I appreciate Paul's posts to prevent me from double posting.

Main was great. I loved the thought put into teasing the curse at various points (like during the commercial break on the sunset flip and later on Sterling leading to the actual transition and Cassidy getting back into the match) or the DDT. There were a couple of points where I wish they had used Sterling, Danhausen, or the ropes instead of a kick out. But yeah this was a Christian level wrestling-IQ match in how it was laid out and built to. Great crowd throughout the night, even this deep into the show too. Nese is really a perfect foil for Cassidy, a guy who takes himself so seriously as a character but is willing to get clowned so thoroughly. What a pro.

Dean’s Saturday thoughts on Kingston-Takeshita mirror mine (also coincidentally on Saturday but not a rewatch). This was a super fun very stiff match that would have all-time classic potential with 30-40 minutes to give more time to build, and then more time between the huge move sections. A nice small touch was Lard Lad barely making the 10 count after the Exploder on the floor. Really do hope they give them a 30-minute main event rematch. Also hope we get Takeshita-Danielson.

I was thinking Faces of Fear for Gates of Agony (yeah, probably a little racist there...) but Road Warriors is a great comparison. Gresham with Tully will be better than Gresham on his own, but ROH is a great place for a guy like that. Lee Moriarty really needs some kind of signature win.

Mercedes-Deeb will be good. Tony Khan’s determination to get Deeb over is how I know he was a DVDVR board member. I do agree with whoever posted that having the token Rampage women’s match be an angle squash is getting old.

I didn’t expect much out of Nese-Cassidy and they ended up really having a great match. Paired well, with Cassidy both selling Nese’s big moves well and having enough charisma to get Nese some heat. And then Nese sold Cassidy’s moves like a million bucks. Those DDT sells made that sequence look huge without looking silly. Cassidy is on a run, but not sure where they can go with him right now.

I understand why Orange uses the punch for a finish but the deep impact DDT is such a gnarly move that people shouldn't be kicking out of it, particularly if they sell it like Nese did.

edit: forgot "deep"

I half wonder if it was meant to be Sterling putting the foot on the rope but he just landed too far away.

OC's used it as a falsie throughout his AEW run, just not in every match thankfully.

Worst AEW Kingston match I've ever seen. I thought it was terrible.

Sometimes I feel like you can overstate your opinion to make a point and while I don't hate quite this much, this wasn't good and a huge disappointment. I think it's safe to say that when Kingston gets to work a Japanese opponent, his pew-roh-ree-sue fandom comes out way too much and it's hideous to watch. I'm fine with the odd delayed selling but none of it was earned, none of it was even really sold that well, and it didn't make sense. It was the wrong idea to fit that much stuff into such a short match. Like others have suggested, with more time to breathe, it would help a lot but I still don't like Kingston's "Japanese" tendencies. Felt even more disappointed by the Ishii match tbh.

Maybe I don't want to see Kingston vs. Akiyama after all. ?

Edit: Kaun and Toa are wonderful.

Eddie Kingston is living his best life.  A Puro stiffness mark wrestling Strong Style matches in the states to a crowd of appreciative fans.  The gigantic guy in the second row biting on all of the false finishes made this match.  Takesoup's star rises a little bit more every match.  The finish with neither guy having anything left to give was so old school and great.

Holy fuck, but Jonathan Gresham's heel turn is long overdue.  Good to see that Tully Blanchard has picked up the pieces and put together another impressive stable.  I was sorta hoping that Kaun would tag with Knull, but he and Koa make for a brutal mid-card tag-team.  I'm looking forward to Lee Moriarty getting his leg broken next Friday night when The Octopus bends Moriarty's knee in an unnatural manner.  I'm also looking forward to GoA wrestling the Briscoes or something in RoH in a #1 Contenders match for FTR's straps.

I figured that Deeb was studying up on Martinez this entire time and would eventually turn on her.  I am hoping that this match ends up on DBD in Maryland where I can maybe break north to see it.  Fyter Fest is already stacked to the gills.

Jade Cargill is going to successfully defend her title against Kris Statlander and Athena, eventually get betrayed by her crew, make a face turn, kick the Baddies' asses, and stay undefeated, isn't she?

God bless Tony Nese for lying down for Orange Cassidy and signing up for these comedy matches.  I hope he's being paid well.  Mark Sterling took a Falcon Punch to the groin.  I LOLed.

They gotta get these prospects away from Matt Sydal. Dude is one of the worst promos ever to make it onto national TV. Stop it, please! Man peaked when he broke through the door to find his girlfriend with Syxx in WSX. Syxx left Sydal laying lmao.

That. That is why.

One of my low key favorite things about AEW is when the Internet reacts incredulously to a signing and then within 6 months tops they’re having awesome matches on TV. It’s like clockwork at this point.

Or the presumption of doom if a once hot character has spent any time in cool down mode.  See: FTR, OC, and Wardlow.

Just c'mon, man! I was like with THIS as the opener, you give OC and Nese the main event slot? And the opener proceeds to be excellent and the main event still manages to be the MAIN EVENT!!! That's fantastic! And Sterling got cursed right in the nuts!

Every Tony Nese match has been good. He had a really good string of matches on DARK and makes everybody he's in there with better and is clearly the right choice for the HookHausen stuff.

Honestly any pairing with him brings the other guy down... and I like the guy

reminds me of when TNA signed Big Poppa Pump

anyway the show. Eddie is still the king of lardization! what a finishing sequence.

Davy Jones TURNS heel on Lee! So much meat on the bone in GOA? If we don't get them slapping meat in Bear Country on Dark we riot! Speaking of Tully and Arn. Where is Arn he doesn't seem to managing Hijo De Arn and Shotty Lee anymore? Maybe he can be the TBE tag team specialist?

Serena Deeb TURNS heel on Mercedes (look how happy Mercedes looks on he entrance. I'm legit thrilled for her I saw her wrestling small time indys pre pandemic then she gets to sign with the WWE get some paychecks and now shes getting featured on a national PRO WRESTLING  show, living the dream baby!) Wait she was all ready heel. TURNS MORE HEEL! YHEA THATS THE TICKET

Tony Neese is YOUR main eventer. Listen I get that a lot of people like his work but to me he's Mike Rotunda 2.0 a solid work rate midcarder but someone who I can't really get invested in him. Orange looked good though.

Overall a bit of a middling episode. Solid opener (Real main event to me) a couple matches that where more angles and the main featured some sun charcters the audience loves (Orange, Danhausen) or loves to hate (sterling). Like I said about Dynamite being a cool down episode. But that's a good thing We just had Blood and Guts and if you keep the volume up to 11 at all times everything just becomes noise. So its good to reset before the build to Fyterfest rally starts. Far to much attempted epicness all the time in modern wrestling

There's probably been enough turns for now, but maybe an eventual heel turn will help? I thought his 2018 Impact run was fantastic where he was doing really great character work in addition to the in ring.

I like to think that kid Eddie Kingston wrote about in the Player’s Tribute that used to backdrop suplex into screen projectors is living his best life right now.  Give him his dream matches.

I love watching what an artist creates when given the opportunity to express themselves the way they dream. Auteur Theory in wrestling. It’s what is fun in AEW. Darby Allin, Swerve, Orange Cassidy, and so many others all have this unique/ funky way they move and use their bodies to tell stories. Their fluid motion is in a way that I wouldn't point to as something I specifically would enjoy in an ideological “thisiswhatilike” sense, but so specific to their character’s psychology and aura that I have a great time watching them. This company could have an event with the parallel moment driven physical storytelling that I enjoy, a taunt fest, a southern style tag, gorgeous high spots I say “woah” at, blood on tv, comedy hijinks and each (most?) of these matches will be filled with characters that are so different from each other in both looks but also how they tell their tale.

Love all of this.

Not so much into the idea that "A and B and C are great pro wrestling and anything that deviates from such is bad and wrong" any more.

Very much into letting talented and unique individuals experiment spontaneously, creatively, freely, joyfully; even if it means going well on beyond Z in their pursuit of self-expression.

I really enjoyed the Eddie match, but some of the Classic Puroesu cosplay going on in that match took me out of it. It felt like a performance to me. OC vs Nese felt like a match with stakes.

It's even more jarring when a guy like Kingston goes down the "forced epic" route, when his biggest strength as a performer is staying in the scene and committing to realistic engagment with whatever ends up happening. The last guy I want to see painting by big flashy numbers. I found the finishing run particularly iffy, Takeshita no-sold when he coulda done the delayed-sell thing. It was a weird match for sure.
