Hey, John Polito aka the guy who played Gideon the Pawn Broker in The Crow and countless other scummy types in Coen Brothers movies, is the fucking presiding judge over Eric Blunt's trial in Murder In The First.

Talk about casting against type!

For me, the ultimate casting Jon Polito against type was playing Rhonda on episode of The Chris Isaak Show.

Which makes that accent in CADDYSHACK that much more ponderous.

I knew that Frank Darabont penned the awesome screen adoptations for The Mist, The Green Mile, and Shawshank Redemption in addition to all of the kick ass work he's done on The Walking Dead, but I totally forgot that he co-wrote the screenplays for the totally fucking king-sized late 1980's reboot of THE BLOB~! and mother fucking Nightmare On Elm Street 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS~!

Watching an episode of CAR 54, WHERE ARE YOU? on my fav. channel MeTv...

A bunch of crooks buy an old rundown restaurant next door to a bank so they can tunnel into the safe.  The idiot cops feel bad for them and pitch in to help them get the restaurant up and running, so the crooks are trapped there pretending to run a restaurant...yep...hilarious.

One of the gangsters looked familiar and I IMDB'ed that shit and ended up down the internet rabbit hole.  He was played by...Jake Lamotta.  Fuckin' hell...It's like anything associated with Joe E. Ross got pulled into that sleazy burlesque club world.  But just...weird.  So I click on Lamotta and he appeared on CAR 54 five times, playing five different characters with names like "Muscles McGirk" "Bugsy" and "Thug."

In the same episode, the young gangster chick was played by Arlene Golanka who it turns out was the voice of one of my all-time childhood cartoon crushes, Debbie from SPEED BUGGY:

In turn, that google image search led me to know Yes, "Debbie from SPEED BUGGY" foot fetish porn is a thing.  Thanks, Internet..you fucking creep.

Here's one that may only be news to me.

Tonight on MeTv (greatest channel on earth)  Katey Sagal, looking all of a teenager, shows up in an episode of COLUMBO playing a secretary ("Candidate for Crime").  Turns out it's one of a number of roles her father got her when she was just starting out...Boris Sagal was the director of the episode.  I had no idea her father was not only a director but a hugely prolific t.v. director who filmed a ton of early t.v. shows and the minseries RICH MAN POOR MAN...and THE OMEGA MAN with Charlton Heston.

Yeah.  Peg Bundy's dad directed Fucking OMEGA MAN...I had no idea.

Interesting guy.  Born in Ukraine back in USSR days and came to America to study film at Yale.  He also died young in a rather gruesome on-set accident.

I just saw this linked somewhere else.  It is the best website in history:

http://lebeauleblog.com/about-what-the-hell-happened/

It is a series of loooong, super-obsessive essays about actors whose careers soared and then shrank.  It goes through all their obscure early roles in loving detail, then their moment as hot shit, and then starts to figure out where it all went wrong.

Lots of obscure Youtube clips in the "early parts" of each person.  Reading through the Michael Biehn one, and now knowing he was in the t.v. version of LOGAN'S RUN, he was in GREASE!, HILL STREET BLUES, a bunch of obscure t.v. movies including one that was a pilot for a Robert Reed (Mr. Brady) series about runaways and one where he was George C. Scott's son held prisoner in China...fuck yeah.

This is the most beautiful IMDB-OCD time suck ever and a great way to trip along the weird world of bad t.v. and forgotten movies of the 1970s and 80s.  Did you know Cathy Lee Crosby played Wonder Woman before Lynda Carter?  Well now you do, because Michael Biehn was IN THAT SHIT!

The movie she was in with Michael Biehn, was COACH where Kathy Lee plays a GASP>...WOMAN coach! of a boys high school basketball team and apparently basically fucks the crap out of Michael Biehn...THE 70SSS!!!!!

The movie is important, however, for the guy who plays the horrible sexist principal.  KEENAN, MOTHERFUCKING WYNNE!!! If you don't know him you should:

I have actually seen that Cathy Lee Wonder Woman movie (twice actually). The first time was many many decades ago when I saw a "Wonder Woman" movie listed in the TV Guide only to be crushingly disappointed when it wasn't the Lynda Carter version but this dopey Cathy Lee one. Recently, I found a copy on a B-movie site I belong to and man, its just as bad as I remember. It really isn't Wonder Woman at all (unless you count the Denny O'Neill revamp version, which its kinda like) as she has no powers, no jet, no bracelets, and most importantly no bustier with star spangled panties. She's just a female 007 in a patriotic jumpsuit.

Pretty much the only good thing about it was Anitra Ford, who B-movie fans will definitely remember from the Pam Grier classic Big Birdcage.

Anyway, speaking of surprising credits as they relate to superhero movies - I decided to watch all the Phase 1 Marvel flicks before getting bogged down in football season. A couple actors jumped out at me that I didn't notice upon first watch.

First, the dopey dad from Modern Family played Doc Sampson in the Hulk. Wonder if they'll ever bring him on SHIELD as a stunt cast, since he's kind of a "name" and they seem to have free reign to use Hulk characters (Talbot showed up last year, hints Abomination will show up)

Secondly, in Captain America, Margaery Tyrell is Tommy Lee Jone's secretary, the one who puts the moves on Steve and causes Peggy to fly into a jealous rage and shoot him when he first gets his shield. She's almost unrecognizable in a terrible blonde wig but after watching GoT, those cheekbones and lips are a dead giveaway. I suspect she probably tried out for Peggy and the director was like, "Well, we're hiring another actress but I definitely want to work this lady in the movie somehow..."

I thought Seth Green was a hardcore atheist.  Did they not tell him it was a Christian film or is he really hard up for money?

MeTv (greatest of the major networks!) is showing the hippie-exploitation flick PSYCH-OUT starring Jack Nicholson and the hot-as-fuck Susan Strasberg.  She plays a deaf runaway looking for her brother who gets caught up in, like the scene, man.

One of the plainclothes square-ass cops trying to track her down is played by...Garry FUCKING Marshall!!!!

I have to wonder if Paul F. Tompkins knows about this?

Note: This movie is so great.  A guy on an acid trip just tried to cut his hand off with a circular saw leading Susan Strasberg to ask "Why does he take that stuff?"

The answer was: "Now, look, it's like Nietzsche says it's a very simple thing, baby..."

JACK NICHOLSON JUST ASKED DEAN STOCKWELL TO JOIN HIS BAND!!!!  This is him:

10342440_gal.jpg

"It's all just one big plastic hassle, man."

THIS MOVIE IS THE GREATEST!

There was just a scene in a church, and when the hippies left these two squares were like, "I thought the priest was respectable.  How can he spend time with people who look like that!?!???"  And then the camera pans over to a stained-glass window of Jesus with his long hair and scraggly beard....MESSAGE MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!!

Okay Bruce Dern just showed up.  Shit gettin' real real, real fast.

The Cathy Lee Crosby WW movie was an entry in the comic book movie tournament, you know. :)

And it's a body double in Coach. Us kids in the 1980s knew which actresses were not really naked (like Heather Thomas in Zapped) in those pictures.

Maybe not surprising considering she's been pretty much stuck doing awful projects for years, but Sherliyn Fenn in The Brittany Murphy Story made me kinda sad. I'm watching the TV thinking: You were Audrey in Twin Peaks, you're better than this!

I still do a double take whenever I see legendary comic book writer Gerry Conway's name show up on a "Law & Order" episode credits.  I forget he was a staff writer for the 1999-2000 season and then did a stint on "Criminal Intent."

Hilariously, IMDB shows that four of his "Criminal Intent" episodes were adapted for the Russian version, meaning he gets royalties in Ruples.

During a brief period of unemployment (due to a layoff), I spent part of my time catching up on preschool TV with my three-year-old.  She likes Sprout On Demand, and I did a double take when I discovered ...

Michael Cera was the original voice of Brother Bear in the 2000s revival of "The Berenstain Bears" for PBS.

Okay, so I'm watching DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE, thinking to myself that whoever was in charge of the casting did a great job filling the small parts with quality character actors with a lot of personality, and right about then, I notice John Doman (Rawls on THE WIRE, Falcone on GOTHAM, Home Depot voice) as the construction site guy who explains to McClain how the tunnel works.
