Hear me out, AEW Dark Discovery championship, exclusively for Dark/Elevation. You get 10 (or whatever amt) successful defenses, you can opt in for a title shot of any belt you want but you've got to relinquish.

That's a seriously cool idea, man. All the stakes of Money In The Bank but without being a slave to the whole surprise cash-in trope. I would say if it's going to be exclusive to the Darks, then it should definitely be the TNT, AA, and/or FTW titles in play and not the World title. The TNT title has had the concept of the "open challenge" as part of it's identity a couple of times now, so it doesn't necessarily "cheapen" it in the way that it would the World title (especially with rankings being emphasized so often).

Thinking out loud myself, I think it would be cool if Hook retired the FTW belt and declared himself first Champion of whatever hypothetical title we're coming up with here. Team Taz is done, why not do the whole "I love you Dad but want to forge my own path" thing. Given the concept you've come up with, I don't hate "Elevation Championship" and there's the obvious synergy with the Monday show for bonus points.

On the other hand, as long as the ROH titles, and the AAA and IWGP tags are around, the last thing we need is more belts. Especially in the middle of the trios title tourney. I guess this one is fine since it's only on YouTube and not TV, but then they ought to keep the ROH belts off of there.

Actually, maybe this is an idea for the Pure title?

Edit: Maybe not though, because there should be a women's one too for the TBS

If a worker is part of an established tag team then I could see them going for the tag titles too here but this would only be redeemed on AEW titles so no ROH. And valid point about the World title.

In boxing, if you win the British championship (at any weight class) and defend it three times, you get to keep the physical belt and they make another. Which was a tradition for decades, long before the custom made replica belt business took off.

Didn't Smokey Mountain or some other southern fed have a title where if you defended it X number of times you won some sort of prize?

Smoky Mountain had the Beat the Champion Television Championship.  Once you won the belt, you defended it against opponents “picked at random”.  If you made four successful title defenses, the title was vacated and the now-former champion got a $5,000 bonus.

Seriously though if they scrapped the All Atlantic title how would we feel about a Deathmatch title instead?

I'm not down with it for the same reason I always thought it would be a bad idea in ECW: too many of the main event-level/upper card matches are death match/hc type matches, so you run the risk of 1) further desensitizing the audience to tons of crazy shit, or 2) dooming the division to being more comedy oriented. It's a cool idea, I just don't think it works when you have Hangman and Adam Cole doing a really good one for the top belt on a random Friday night.

I just thought of this, but here's a fun idea: since DDT is a partner, why not have an Iron Man Heavymetalweight title defense once or twice a year? Even if it were lots of comedy (which, hey, it should be) they could always do it on a Buy In

All fair points, although I was thinking having it's own title would help keep the hardcore stuff out of the main event matches, maybe to the extent that they don't do Texas Death anymore and Blood and Guts is reserved as the only crazy garbage night outside of the deathmatch title stuff. In other words, since they're so intent on keeping blood and weapons as a central part of the product, they may as well dial it way back as per your point about desensitization, and instead just give it its own belt so that the people who are turned off by the barbed wire and glass and whatnot know they can just turn the channel or whatever during those matches.

That being said, I think that was sort of WWF's idea with the hardcore title and that horribly backfired as soon as Holly won it and it essentially became a second jobber title along with the European title and the matches where it was defended were often less wild or violent than other stuff on any given card.

Someone pointed out in regards to the Jacksons and the Hardys Both Matts have darker hair than their brothers

NWA had this with their TV title.  7 defenses (and a draw counted as a defense) you got a world title shot.  Ricky Starks was only person to cash it in.

I never understood secondary titles that could be cashed in for world title shots after x number of defenses.  Unless world title shots are booked as few and far between, why is Wrestler A fighting off challengers for 5-10 defenses while some other dude walks in and gets a shot for, what, a win or two, whatever the booker decides?  Now if the secondary title were the only way to get a world title shot, yes, that would work.

I still contend this is the only way to ever explain why somebody would ever even want to hold a/the 24/7 championship and thus paint an all-hours target on your back wherein you're getting jumped at the grocery store, or during your wedding, etc:

Most Time (on aggregate) holding the 24/7 championship over X period (a month, a PPV cycle, a year, etc) makes you #30 in the rumble (Joker in a casino battle royale), or a "free" World Championship match ("free" meaning your own 24/7 championship is exempt from challenges the day of your world title bout, and/or it's the one time the MITB holder cannot cash in, etc)

For every day you hold it, you earn $1000?

money's the other way to do it.  Some way of you making money on par to a big time/world championship contender, such that it makes sense you would voluntarily take yourself out of the normal line of World Title Contending succession (especially if you're a "midcard for life" type who's not likely to get World Champ Money any other way)

maybe the TV champion should've gotten guaranteed first crack at all commercials/endorsement deals or something ?

so I've started a new thread because I really enjoyed talking about Midcard Belt Theory but don't want to derail the AEW All Out thread further, hope folks will want to continue the discussion there.

Or can't be released for another week, unless you ask for it?

And for the actual All Out commentary: Isn't this one supposed to be their WrestleMania each year? One would think they had to put on the biggest show possible, by any means necessary! There has to be some tricks up their sleeve yet! Kinda like the MCMG replacement etc.

If we ARE going into Punk vs Mox II... let's think about it for a second, especially looking at how Punk vs Page was worked and how Mox has been working all year.

This could be leading to Mox as the out of control aggressive monster, a hungry shark, against a damaged Punk, an asshole, but 100% the crowd's asshole in Chicago with everything to prove, having to fight from underneath and brush up against his own sins and limitations, being broken inside and out, up against a man who overcame his demons only to express to the world that he wished for nothing more than to be a demon himself.... all in front of a molten crowd with high stakes.

That's some pretty gripping stuff right there.

Can't help but imagine if the squash match between CM Punk vs. Jon Moxley for the Undisputed AEW World Championship took place here in Chicago instead. Would make for one of the most unique crowd reactions ever. An actual riot.

Spoiler

We’re definitely getting House of Black vs. Miro/Sting/Darby

I’m also assuming we’ll still get Hangman inserted into Team Dark Order somehow. Kenny/Bucks vs. Hangman/Dark Order seems like the obvious Final, right?
