cleveland or at AEW All Out. Not surprised CM Punk injured himself again in the latter match with how he was favouring his arm. CM Punk getting another injury and probably knowing severity of just thought "fuck it" which led to all THAT afterwards.

Fragile ego. Fragile mind. Fragile body. What a prophetic promo by Jon Moxley.

I honestly wish MJF would sod off forever with CM Punk. Apparently, his shoot promo three months ago is fine now but CM Punk's shoot press conference isn't (fight notwithstanding). If Tony Khan had more of a backbone and wasn't trying to be everyone's friend, MJF would be sitting at home or if he came back, he would be losing every match he did on TV. MJF would be nowhere near the AEW World title and it would be Hangman Page in MJF's spot or one of the other wrestlers from the Casino Ladder match setting up the tournament last night.

I want a 3 month Dragon/MJF feud for the title.

MJF has broken free of the 4 pillars stuff and is clearly in that top tier of the card now. We talk about how young Garcia is, but it’s also wild how MJF has complete control of the crowd by age 26.  He’s money and Tony knows it. One of the best things going in wrestling and absolutely going to speak that bidding war into existence.

Umm...I think the difference is that they gave MJF a microphone to go out on the show and say what he said.  Punk, who has spent his entire career adding a bunch of "shoot" backstage shit into his promos, decided to act like a bitch about someone doing the exact same thing to him.  Honestly, every complaint he has is a complaint that multiple people could have about him.  Him accusing anyone else of behaving like a child while having a temper tantrum is absurd.  He is the exact person he's complaining about.  I believe that MJF was legitimately upset about his place in the company, his pay, and probably multiple other things, and they trusted him enough to let him go onto live television to speak about it.  He aired out his grievances without throwing anyone else under the bus.  That is not nearly the same as what Punk did.  Punk got personal with a bunch of people in a public forum that lead to a brawl.  The 26 year old was able to say everything he wanted to say in a way that could reflect poorly on himself, but no one else.  The 43 year old started a fight with 3 of the people who founded the damn company.

Good show and good layout.  Get the bullshit out of the way right away and then fly right into the good stuff.  AEW is going to be okay, guys!

How is MJF so good at playing a heel pretending to be a babyface, but then so bad at being just a heel?  It's amazing how everything pre-Moxley was so good, and everything after was so bad.

Mox was on fucking fire.  Just rallying the fans and troops after all this absolute bullshit.  Give him the belt for 5 years, fuck it.  "Just be a little better than you were yesterday, even if you're the only one who notices."  That shit hit me in the feels, as the kids say.

I was hoping they'd give the belts to the Best Friends to keep the feelgood stuff going but Death Triangle is fine.  WIld-ass trios match, as always.  They should really lean into it and just have Rick Knox ref all these matches, sitting in a lawn chair at ringside with a tropical umbrella drink and only come in to count the pin.

No JR tonight!  I swear he quit over TK not settling this the way Watts would have: KUMITE KUMITE KUMITE KUMITE

Did Jericho mention facing Danielson in his promo?  Not "I hope he wins so we can fight again," but actually like it was going to happen and he fucked up and gave away the booking?  Note: I was drinking at this point.

Holy fuck, let Danielson and Hangman wrestle at least once a month.  These guys make magic every single time.  Hangman is pretty good for a dumb fuck who doesn't listen to his elders.

40 guys at ringside in bright red outfits looking like some Handmaid's Tale or Us shit.  Beeee caaarefuuuuuul.

HEEL SWERVE is so great.

WARDLOW IS TIRED OF THIS BULLSHIT.  Out of control Wardlow is going to be great if they commit to it.

Excalibur goes over the Pure Rules and then Garcia and Yuta forget to shake hands before the match.  LOOOOL

TK needs a proxy to make these announcements.  He's so socially awkward and his crazy eyes weird me the fuck out.

Acclaimed are winning the belts in NY and it's going to be awesome!

Ford and Storm were great!

Garcia unifies the ROH Pure and PWG World titles!!!  ? Incredible match, but not as good as Hangmin/Dragon.  But what could be?

Ethan Page as Wish.com The Rock (which is who he always wanted to be) is lame.  Page's gimmick is "has charisma" but he was outshined by LEE MORIARTY of all people there.

It's already been said, but this is such a credit to their roster.  They REALLY don't need CM Punk, for so many reasons.

I'd say Jon Moxley is the biggest AEW signing ever, one of two to join AEW with Chris Jericho as it was starting up and carrying the company in 2020 as AEW World Champion during the global pandemic. Mox is having a career year this year after coming out of rehab, becoming Interim AEW World Champion then Undisputed AEW World Champion. Wrestler of the Year.

I liked the ROH PPV Garcia vs Yuta match a little more, but I thought things opened up when they were in the corner and messing with the turnbuckles during the break. The crowd was lovely for it and the struggle was good. It was just a bit tricky due to the shifting face/heel dynamics and I'm not sure it was put together (or really was able to be put together) in a way that maximized the crowd. Even things like the Germans I didn't mind because the selling was escalated and they weren't killshots execution-wise so much as mat returns/takeovers. It just needed some clearer beats that the crowd would be able to latch on to, maybe? I remember the ROH PPV match being very tight and very crisp and this was a little more nebulous. Garcia sacrificing a rope break early to get the hip toss over the top was probably my favorite moment though.

EDIT: because the first part of my post got eaten somehow.

They basically went OHMSS last night, only they didn't even need to address the elephant in the room because everything was so killer. Seriously, did ANYONE miss Punk, Omega or the Bucks after Mox's State of AEW promo and the entire roster stepped up to the plate like Aaron Judge taking BP?

God bless that crowd, they were 100% vested in babyface MJF and he dropped the other shoe like a GD nuclear bomb. "JOSH ALLEN SUCKS!"

In case anyone was wondering about Garcia's gear:

Spoiler
