Jesus. Tony Khan looks so fucking uncomfortable. This feels like such a moving target though. How could any of the EVPs been responsible or what were they responsible for? I don't quite get it. Or is Punk conflating Hangman as being an EVP?

If WWE did this show there would be 562 comments that they hate their fans.

How the hell Dark Order doesn’t win as tribute to Brodie Lee in the biggest upset in AEW history is beyond me. That crowd DIED when the Elite won.

Acclaimed should have gotten the audible title win.

Eddie Kingston is a fucking beast and we need Summer of Kingston in 2023.

Punk title win and MJF return expected.

Rest of the show was largely forgettable and just there. Chicago is burned out on AEW

The Acclaimed vs. Swerve In Their Glory was off-the-charts great. All-time banger of a match. Lee and Swerve are fantastic as heels. Swerve has overconfident swagger. Lee to me speaks and talks like a smug Nick Bockwinkle type and he kind of wrestled like a hybrid of Vader and Bock? Like a really intelligent bully? Bowens was a fantastic Ricky Morton. Max brought the fire. So many incredible near falls. My favorite AEW match so far has probably been Yuta/Moxley but this was up there for me. Run that back as a main event on Dynamite or Rampage and let The Acclaimed get the big win finally.

I liked a lot of the women's match. Everyone got their different shine. I liked the ending with Britt pulling out Jamie Hayter and setting up a few new stories they can go with. Toni Storm is a good wrestler that I do not care about one bit, but she'll have good matches.

FTR/Wardlaw versus Jay Lethal and MCMG was a solid match that should not have been on the PPV.  The House of Black vs. Sting/Darby/Miro match was also a fun match that should have been saved for free TV. They deserved their own moments as opposed to being placed on an already overwrought PPV. And, also, it's really silly to have two more trios matches on a show where you are crowning a trios champion.

I liked the goofy ending of the ladder match. You need some wrestling theatrical stupidity for the soap opera. But man the whole point of doing a whole "WHO IS THAT MASKED MAN???" gimmick is to build to a reveal. It was obviously going to be Max. (I in the chat hypothesized it could be Claudio like the Chikara story and then also sorta joked it should be Colt Cabana.) But doing this whole charade with some misdirection and etc. could have had a payoff in a week or two.

The Trios Finals was good. It was clear who was going to win but the "how" was fun enough. The one thing in the match that irritated me is that they were building to the big Kenny/Hangman throwdown, only for the ref to slow to enter the moment and make them tag in as legal men. Like... NOW is when you care about that in a match?

I kind of hated the main event. Punk and Ace Steel's walk to the ring where Punk did his everyman Chicago bit and how he was fighting for firefighters or whatever -- that works really well if you're going against a heel in the Flair archetype. But, like, Mox is every bit of the working man's hero and then some. Mox carried a lot of the match it felt like.  Really wild and telling that the PPV ended with MFJ chants in Chicago.

Jericho/Bryan was a really good match with a good ending but another thing that could have been left for a TV show.

It seems like he's confused about Hangman being an EVP (unless he is now?) and is alleging that Hangman or one of the other EVPs leaked all of this stuff to the dirtsheets a week or two ago.

EDIT: Swerve actually goes off a little bit on the dirt sheet writers as well, about 5 or so minutes into their part of the scrum.

What an absolute bitch.

I'm sure he sells plenty of merch but the honeymoon period is well and truly over with this guy in my eyes. I was ecstatic to have him back but he's no better than Hogan and Hunter when it comes to backstage politics and without someone to reign him in all his worst traits are showing.

Maybe he's mad at Hangman about the promo and mad an EVP for spreading info that he got Colt fired

I think the thought process is Hangman brought up Cabana stuff in that promo. Hangman is buds with Kenny & The Bucks. Kenny & The Bucks have Hangman's back, so essentially he's still kinda an EVP by association even without the title. But god damn. That was some really cutting delivery there. I'm gonna hope this is all part of a grand HBK / Bret worked shoot behind the scenes thing. But that's getting hard and harder to believe.

Bringing up the Cabana sharing a bank account with his mom thing is going too far. In context it makes him sound like a man baby mooching off his mom, but it's entirely possible she has health issues and it's done that way so he can help her out? Just speculating there. But regardless even if Punk's in the right (and I'm not taking sides because I don't know the details obviously), it's hard to side with a guy that's being that much of a dick about it.

This media scrum is so fucking uncomfortable to listen to. Calling out EVPs and calling Hangman and empty headed dumbfuck. I feel like I'm listening to my parents fight.

My first thought was that Tony looked like a teenage kid who came home stoned in the middle of the night only to walk in on the  final argument in his parents’ marriage.

OMFG, watching this Punk press conference now and him going over the intricacies of a lawsuit and blaming EVPs and "journalists" -- this is so fucking stupid and amateur hour. He keeps on going on and on about it. What a dope. He's completely humiliating Tony at the same time and undermining his authority. It's great.

This was one of my least favourite AEW shows tbh. Finish to Swerve in our Glory vs. The Acclaimed should have changed there and then. Chris Jericho going over Bryan Danielson clean was fucking stupid. Jericho was fighting another battle with his tights. House of Black lose again. I'd say only PPV level bouts were Swerve in our Glory/The Acclaimed and The Elite vs. Adam Page/John Silver/Alex Reynolds.

First of all, fuck CM Punk. No one has ever been a bigger martyr in their own mind than that dude. Nothing is his fault, everyone is out to get him, and no one but him knows what's best for business. No one has ever been in bigger need of a public ass kicking than that dude. Hangman Page is by all accounts a great guy, and Punk can't lace Page's boots athletically at this point. I don't see how Tony Khan can look anyone in the eye backstage after the things Punk said about the EVPs and Page.

Now, on to the show;

-The Casino Ladder Match was fun, but a lot of the spots were nonsensical. I really, really wanted Andrade to win this, but the thing with the masked guys was at least fun. W Morrissey is such a welcome addition to this roster.

-I'm going to not read too much into this trios finals finish. There is part of me that wants to roll my eyes at this self referential bullshit that calls back to shit that happened years ago, but the match itself was amazing. Great false finishes. I really thought Page continuing his winning ways over the Elite would've been an interesting story, but the match was good and I'm going to choose to believe that this wasn't Kenny and the Jacksons flexing political muscle to be the first trios champs.

-Jade Cargill is a goddamn star. STAR. Sign her to a 38 year, 152 million dollar extension. Whatever you have to do. Athena is a gamer. She's really great. I think having a WWE transplant beating Jade Cargill would've been bad optics for the company when there's allegedly so much drama backstage. At this point I think you gotta merge the TBS and World women's title and intro women's tag titles.

-FTWar vs. MCMG and Jay Lethal was dope as hell. I personally prefer Time Splitters to MCMG, but damn they're fun to watch. This was a showcase for Wardlow. He murdered people. Samoa Joe and Finlay were the biggest stars in this match. Are Chris Sabin and Angelico related?

-Starks vs. Hobbs was effective for what it needed to be. Starks can eat a loss here and looked like a gamer even when at a severe disadvantage. I'm not sure if I think Hobbs is getting a big push or if this was just a storytelling device. Everything Ricky Starks does is cool to me. Everything.

-Holy shit. Holy fucking shit. SioG vs. The Acclaimed ruled so, so hard. I agree with the poster who said that it would've been impossible to anticipate how over the Acclaimed were tonight. The "oh, scissor me daddy" chants were choice. I'm fine with SioG retaining here. If you really feel the need, you can do the title change at Grand Slam. What a phenomenal piece of business.

-This four way was really good. The only outcome I would've disliked was Baker winning, so this was cool. This was Toni Storm's night, and I'm happy for her. What a fun match. Shida coming back out popped me.

-Jungle Boy/Christian served the story. Lots of folks are saying that Christian is hurt and needs time off. Now Jungle Boy can overcome Luchasaurus on his way to getting his hands on Christian again. Jungle Jack took that chokeslam like a grown ass man.

-Jericho/Danielson was really good until that nonsensical ass finish. I'm not sure what purpose it serves for Jericho to go over.

-Hous of Black really, really needed this win. I thought Malakai pinning Sting was the way to go here. The match itself was really good, and I'd love to see Darby and Bud Mathews get 15 minutes on a Dynamite. Folks were saying Malakai was bowing to the live crowd after the match. I hope he's jsut taking time off and not headed out of AEW. It would be cool to see them get him going again.

-I don't have a lot to say about the main event. It's hard to defend Tony Khan when his markdom shines through with things like bullheadedly putting the title on Punk when he's 45, injury prone, and a locker room cancer. I'm just not a fan. The postmatch stuff with MJF was really cool. I'm looking forward to seeing Friedman pin Punk clean for the title.

So stepping back from this to look ahead... the one thing that seems to turn the AEW crowd on someone is a promo they don't like/agree with (gestures towards Cody and Sammy). While this isn't televised... the crowd turning Punk heel in that sort of manner is 100% in play. The issue is that if MJF is the feud while you can sort of turn MJF face... if that group is really his moving forward that faction just ain't gonna be faces. Ethan Page, the Ass Boys and the former big Cass do not feel like they are gonna get the crowd rallying behind them any time soon.

Should be interesting I guess?

You could feel the secondhand embarrassment during Tony's "I should have just said 'no comment' when you asked that" bit.

That's the impression I got here. If someone (presumably Page) spread inaccurate rumors about Punk and Colt's dirty laundry to the sheetz and asserted that Punk got Colt fired then Punk has a right to be pissed and ream the journalists for spreading misinformation in the process. The opening question got cut off but it was a pretty unprofessional thing to ask and while Punk's response was a bit scathing, I don't blame him getting worked up if someone else in the locker room is talking about other peoples' issues that they don't know all the facts of. Either way I hope this puts to rest all the talk about what the status of Punk and Colt's relationship or lack thereof is.

I actually meant to also mention in response to people upset House of Black lost: Darby Allin desperately needs some big wins right now after such a rocky year. Putting him over Malakai will probably lead to a really good singles program (and hopefully, from there, to Darby and Yuta feuding over the All Atlantic belt once they get it off PAC).

The jump cut to Death Triangle, the Best Friends, and Danhausen all standing around was so unintentionally funny. Like yes these seven ridiculous men are about to have a serious discussion. "Oh that'll be real productive. Which one do you want to talk to first, the one wearing the bumblebee suit or the one with the bone in his hair?".

JR said some crazy stuff as well. I forget his exact phrasing but he said something to the effect that it was unusual for the challenger, rather than the champion, to have the hometown advantage, which I don't think can really be a thing. He also said "ironically, because he's using the flat of his foot, Moxley's kicks to the head aren't illegal". Is this really ironic??
