Ric Flair’s Last Match Post Show Discussion

Recommended Posts

Did anybody but me watch this?

I thought the presentation looked good, their was production glitches but hey this was their first show. I thought the old Saturday night layout was cool and seeing Jim Crockett Promotions run a show again was cool. If this thing makes any money maybe they run more JCP shows. If they can mix old with the new like this more often maybe it will gain some traction. Wishful thinking I suppose.

I enjoyed it the matches were kept short. They were fun. The Lucha 4 Way and Briscoes Vs Von Erichs we’re my favorite matches. Watching Pillman and Brock teaming up with Arn by their side I hope Tony Khan was paying attention, they make a good pair. I’m happy Ellering’s ankle wasn’t too badly hurt and I was really liking Alexander Vs Fatu until that damn Matt Cardona showed up.

Flair looked old but he is old. Crowd was behind him. Jarrett is great at getting heat and Lethal and Andrade are really good wrestlers so the match wasn’t going to be a complete train wreck. For what the match was I enjoyed it. It had some Gaga, Karen yelled “I’ll fucking kill you” at Meghan had me howling. Flair bled and took a superplex I think he’s crazier for taking the superplex.

This was a fun show, it was cool to see the wrestling world get together and celebrate Ric Flairs storied career and hey for all his faults the man is one of the greatest of all time and it was cool to see him and his career celebrated tonight. That’s my thoughts on it.

Also Doug Dillinger was there.

I watched it. Part of me wishes I didn’t, but you can tell everyone involved was doing their best to make Flair look like a million bucks. Jay Lethal is such a goddamn pro. Effortlessly smooth & crisp on his shit. Jarrett is a heat machine. Both Jarrett’s, actually. Double J is in fantastic shape. He looks like he could have one more IC title reign right now. You could tell this was a labor of love for Andrade. Nobody tests your goodwill like family.

I hope Ric got what he wanted from this. It was funny to me that Tony Schiavone called Ric “the greatest wrestler of all time” with Bret Hart standing right there. Just made me chuckle.

I cannot believe Flair tried to take a fucking superplex even after he looked like death and could barely move before taking a bump. After taking a vanilla suplex he could not move and Andrade basically had to maneuver him around like a dummy after that. Incredible scenes. We were ? this close to a Randy the Ram moment irl.

I watched most of the show. Since Flair didn't leave his boots/robe in the ring does mean we get one last helicopter?

In all seriousness I feel like this was a cash grab and that Flair wanted to get out there one last time before he gets cancelled like Vince.

Foley, Hart, and Taker front row? Come on, Hart went off about Flair in his book, as did Foley.

The undercard from what I saw was good. Dozed off and didn't see Ren Narita, the stampede, or women's match.

I enjoyed it. Ric didn't come off the top rope like promised! But for the best that they didn't go through with the attempted superplex. Match was fun enough overall and good for Flair to go out like he wanted. Karen Jarrett's deadly high heel! Lots of blood, he looked out of it by the end. Loved the little bits like Conrad throwing in the brass knux. "The son in laws are helping out their father in law!"

Wolves/MCMG was good, two awesome teams and only their 2nd match together. Middle matches were real short. Thought Pillman Jr. looked a lot better here presentation wise. AAA 4 way was fantastic.

Really liked the overall presentation of things. Loved the Briscoes coming out to Gimme Back My Bullets again, Stranglehold for the Von Erichs, Bully Ray coming out to GNR, and Rachel Ellering's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" ruled. Knockouts 3 way was fun, Ellering was underrated in her too-brief time in Impact. Show timed out nicely just about right at 3 hours.

Full results for any who missed:

Slight correction here, Jarrett set him up top for a Superplex but thankfully when tagged, Lethal just brought him down to the ring and did a standard Suplex after the tag. I'm real thankful Jay was looking out for Flair and made the call to ratchet down the danger.

I'm glad no one got hurt but that was tough to watch. Flair had a few good minutes but once the tank was empty... it was emmmppptttyyy. I feel for him. He's still got the personality & the charisma. He still has the understanding and knowledge. But his body just can't do it anymore. They were literally just dragging his body into position for stuff near the end. And the Figure 4 pinfall at the end was well shot. Flair was out. His shoulders were down too. But thankfully the camera angle was right on Jarrett's shoulders.

Jarrett was a legit heat machine and worked like a Memphis ace. The Karen / Meghan brawl was legit. I laughed out loud when Karen shrieked "I'll Fucking Kill You". The promo after was a bit depressing. Flair even said he couldn't remember most of the match. And Andrade had to direct him to pose and he was about to walk off without even looking at the crowd for one last time. Overall happy he got his moment, happy no one got hurt, but truthfully I felt uneasy watching it.

everything i've read makes this seem sadder than the eventual "Jerry Lawler's Last Match" show that'll be held in a casino in Tunica with Lawler and Jeff Jarrett working Bill Dundee and JC Ice

Lawler was at this show heeling it up with Jarretts in their locker room.

Hart and Foley front row with Taker irked me a bit. Doesn't Flair still have heat with Foley and Hart?

The presentation of the show was great. Flair's shoulders were down for the 3 but the camera never caught it.

After the show you could hear someone tell the workers to come out to surround Flair.   It was also noticable when the ref tried giving Flair the big gold belt and he kept walking. Andrade had to go back and get it and give it to him.  Flair seemed totally out of it. Hopefully this is indeed his last hurrah.

Shit, Lawler would’ve been perfect as the third for Lethal and Jarrett.

you think the WWE had to preemptively tell Jerry not to work in this match ala the time that the WWE kiboshed the Lawler/Hogan match in the 2000s due to conflicts between Viacom and the Hogan Knows Best people

speaking of that long-ago show... probably for the best for everybody seated behind the front row that Paul Wight didn't get a front row seat

He will probably get the Landers Center at least (although the Mid South Coliseum is technically still around but no longer being used). I might have to go to that just on principle cause I am a terrible human being.

Also, I dunno if Jamie is sane enough to do a match nowadays.

Honest question, in 2022, does Lawler still have the cachet to headline a show of similar size in Memphis?

This was pretty scary to watch at times, and I too was insanely relieved they aborted the superplex.

This *might* have been fine five or ten years ago, or if he was in Mike Jackson shape, but holy shit, man. Like NoFlips said, when it was over, it was over.

Truthfully, I watched hopeful we might at least get a promo that rivaled Terry Funk's "Forever!" or the Ultimate Warrior's death promo; an all time-talker doing on the mic what Johnny Cash did with "Hurt." We... did not. But hey, the guy bled, hit a few chops, ate a suplex, the undercard was great (turns out the wrestlers ain't the problem with Impact - big shout out to everyone in the ladies match, especially Rachel Ellering for toughing it out, and of course the legendary MCMGs) and it was nice to see the original Big Gold belt again.

Moral quandaries aside, I've watched worse

I thought it was a good show for the most part. The undercard really delivered which was a huge bonus.

I thought Ric looked in good shape for the most part until his cardio fell to shit and he looked like a bloated corpse laying there. I'm just glad it ended on a good note with him hugging people.
